Vishnu Enters the Battle

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.154.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । पुनर्दैत्यं समायान्तं दृष्ट्वा देवाः सवासवाः । भयात्प्रकम्पिताः सर्वे सहैवादुद्रुवुर्द्रुतम्

sanatkumāra uvāca punardaityaṁ samāyāntaṁ dṛṣṭvā devāḥ savāsavāḥ bhayātprakampitāḥ sarve sahaivādudruvurdrutam

Sanatkumara said: "Seeing the daitya approach once again, the gods, together with Vasava, all trembling with fear, fled swiftly, together as one."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.154.2)

वैकुण्ठं प्रययुः सर्वे पुरस्कृत्य प्रजापतिम् । तुष्टुवुस्ते सुरा नत्वा सप्रजापतयोऽखिलाः

vaikuṇṭhaṁ prayayuḥ sarve puraskṛtya prajāpatim tuṣṭuvuste surā natvā saprajāpatayo'khilāḥ

All of them, placing Prajapati [Brahma] at their head, went to Vaikuntha; there, all the gods, together with Prajapati, bowed and offered praise.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.154.3)

देवा ऊचुः । हृषीकेश महाबाहो भगवन् मधुसूदन । नमस्ते देवदेवेश सर्वदैत्यविनाशक

devā ūcuḥ hṛṣīkeśa mahābāho bhagavan madhusūdana namaste devadeveśa sarvadaityavināśaka

The gods said: "O Hrishikesha, mighty-armed one, blessed Madhusudana! Salutation to you, Lord over the God of gods, destroyer of every daitya."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.154.4)

मत्स्यरूपाय ते विष्णो वेदान्नीतवते नमः । सत्यव्रतेन सद्राज्ञा प्रलयाब्धिविहारिणे

matsyarūpāya te viṣṇo vedānnītavate namaḥ satyavratena sadrājñā pralayābdhivihāriṇe

"Salutation to you, O Vishnu, in your form as a fish, who brought back the Vedas — who sported in the ocean of dissolution together with the righteous King Satyavrata."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.154.5)

कुर्वाणानां सुराणां च मथनायोद्यमं भृशम् । बिभ्रते मन्दरगिरिं कूर्मरूपाय ते नमः

kurvāṇānāṁ surāṇāṁ ca mathanāyodyamaṁ bhṛśam bibhrate mandaragiriṁ kūrmarūpāya te namaḥ

"Salutation to you, in your tortoise form, bearing up Mount Mandara for the gods who labored so greatly at the churning."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.154.6)

नमस्ते भगवन्नाथ क्रतवे सूकरात्मने । वसुन्धरां जनाधारां मूर्द्धतो बिभ्रते नमः

namaste bhagavannātha kratave sūkarātmane vasundharāṁ janādhārāṁ mūrddhato bibhrate namaḥ

"Salutation to you, O Lord, embodiment of sacrifice, in the form of the boar; salutation to you, who bore the earth — the very foundation of all beings — upon your tusk."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.154.7)

वामनाय नमस्तुभ्यमुप्रेन्द्राख्याय विष्णवे । विप्ररूपेण दैत्येन्द्रं बलिं छलयते विभो

vāmanāya namastubhyamuprendrākhyāya viṣṇave viprarūpeṇa daityendraṁ baliṁ chalayate vibho

"Salutation to you, Vamana, called Upendra, O Vishnu; O mighty one, who, taking the form of a Brahmin, beguiled the lord of daityas, Bali."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.154.8)

नमः परशुरामाय क्षत्रनिः क्षत्रकारिणे । मातुर्हितकृते तुभ्यं कुपितायासतां द्रुहे

namaḥ paraśurāmāya kṣatraniḥ kṣatrakāriṇe māturhitakṛte tubhyaṁ kupitāyāsatāṁ druhe

"Salutation to Parashurama, who cleansed the earth of Kshatriyas; to you who, enraged for your mother's sake, became the scourge of the wicked."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.154.9)

रामाय लोकरामाय मर्यादापुरुषाय ते । रावणान्तकरायाशु सीतायाः पतये नमः

rāmāya lokarāmāya maryādāpuruṣāya te rāvaṇāntakarāyāśu sītāyāḥ pataye namaḥ

"Salutation to Rama, delight of the world, the man of perfect conduct, swift destroyer of Ravana, husband of Sita."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.154.10)

नमस्ते ज्ञानगूढाय कृष्णाय परमात्मने । राधाविहारशीलाय नानालीलाकराय च

namaste jñānagūḍhāya kṛṣṇāya paramātmane rādhāvihāraśīlāya nānālīlākarāya ca

"Salutation to you, Krishna, in whom knowledge lies hidden, the Supreme Self, whose nature delights in play with Radha, doer of manifold sports."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.154.11)

नमस्ते गूढदेहाय वेदनिन्दाकराय च । योगाचार्याय जैनाय बौद्धरूपाय मापते

namaste gūḍhadehāya vedanindākarāya ca yogācāryāya jaināya bauddharūpāya māpate

"Salutation to you, who took on a hidden form and thereby brought about censure of the Vedas; O Lord of Lakshmi, teacher of yoga, in the guise of the Jina and the Buddha."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.154.12)

नमस्ते कल्किरूपाय म्लेच्छानामन्तकारिणे । अनन्तशक्तिरूपाय सद्धर्मस्थापनाय च

namaste kalkirūpāya mlecchānāmantakāriṇe anantaśaktirūpāya saddharmasthāpanāya ca

"Salutation to you in your form as Kalki, ender of the barbarian hordes, of infinite power, establisher of true dharma."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.154.13)

नमः कपिलरूपाय देवहूत्यै महात्मने । वदते साङ्ख्ययोगं च साङ्ख्याचार्याय वै प्रभो

namaḥ kapilarūpāya devahūtyai mahātmane vadate sāṅkhyayogaṁ ca sāṅkhyācāryāya vai prabho

"Salutation to you in the form of Kapila, the great soul who taught Sankhya-yoga to Devahuti, O Lord, the very teacher of Sankhya."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.154.14)

नमः परमहंसाय ज्ञानं संवदते परम् । विधात्रे ज्ञानरूपाय येनात्मा सम्प्रसीदति

namaḥ paramahaṁsāya jñānaṁ saṁvadate param vidhātre jñānarūpāya yenātmā samprasīdati

"Salutation to the Paramahamsa, who imparts supreme knowledge, the ordainer, the very form of knowledge, by whom the soul comes to true serenity."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.154.15)

वेदव्यासाय वेदानां विभागं कुर्वते नमः । हिताय सर्वलोकानां पुराणरचनाय च

vedavyāsāya vedānāṁ vibhāgaṁ kurvate namaḥ hitāya sarvalokānāṁ purāṇaracanāya ca

"Salutation to Vedavyasa, who divided the Vedas for the welfare of all the worlds, and who composed the Puranas."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.154.16)

एवं मत्स्यादितनुभिर्भक्तकार्योद्यताय ते । सर्गस्थितिध्वंसकर्त्रे नमस्ते ब्रह्मणे प्रभो

evaṁ matsyāditanubhirbhaktakāryodyatāya te sargasthitidhvaṁsakartre namaste brahmaṇe prabho

"Thus, in forms from the fish onward, ever intent upon your devotees' tasks — salutation to you, O Lord, O Brahman, doer of creation, preservation, and dissolution."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.154.17)

आर्तिहन्त्रे स्वदासानां सुखदाय शुभाय च । पीताम्बराय हरये तार्क्ष्ययानाय ते नमः । सर्वक्रियायैककर्त्रे शरण्याय नमो नमः

ārtihantre svadāsānāṁ sukhadāya śubhāya ca pītāmbarāya haraye tārkṣyayānāya te namaḥ sarvakriyāyaikakartre śaraṇyāya namo namaḥ

"To the remover of your own servants' suffering, the giver of happiness, the auspicious one; salutation to you, Hari, clad in yellow, whose mount is Tarkshya [Garuda]; salutation, salutation to the sole doer of every deed, the refuge of all."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.154.18)

दैत्यसन्तापितामर्त्यदुःखादिध्वंसवज्रक । शेषतल्पशयायार्कचन्द्रनेत्राय ते नमः

daityasantāpitāmartyaduḥkhādidhvaṁsavajraka śeṣatalpaśayāyārkacandranetrāya te namaḥ

"O thunderbolt that shatters the sorrow and affliction of the immortals tormented by the daityas; salutation to you, who rest upon Shesha's couch, whose eyes are the sun and moon."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.154.19)

कृपासिन्धो रमानाथ पाहि नः शरणागतान् । जलन्धरेण देवाश्च स्वर्गात्सर्वे निराकृताः

kṛpāsindho ramānātha pāhi naḥ śaraṇāgatān jalandhareṇa devāśca svargātsarve nirākṛtāḥ

"O ocean of compassion, Lord of Lakshmi, protect us who have come to you for refuge. All the gods have been driven out of heaven by Jalandhara."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.154.20)

सूर्यो निस्सारितः स्थानाच्चन्द्रो वह्निस्तथैव च । पातालान्नागराजश्च धर्मराजो निराकृतः

sūryo nissāritaḥ sthānāccandro vahnistathaiva ca pātālānnāgarājaśca dharmarājo nirākṛtaḥ

"The sun has been driven from his own place, and the moon, and fire likewise; the king of serpents has been driven from Patala, and the King of Dharma [Yama] too."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.154.21)

विचरन्ति यथा मर्त्याः शोभन्ते नैव ते सुराः । शरणं ते वयं प्राप्ता वधस्तस्य विचिन्त्यताम्

vicaranti yathā martyāḥ śobhante naiva te surāḥ śaraṇaṁ te vayaṁ prāptā vadhastasya vicintyatām

"These gods now wander about like mere mortals; they no longer shine with any glory. We have come to you for refuge; consider now how he may be slain."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.154.22)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इति दीनवचः श्रुत्वा देवानां मधुसूदनः । जगाद करुणासिन्धुर्मेघनिर्ह्रादया गिरा

sanatkumāra uvāca iti dīnavacaḥ śrutvā devānāṁ madhusūdanaḥ jagāda karuṇāsindhurmeghanirhrādayā girā

Sanatkumara said: "Hearing this piteous plea of the gods, Madhusudana, ocean of compassion, spoke in a voice as deep as thunderclouds."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.154.23)

विष्णुरुवाच । भयं त्यजत हे देवा गमिष्याम्यहमाहवम् । जलन्धरेण दैत्येन करिष्यामि पराक्रमम्

viṣṇuruvāca bhayaṁ tyajata he devā gamiṣyāmyahamāhavam jalandhareṇa daityena kariṣyāmi parākramam

Vishnu said: "Cast off your fear, O gods; I shall go to the battle. I shall show my valor against the daitya Jalandhara."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.154.24)

इत्युक्त्वा सहसोत्थाय दैत्यारिः खिन्नमानसः । आरोहद्गरुडं वेगात्कृपया भक्तवत्सलः

ityuktvā sahasotthāya daityāriḥ khinnamānasaḥ ārohadgaruḍaṁ vegātkṛpayā bhaktavatsalaḥ

Having said this, the enemy of the daityas, his mind troubled, rose up at once and, out of compassion, ever affectionate to his devotees, mounted Garuda in haste.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.154.25)

गच्छन्तं वल्लभं दृष्ट्वा देवैस्सार्द्धं समुद्रजा । साञ्जलिर्बाष्पनयना लक्ष्मीर्वचनमब्रवीत्

gacchantaṁ vallabhaṁ dṛṣṭvā devaissārddhaṁ samudrajā sāñjalirbāṣpanayanā lakṣmīrvacanamabravīt

Seeing her beloved going forth with the gods, Lakshmi, born of the ocean, hands folded, her eyes brimming with tears, spoke these words.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.154.26)

लक्ष्म्युवाच । अहं ते वल्लभा नाथ भक्ता यदि च सर्वदा । तत्कथं ते मम भ्राता युद्धे वध्यः कृपानिधे

lakṣmyuvāca ahaṁ te vallabhā nātha bhaktā yadi ca sarvadā tatkathaṁ te mama bhrātā yuddhe vadhyaḥ kṛpānidhe

Lakshmi said: "O Lord, if I am truly your beloved, ever devoted to you, then how, O ocean of mercy, could my own brother be slain by you in battle?"

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.154.27)

विष्णुरुवाच । जलन्धरेण दैत्येन करिष्यामि पराक्रमम् । तैः संस्तुतो गमिष्यामि युद्धाय त्वरितान्वितः

viṣṇuruvāca jalandhareṇa daityena kariṣyāmi parākramam taiḥ saṁstuto gamiṣyāmi yuddhāya tvaritānvitaḥ

Vishnu said: "I shall indeed show my valor against the daitya Jalandhara. Praised as I have been by the gods, I go swiftly now to the battle."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.154.28)

रुद्रांशसम्भवत्वाच्च ब्रह्मणो वचनादपि । प्रीत्या च तव नैवायं मम वध्यो जलन्धरः

rudrāṁśasambhavatvācca brahmaṇo vacanādapi prītyā ca tava naivāyaṁ mama vadhyo jalandharaḥ

"But because he sprang from a portion of Rudra, and by Brahma's own word as well, and out of my love for you — this Jalandhara is, in truth, not mine to slay."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.154.29)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा गरुडारूढः शङ्खचक्रगदासिभृत् । विष्णुर्वेगाद्ययौ योद्धुं देवैः शक्रादिभिस्सह

sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā garuḍārūḍhaḥ śaṅkhacakragadāsibhṛt viṣṇurvegādyayau yoddhuṁ devaiḥ śakrādibhissaha

Sanatkumara said: "Having spoken thus, Vishnu, mounted on Garuda, bearing conch, discus, mace, and sword, went swiftly to battle, together with Shakra and the other gods."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.154.30)

द्रुतं स प्राप तत्रैव यत्र दैत्यो जलन्धरः । कुर्वन् सिंहरवं देवैर्ज्वलद्भिर्विष्णुतेजसा

drutaṁ sa prāpa tatraiva yatra daityo jalandharaḥ kurvan siṁharavaṁ devairjvaladbhirviṣṇutejasā

He swiftly reached the very place where the daitya Jalandhara was, raising a lion's roar, together with the gods, all ablaze with Vishnu's own splendor.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.154.31)

अथारुणानुजजवपक्षवातप्रपीडिताः । वात्याविवर्तिता दैत्या बभ्रमुः खे यथा घनाः

athāruṇānujajavapakṣavātaprapīḍitāḥ vātyāvivartitā daityā babhramuḥ khe yathā ghanāḥ

Then, buffeted by the wind from the wings of Aruna's younger brother [Garuda], the daityas were whirled about like clouds tossed by a storm, tumbling through the sky.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.154.32)

ततो जलन्धरो दृष्ट्वा दैत्यान् वात्याप्रपीडितान् । उद्धृत्य वचनं क्रोधाद् द्रुतं विष्णुं समभ्यगात्

tato jalandharo dṛṣṭvā daityān vātyāprapīḍitān uddhṛtya vacanaṁ krodhād drutaṁ viṣṇuṁ samabhyagāt

Then Jalandhara, seeing his daityas buffeted by that whirlwind, cried out a word in anger and swiftly advanced upon Vishnu.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.154.33)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे देवाश्चक्रुर्युद्धं प्रहर्षिताः । तेजसा च हरेः पुष्टा महाबलसमन्विताः

etasminnantare devāścakruryuddhaṁ praharṣitāḥ tejasā ca hareḥ puṣṭā mahābalasamanvitāḥ

Meanwhile, the gods, greatly rejoicing, nourished by Hari's own splendor and filled now with great strength, joined the battle.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.154.34)

युद्धोद्यतं समालोक्य देवसैन्यमुपस्थितम् । दैत्यानाज्ञापयामास समरे चातिदुर्मदान्

yuddhodyataṁ samālokya devasainyamupasthitam daityānājñāpayāmāsa samare cātidurmadān

Seeing the army of gods present and ready for battle, he [Jalandhara] gave his command to his daityas, fierce and unrestrained in war.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.154.35)

जलन्धर उवाच । भो भो दैत्यवरा यूयं युद्धं कुरुत दुस्तरम् । शक्राद्यैरमरैरद्य प्रबलैः कातरैः सदा

jalandhara uvāca bho bho daityavarā yūyaṁ yuddhaṁ kuruta dustaram śakrādyairamarairadya prabalaiḥ kātaraiḥ sadā

Jalandhara said: "O foremost of daityas, wage now an unstoppable war against Shakra and the other immortals — mighty as they were once, they are ever cowardly today."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.154.36)

मौर्यास्तु लक्षसङ्ख्याता धौम्रा हि शतसङ्ख्यकाः । असुराः कोटिसङ्ख्याताः कालकेयास्तथैव च

mauryāstu lakṣasaṅkhyātā dhaumrā hi śatasaṅkhyakāḥ asurāḥ koṭisaṅkhyātāḥ kālakeyāstathaiva ca

"Let the Mauryas, a hundred thousand strong, the Dhaumras in their hundreds, the asuras in their millions, and the Kalakeyas likewise —"

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.154.37)

कालकानां दौर्हृदानां कङ्कानां लक्षसङ्ख्यया । अन्येऽपि स्वबलैर्युक्ता विनिर्यान्तु ममाज्ञया

kālakānāṁ daurhṛdānāṁ kaṅkānāṁ lakṣasaṅkhyayā anye'pi svabalairyuktā viniryāntu mamājñayā

"— the Kalakas, the Daurhridas, the Kankas, a hundred thousand strong, and the others too, together with their own hosts, march forth at my command."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.154.38)

सर्वे सज्जा विनिर्यात बहुसेनाभिसंयुताः । नानाशस्त्रास्त्रसंयुक्ता निर्भया गतसंशयाः

sarve sajjā viniryāta bahusenābhisaṁyutāḥ nānāśastrāstrasaṁyuktā nirbhayā gatasaṁśayāḥ

"Let all of you, made ready, march forth with your vast armies, armed with manifold weapons, fearless and free of all doubt."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.154.39)

भो भो शुम्भनिशुम्भौ च देवान्समरकातरान् । क्षणेन सुमहावीर्यौ तुच्छान्नाशयतं युवाम्

bho bho śumbhaniśumbhau ca devānsamarakātarān kṣaṇena sumahāvīryau tucchānnāśayataṁ yuvām

"O Shumbha and Nishumbha, you two of the greatest might, destroy in an instant these gods, cowardly in battle, these worthless ones."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.154.40)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । दैत्या जलन्धराज्ञप्ता इत्थं युद्धविशारदाः । युयुधुस्तेऽसुराः सर्वे चतुरङ्गबलान्विताः

sanatkumāra uvāca daityā jalandharājñaptā itthaṁ yuddhaviśāradāḥ yuyudhuste'surāḥ sarve caturaṅgabalānvitāḥ

Sanatkumara said: "The daityas, thus commanded by Jalandhara, skilled in warfare, all those asuras, with their fourfold army, joined the battle."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.154.41)

गदाभिस्तीक्ष्णबाणैश्च शूलपट्टिशतोमरैः । केचित्परशुशूलैश्च निजघ्नुस्ते परस्परम्

gadābhistīkṣṇabāṇaiśca śūlapaṭṭiśatomaraiḥ kecitparaśuśūlaiśca nijaghnuste parasparam

With maces, sharp arrows, tridents, battle-axes, and spears — some with axes and pikes — they struck one another down.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.154.42)

नानायुधैः परैस्तत्र निजघ्नुस्ते बलान्विताः । देवास्तथा महावीरा हृषीकेशबलान्विताः । युयुधुस्तीक्ष्णबाणाश्च क्षिपन्तः सिंहवद्रवाः

nānāyudhaiḥ paraistatra nijaghnuste balānvitāḥ devāstathā mahāvīrā hṛṣīkeśabalānvitāḥ yuyudhustīkṣṇabāṇāśca kṣipantaḥ siṁhavadravāḥ

There, those mighty asuras struck down their foes with other manifold weapons besides; and the gods likewise — great heroes, strengthened now by Hrishikesha's own power — fought on, loosing their sharp arrows and roaring like lions.

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.154.43)

केचिद्बाणैः सुतीक्ष्णैश्च केचिन्मुसलतोमरैः । केचित्परशुशूलैश्च निजघ्नुस्ते परस्परम्

kecidbāṇaiḥ sutīkṣṇaiśca kecinmusalatomaraiḥ kecitparaśuśūlaiśca nijaghnuste parasparam

Some with the sharpest arrows, some with clubs and spears, some with axes and tridents — they struck one another down.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.154.44)

इत्थं सुराणां दैत्यानां सङ्ग्रामः समभून्महान् । अत्युल्बणो मुनीनां हि सिद्धानां भयकारकः

itthaṁ surāṇāṁ daityānāṁ saṅgrāmaḥ samabhūnmahān atyulbaṇo munīnāṁ hi siddhānāṁ bhayakārakaḥ

Thus a great battle broke out between the gods and the daityas — one exceedingly fierce, striking fear even into the hearts of sages and siddhas.
