Chapter 164All chaptersChapter 166

Verse 1 (padma.6.165.1)

mahādeva uvāca bhūtālayaṃ tato gacchettīrthaṃ pāpaharaṃ padam bhūtālayo vaṭo yatra yatra prācī tu caṃdanā

Mahadeva said: One should then go to Bhutalaya, a tirtha and place that removes sin, where the Bhutalaya banyan tree stands, and where the Chandana river flows eastward.

Verse 2 (padma.6.165.2)

bhūtālaye naraḥ snātvā kṛṣṇāṣṭamyāmupoṣitaḥ yastu kṛṣṇatilāndadyānna sa preto'bhijāyate

A man who bathes at Bhutalaya, fasting on the dark eighth lunar day, and who gives black sesame seeds, is not born as a ghost.

Verse 3 (padma.6.165.3)

pitṝnuddiśya yo dadyādudakuṃbhaṃ tilaiḥ saha pūrvajānpretabhāvātsa mocayennātra saṃśayaḥ

Whoever offers a pot of water together with sesame, dedicated to the ancestors, releases his forefathers from the state of ghosthood -- there is no doubt of this.

Verse 4 (padma.6.165.4)

yasya nāmnā naraḥ snāti pretatvātsa vimucyate caturdaśyāmathāṣṭamyāṃ prabhāte vimalodake

Whoever bathes in the name of an ancestor, that ancestor is freed from the state of a ghost -- on the fourteenth or the eighth day, at dawn, in the pure water,

Verse 5 (padma.6.165.5)

tīrthe bhūtālaye snātvā dṛṣṭvā bhūtālayaṃ vaṭam bhūteśvaraprasādena bhūtebhyo na labhedbhayam

at the tirtha of Bhutalaya. Having bathed and beheld the Bhutalaya banyan tree, through the grace of Bhuteshvara one no longer has fear from spirits.

Verse 6 (padma.6.165.6)

iti śrībhūteśvaratīrtham atastīrthātparaṃ tīrthaṃ ghaṭeśvaramiti smṛtam yatra snātvā tu taṃ dṛṣṭvā muktibhāgī bhaveddhruvam

Thus the tirtha of Shri Bhuteshvara. Beyond this tirtha is another, called Ghateshvara; bathing there and beholding him, one certainly becomes a partaker of liberation.

Verse 7 (padma.6.165.7)

yatra sābhramatī tīrthaṃ ghaṭo vai paramo mahān dṛṣṭvā caiva mahādevaṃ mucyate nātra saṃśayaḥ

There the Sabarmati forms a tirtha, and there is a supremely great water-pot. Having beheld the great god there, one is released -- there is no doubt of this.

Verse 8 (padma.6.165.8)

tatra gatvā viśeṣeṇa plakṣapūjāṃ karoti yaḥ manasābhīpsitānkāmā~llabhate mānavo bhuvi

Whoever goes there and especially performs worship of the plaksha, the sacred fig tree, obtains upon this earth whatever desires are cherished in his mind.

Verse 9 (padma.6.165.9)

iti ghaṭeśvaratīrtham tato gacchennaro bhaktyā vaidyanātheti viśrutam tatra snātvā narastīrthe śivapūjanatatparaḥ

Thus the tirtha of Ghateshvara. Thereafter a man should go with devotion to the tirtha renowned as Vaidyanatha; bathing there, and intent upon the worship of Shiva,

Verse 10 (padma.6.165.10)

pitṝnsaṃtarpya vidhinā sarvayajñaphalaṃ labhet vijayo devasaṃbhūtaḥ sarvapāpakṣayaṃkaraḥ yaṃ dṛṣṭvā vividhānkāmānprāpnuyuste narāḥ sadā

and having duly offered libations to the ancestors, he obtains the fruit of every sacrifice. Vijaya, born of the gods, is the destroyer of all sin; beholding him, men ever obtain their manifold desires.
