The Glory of Someshvara-tirtha
Verse 1 (padma.6.145.1)
श्रीमहादेव उवाच। ततो गच्छेः महत्तीर्थे संगमेश्वरमुत्तमम् । यत्र हस्तिमती पुण्या साभ्रमत्या हि संगता
śrīmahādeva uvāca tato gaccheḥ mahattīrthe saṁgameśvaramuttamam yatra hastimatī puṇyā sābhramatyā hi saṁgatā
Shri Mahadeva said: 'After this one should go to the great and excellent ford called Sangameshvara, where the meritorious Hastimati joins with the Sabarmati.'
Verse 2 (padma.6.145.2)
शापं कौडिन्यमुनितः प्राप्य शुष्काभवन्नदी । बहिश्चर्येति नाम्ना वै लोके ख्यातिमुपागता
śāpaṁ kauḍinyamunitaḥ prāpya śuṣkābhavannadī bahiścaryeti nāmnā vai loke khyātimupāgatā
'Having received a curse from the sage Kaundinya, that river became dry; and thenceforth she became known throughout the world by the name Bahishcharya.'
Verse 3 (padma.6.145.3)
तत्तीर्थं संप्रवक्ष्यामि पुण्यं त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम् । सर्वपापहरं पुण्यं त्रैलोक्ये चापि विश्रुतम्
tattīrthaṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi puṇyaṁ trailokyaviśrutam sarvapāpaharaṁ puṇyaṁ trailokye cāpi viśrutam
'I shall now describe that ford, meritorious and renowned throughout the three worlds — a remover of every sin, meritorious, and famed throughout the three worlds.'
Verse 4 (padma.6.145.4)
यत्र तीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा दृष्ट्वा देवं महेश्वरम् । मुच्यते सर्वपापेभ्यो रुद्रलोकं प्रगच्छति
yatra tīrthe naraḥ snātvā dṛṣṭvā devaṁ maheśvaram mucyate sarvapāpebhyo rudralokaṁ pragacchati
'Bathing at that ford, and beholding the great god Maheshvara, a man is freed from every sin and goes to the world of Rudra.'
Verse 5 (padma.6.145.5)
शृणु देवि प्रवक्ष्यामि एतच्छापस्य कारणम् । यथैह शुष्करूपा हि जाता शापस्य कारणात्
śṛṇu devi pravakṣyāmi etacchāpasya kāraṇam yathaiha śuṣkarūpā hi jātā śāpasya kāraṇāt
'Listen, O goddess, I shall now tell the reason for this curse — how this river came to take on a dry, withered form, because of that very curse.'
Verse 6 (padma.6.145.6)
यत्र साभ्रमती पुण्या गंगा नाम महानदी । तत्र हस्तिमती नाम गंगया सह संगता
yatra sābhramatī puṇyā gaṁgā nāma mahānadī tatra hastimatī nāma gaṁgayā saha saṁgatā
'Where the meritorious great river named Ganga, that is the Sabarmati, flows, there the river named Hastimati used to join with that Ganga.'
Verse 7 (padma.6.145.7)
तत्रारब्धं च मुनिना तपो वै परमं महत् । एवं बहुगते काले ऋषिणा परमात्मना
tatrārabdhaṁ ca muninā tapo vai paramaṁ mahat evaṁ bahugate kāle ṛṣiṇā paramātmanā
'There a certain sage began a supremely great austerity. Thus, as much time passed, that sage, knower of the Supreme Self —'
Verse 8 (padma.6.145.8)
आराधितो हृषीकेशो नारायणनिरंजनः । तस्यास्तटे तु देवेशि वर्षाणि च बहून्यपि
ārādhito hṛṣīkeśo nārāyaṇaniraṁjanaḥ tasyāstaṭe tu deveśi varṣāṇi ca bahūnyapi
'worshipped Hrishikesha, the stainless Narayana. O queen of gods, upon her bank, many years too —'
Verse 9 (padma.6.145.9)
गतानि च विशेषेण मुनेस्तस्य तु पार्वति । कदाचिद्दैवयोगाच्च वर्षाकालः समागतः
gatāni ca viśeṣeṇa munestasya tu pārvati kadāciddaivayogācca varṣākālaḥ samāgataḥ
'O Parvati, passed by, in particular, for that sage. Once, by some working of fate, the rainy season arrived.'
Verse 10 (padma.6.145.10)
नदी तत्र तु संपूर्णा कालयोगेन सुव्रते । तत्कौंडिन्येन ऋषिणा स्थानं त्यक्तं तदा निशि
nadī tatra tu saṁpūrṇā kālayogena suvrate tatkauṁḍinyena ṛṣiṇā sthānaṁ tyaktaṁ tadā niśi
'O keeper of good vows, by the working of the season, the river there became full of water. Then the sage Kaundinya, in the night, abandoned that place.'
Verse 11 (padma.6.145.11)
रात्रौ दुःखं महज्जातं हाहेति करुणो रुदन् । किं कर्तव्यमिति ध्यायन्नतिचिंतापरोऽभवत्
rātrau duḥkhaṁ mahajjātaṁ hāheti karuṇo rudan kiṁ kartavyamiti dhyāyannaticiṁtāparo'bhavat
'In the night great sorrow came upon him; crying alas, alas he wept most piteously. Thinking what am I to do now, he became exceedingly troubled.'
Verse 12 (padma.6.145.12)
आश्रमो हि महादिव्यो ऋषिणैव समायुतः । स गतो वारियोगेन हस्तिमत्यां सुरोत्तमे
āśramo hi mahādivyo ṛṣiṇaiva samāyutaḥ sa gato vāriyogena hastimatyāṁ surottame
'That most divine hermitage, joined together by that very sage, was swept away in the flow of water, O foremost of gods, into the Hastimati.'
Verse 13 (padma.6.145.13)
फलानि चैव मूलानि पुस्तकानि बहून्यपि । तानि तस्यां गतान्येव वारियोगेन सुंदरि
phalāni caiva mūlāni pustakāni bahūnyapi tāni tasyāṁ gatānyeva vāriyogena suṁdari
'O lovely one, his fruits, roots, and many books besides — all these too, carried by the flow of water, went into that very river.'
Verse 14 (padma.6.145.14)
स कौंडिन्यो ऋषिश्रेष्ठः शशाप तां नदीं किल । उदकेन विना त्वं च भविष्यसि कलौ युगे
sa kauṁḍinyo ṛṣiśreṣṭhaḥ śaśāpa tāṁ nadīṁ kila udakena vinā tvaṁ ca bhaviṣyasi kalau yuge
'That foremost of sages, Kaundinya, then cursed that river indeed: You shall become without water in the Kali age.'
Verse 15 (padma.6.145.15)
एवं स दत्त्वा वै शापं हस्तिमत्या महेश्वरि । गतोऽसौ विप्रप्रवरो विष्णुलोकं सनातनम्
evaṁ sa dattvā vai śāpaṁ hastimatyā maheśvari gato'sau viprapravaro viṣṇulokaṁ sanātanam
'O great goddess, having thus pronounced this curse upon the Hastimati, that excellent brahmin departed for the eternal abode of Vishnu.'
Verse 16 (padma.6.145.16)
अद्यापि वर्तते तीर्थं संगमेश्वरसंज्ञकम् । यं दृष्ट्वा मुच्यते पापी ब्रह्महत्यादि पातकात्
adyāpi vartate tīrthaṁ saṁgameśvarasaṁjñakam yaṁ dṛṣṭvā mucyate pāpī brahmahatyādi pātakāt
'Even today that ford called Sangameshvara exists, seeing which even a sinner is freed from the sin of killing a brahmin and the like.'
