Chapter 163All chaptersChapter 165

Verse 1 (padma.6.164.1)

mahādeva uvāca atra tīrthaṃ mahaccānyatkaśyapākhyaṃ sureśvari yatra hrado mahānāsīnnagadeva vinirmitaḥ

Mahadeva said: Here is another great tirtha, O queen of the gods, called Kashyapa, where there was a great lake, made by the very mountain-god.

Verse 2 (padma.6.164.2)

tatra kuśeśvaro nāma devo yatra virājate yatra kuṃḍaṃ tathā ramyaṃ kaśyapena vinirmitam

There a god named Kusheshvara reigns; and there is a delightful pool as well, made by Kashyapa himself.

Verse 3 (padma.6.164.3)

tatra snātvā tu bho devi na naro nirayaṃ vrajet agnihotrakarā viprā nityaṃ vedaparāyaṇāḥ

Bathing there, O goddess, a man does not go to hell. Brahmins who perform the fire-sacrifice, ever devoted to the Veda,

Verse 4 (padma.6.164.4)

nivasaṃti mahadevi kāśyapāyāṃ bahuśrutāḥ yathā kāśī tathā ceyaṃ nagarī ṛṣinirmitā

of great learning, dwell, O great goddess, at Kashyapi; as is Kashi, so is this city, made by the sage.

Verse 5 (padma.6.164.5)

kāśyapena yataścātra taptaṃ bahutaraṃ tapaḥ gaṃgā vai tapasā yena ānīteśajaṭodbhavā

Because Kashyapa performed here very great austerity, by which the Ganga, born from the matted locks of the Lord, was brought down,

Verse 6 (padma.6.164.6)

sā gaṃgā kāśyapī devi mahāpātakanāśinī yasyā darśanamātreṇa mucyaṃte duṣṭakilbiṣāt

that Ganga is called Kashyapi, O goddess, destroyer of great sins; by the mere sight of her, one is freed of wicked sin.

Verse 7 (padma.6.164.7)

godānaṃ ca praśaṃsaṃti rathadānaṃ tathaiva ca śrāddhaṃ kṛtvā tu tatraiva dānaṃ deyaṃ prayatnataḥ

The gift of a cow is praised here, and likewise the gift of a chariot; having performed shraddha here, gifts should be diligently given.

Verse 8 (padma.6.164.8)

kalau yuge tathā ghore mahāpātakanāśanam kaśyapākhyaṃ samaṃ tīrthaṃ na bhūtaṃ na bhaviṣyati

In this terrible Kali age, no tirtha equal to this one called Kashyapa, the destroyer of great sins, has ever existed, nor shall exist.

Verse 9 (padma.6.164.9)

yatra vai devatāḥ sarvā ṛṣayo vītakalmaṣāḥ nityaṃ tiṣṭhaṃti deveśi tīrtharājaprasādataḥ

There all the gods and the sages, free of taint, ever abide, O queen of the gods, through the grace of the King of Tirthas.
