The War Between Vishnu and Jalandhara

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.155.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । अथ दैत्या महावीर्याः शूलैः परशुपट्टिशैः । निजघ्नुःसर्वदेवांश्च भयव्याकुलमानसान्

sanatkumāra uvāca atha daityā mahāvīryāḥ śūlaiḥ paraśupaṭṭiśaiḥ nijaghnuḥsarvadevāṁśca bhayavyākulamānasān

Sanatkumara said: "Then the daityas of great might, with tridents, axes, and pattishas, struck down all the gods, whose minds were troubled with fear."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.155.2)

दैत्यायुधैः समाविद्धदेहा देवाः सवासवाः । रणाद्विदुद्रुवुः सर्वे भयव्याकुलमानसाः

daityāyudhaiḥ samāviddhadehā devāḥ savāsavāḥ raṇādvidudruvuḥ sarve bhayavyākulamānasāḥ

The gods, with Vasava among them, their bodies pierced by the daityas' weapons, all fled from the battlefield, their minds troubled with fear.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.155.3)

पलायनपरान् दृष्ट्वा हृषीकेशः सुरानथ । विष्णुर्वै गरुडारूढो योद्धुमभ्याययौ द्रुतम्

palāyanaparān dṛṣṭvā hṛṣīkeśaḥ surānatha viṣṇurvai garuḍārūḍho yoddhumabhyāyayau drutam

Seeing the gods intent on flight, Hrishikesha — Vishnu, mounted upon Garuda — swiftly came forth to fight.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.155.4)

सुदर्शनेन चक्रेण सर्वतः प्रस्फुरन् रुचा । सुशोभितकराब्जश्च रेजे भक्ताभयङ्करः

sudarśanena cakreṇa sarvataḥ prasphuran rucā suśobhitakarābjaśca reje bhaktābhayaṅkaraḥ

With the Sudarshana discus gleaming radiantly on every side, his lotus-like hand beautifully adorned, he who grants fearlessness to his devotees shone forth.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.155.5)

शङ्खखड्गगदाशार्ङ्गधारी क्रोधसमन्वितः । कठोरास्त्रो महावीरः सर्वयुद्धविशारदः

śaṅkhakhaḍgagadāśārṅgadhārī krodhasamanvitaḥ kaṭhorāstro mahāvīraḥ sarvayuddhaviśāradaḥ

Bearing conch, sword, mace, and the bow Sharnga, filled with wrath, wielding fearsome weapons, that great hero was skilled in every form of battle.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.155.6)

धनुषं शार्ङ्गनामानं विस्फूर्य्य विननाद ह । तस्य नादेन त्रैलोक्यं पूरितं महता मुने

dhanuṣaṁ śārṅganāmānaṁ visphūryya vinanāda ha tasya nādena trailokyaṁ pūritaṁ mahatā mune

Twanging the bow named Sharnga, he made it resound; O sage, by that great sound the three worlds were filled.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.155.7)

शार्ङ्गनिस्सृतबाणैश्च दितिजानां शिरांसि वै । चकर्त्त भगवान् विष्णुः कोटिशो रुट्समाकुलः

śārṅganissṛtabāṇaiśca ditijānāṁ śirāṁsi vai cakartta bhagavān viṣṇuḥ koṭiśo ruṭsamākulaḥ

With arrows loosed from Sharnga, Lord Vishnu, overcome with fury, severed the heads of the daityas by the millions.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.155.8)

अथारुणानुजजवपक्षवातप्रपीडिताः । वात्याविवर्त्तिता दैत्या बभ्रमुः खे यथा घनाः

athāruṇānujajavapakṣavātaprapīḍitāḥ vātyāvivarttitā daityā babhramuḥ khe yathā ghanāḥ

Then, buffeted by the speed of Garuda's wing-wind, the daityas, whirled about as by a storm, wandered through the sky like clouds.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.155.9)

ततो जलन्धरो दृष्ट्वा दैत्यान्वात्याप्रपीडितान् । चुक्रोधाति महादैत्यो देववृन्दभयङ्करः

tato jalandharo dṛṣṭvā daityānvātyāprapīḍitān cukrodhāti mahādaityo devavṛndabhayaṅkaraḥ

Then Jalandhara, that great daitya who terrified the hosts of gods, seeing his own daityas thus afflicted by the storm, grew exceedingly wrathful.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.155.10)

मर्द्दयन्तं च तं दृष्ट्वा दैत्यान् प्रस्फुरिताधरः । योद्धुमभ्याययौ वीरो वेगेन हरिणा सह

marddayantaṁ ca taṁ dṛṣṭvā daityān prasphuritādharaḥ yoddhumabhyāyayau vīro vegena hariṇā saha

Seeing him crushing the daityas, his lips quivering, that hero swiftly advanced to do battle with Hari.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.155.11)

स चकार महानादं देवासुरभयङ्करम् । दैत्यानामधिपः कर्णा विदीर्णाः श्रवणात्ततः

sa cakāra mahānādaṁ devāsurabhayaṅkaram daityānāmadhipaḥ karṇā vidīrṇāḥ śravaṇāttataḥ

He, the lord of the daityas, let out a mighty roar that struck fear into gods and asuras alike; from that very sound, ears were rent asunder.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.155.12)

भयंङ्करेण दैत्यस्य नादेनापूरितं तदा । जलन्धरस्य महता चकम्पे सकलं जगत्

bhayaṁṅkareṇa daityasya nādenāpūritaṁ tadā jalandharasya mahatā cakampe sakalaṁ jagat

Filled by that terrifying, mighty roar of the daitya Jalandhara, the entire universe trembled.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.155.13)

ततः समभवद्युद्धं विष्णुदैत्येन्द्रयोर्महत् । आकाशं कुर्वतोर्बाणैस्तदा निरवकाशवत्

tataḥ samabhavadyuddhaṁ viṣṇudaityendrayormahat ākāśaṁ kurvatorbāṇaistadā niravakāśavat

Then a great battle broke out between Vishnu and the lord of the daityas, the two of them filling the sky with arrows till it seemed to leave no space at all.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.155.14)

तयोश्च तेन युद्धेन परस्परमभून्मुने । देवासुरर्षिसिद्धानां भीकरेणातिविस्मयः

tayośca tena yuddhena parasparamabhūnmune devāsurarṣisiddhānāṁ bhīkareṇātivismayaḥ

O sage, by that mutual, terrifying battle between the two of them, gods, asuras, sages, and siddhas were struck with the greatest astonishment.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.155.15)

विष्णुर्दैत्यस्य बाणौघैर्ध्वजं छत्रं धनुः शरान् । चिच्छेद तं च हृदये बाणेनैकेन ताडयन्

viṣṇurdaityasya bāṇaughairdhvajaṁ chatraṁ dhanuḥ śarān ciccheda taṁ ca hṛdaye bāṇenaikena tāḍayan

Vishnu, with a flood of arrows, cut down the daitya's banner, parasol, bow, and arrows, and struck him in the heart with a single shaft.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.155.16)

ततो दैत्यः समुत्पत्य गदापाणिस्त्वरान्वितः । आहत्य गरुडं मूर्ध्नि पातयामास भूतले

tato daityaḥ samutpatya gadāpāṇistvarānvitaḥ āhatya garuḍaṁ mūrdhni pātayāmāsa bhūtale

Then the daitya, leaping up swiftly, mace in hand, struck Garuda upon the head and felled him to the ground.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.155.17)

विष्णुं जघान शूलेन तीक्ष्णेन प्रस्फुरद्रुचा । हृदये क्रोधसंयुक्तो दैत्यः प्रस्फुरिताधरः

viṣṇuṁ jaghāna śūlena tīkṣṇena prasphuradrucā hṛdaye krodhasaṁyukto daityaḥ prasphuritādharaḥ

The daitya, filled with fury, his lips quivering, struck Vishnu in the heart with a sharp, gleaming trident.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.155.18)

विष्णुर्गदां च खड्गेन चिच्छेद प्रहसन्निव । तं विव्याध शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः शार्ङ्गं विस्फूर्य दैत्यहा

viṣṇurgadāṁ ca khaḍgena ciccheda prahasanniva taṁ vivyādha śaraistīkṣṇaiḥ śārṅgaṁ visphūrya daityahā

Vishnu, as if smiling, severed his mace with his sword, and twanging the Sharnga bow, that slayer of daityas pierced him with sharp arrows.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.155.19)

विष्णुर्जलन्धरं दैत्यं भयदेन शरेण ह । क्रोधाविष्टोऽतितीक्ष्णेन जघानाशु सुरारिहा

viṣṇurjalandharaṁ daityaṁ bhayadena śareṇa ha krodhāviṣṭo'titīkṣṇena jaghānāśu surārihā

Vishnu, slayer of the enemies of the gods, overcome with wrath, at once struck the daitya Jalandhara with a terrifying, exceedingly sharp arrow.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.155.20)

आगतं तस्य तं बाणं दृष्ट्वा दैत्यो महाबलः । छित्त्वा बाणेन विष्णुं च जघान हृदये द्रुतम्

āgataṁ tasya taṁ bāṇaṁ dṛṣṭvā daityo mahābalaḥ chittvā bāṇena viṣṇuṁ ca jaghāna hṛdaye drutam

Seeing that arrow coming toward him, the mighty daitya cut it down with his own arrow, and swiftly struck Vishnu in the heart.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.155.21)

केशवोऽपि महाबाहुं विक्षिप्तमसुरेण तम् । शरं तिलप्रमाणेन च्छित्त्वा वीरो ननाद ह

keśavo'pi mahābāhuṁ vikṣiptamasureṇa tam śaraṁ tilapramāṇena cchittvā vīro nanāda ha

Mighty-armed Keshava, cutting to pieces no bigger than sesame seeds the arrow the asura had loosed, that hero let out a roar.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.155.22)

पुनर्बाणं समाधत्त धनुषि क्रोधवेपितः । महाबलोऽथ बाणेन चिच्छेद स शिलीमुखम्

punarbāṇaṁ samādhatta dhanuṣi krodhavepitaḥ mahābalo'tha bāṇena ciccheda sa śilīmukham

Trembling with rage, he fitted another arrow to his bow; but that mighty daitya cut this shaft too with his own arrow.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.155.23)

वासुदेवः पुनर्बाणं नाशाय विबुधद्विषः । क्रोधेनाधत्त धनुषि सिंहवद्विननाद ह

vāsudevaḥ punarbāṇaṁ nāśāya vibudhadviṣaḥ krodhenādhatta dhanuṣi siṁhavadvinanāda ha

Vasudeva again, in wrath, fitted an arrow to his bow to destroy the enemy of the gods, and roared like a lion.

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.155.24)

जलन्धरोऽथ दैत्येन्द्रः कोपाच्छिन्नाधरो बली । शरेण स्वेन शार्ङ्गाख्यं धनुश्चिच्छेद वैष्णवम्

jalandharo'tha daityendraḥ kopācchinnādharo balī śareṇa svena śārṅgākhyaṁ dhanuściccheda vaiṣṇavam

Then Jalandhara, lord of the daityas, mighty, his lips quivering with anger, with his own arrow cut in two Vishnu's bow named Sharnga.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.155.25)

पुनर्बाणैः सुतीक्ष्णैश्च जघान मधुसूदनम् । उग्रवीर्यो महावीरो देवानां भयकारकः

punarbāṇaiḥ sutīkṣṇaiśca jaghāna madhusūdanam ugravīryo mahāvīro devānāṁ bhayakārakaḥ

That great hero of terrible might, who struck fear into the gods, again struck Madhusudana with exceedingly sharp arrows.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.155.26)

स च्छिन्नधन्वा भगवान् केशवो लोकरक्षकः । जलन्धरस्य नाशाय चिक्षेप स्वगदां पराम्

sa cchinnadhanvā bhagavān keśavo lokarakṣakaḥ jalandharasya nāśāya cikṣepa svagadāṁ parām

Lord Keshava, protector of the worlds, his bow now cut away, hurled his own great mace to destroy Jalandhara.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.155.27)

सा गदा हरिणा क्षिप्ता ज्वलज्ज्वलनसन्निभा । अमोघगतिका शीघ्रं तस्य देहे ललाग ह

sā gadā hariṇā kṣiptā jvalajjvalanasannibhā amoghagatikā śīghraṁ tasya dehe lalāga ha

That mace, hurled by Hari, blazing like fire and unfailing in its course, swiftly struck upon his body.

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.155.28)

तया हतो महादैत्यो न चचालापि किञ्चन । जलन्धरो मदोन्मत्तः पुष्पमालाहतो यथा

tayā hato mahādaityo na cacālāpi kiñcana jalandharo madonmattaḥ puṣpamālāhato yathā

Struck by it, the great daitya Jalandhara, intoxicated with pride, did not so much as flinch — as if struck only by a garland of flowers.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.155.29)

ततो जलन्धरः क्रोधी देवत्रासकरोऽक्षिपत् । त्रिशूलमनलाकारं हरये रणदुर्म्मदः

tato jalandharaḥ krodhī devatrāsakaro'kṣipat triśūlamanalākāraṁ haraye raṇadurmmadaḥ

Then Jalandhara, wrathful, terrifier of the gods, furious in battle, hurled at Hari a trident blazing like fire.

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.155.30)

अथ विष्णुस्तत्त्रिशूलं चिच्छेद तरसा द्रुतम् । नन्दकाख्येन खड्गेन स्मृत्वा शिवपदाम्बुजम्

atha viṣṇustattriśūlaṁ ciccheda tarasā drutam nandakākhyena khaḍgena smṛtvā śivapadāmbujam

Then Vishnu, calling to mind Shiva's lotus feet, swiftly cut that trident with his sword named Nandaka.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.155.31)

छिन्ने त्रिशूले दैत्येन्द्र उत्प्लुत्य सहसा द्रुतम् । आगत्य हृदये विष्णुं जघान दृढमुष्टिना

chinne triśūle daityendra utplutya sahasā drutam āgatya hṛdaye viṣṇuṁ jaghāna dṛḍhamuṣṭinā

The trident cut away, the lord of daityas leapt up suddenly, and coming close, struck Vishnu in the heart with a hard fist.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.155.32)

सोऽपि विष्णुर्महावीरोऽविगणय्य च तद्व्यथाम । जलन्धरं च हृदये जघान दृढमुष्टिना

so'pi viṣṇurmahāvīro'vigaṇayya ca tadvyathāma jalandharaṁ ca hṛdaye jaghāna dṛḍhamuṣṭinā

Vishnu too, that great hero, disregarding the pain, struck Jalandhara in the heart with a hard fist in return.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.155.33)

ततस्तौ बाहुयुद्धेन युयुधाते महाबलौ । बाहुभिर्मुष्टिभिश्चैव जानुभिर्नादयन्महीम्

tatastau bāhuyuddhena yuyudhāte mahābalau bāhubhirmuṣṭibhiścaiva jānubhirnādayanmahīm

Then the two mighty ones fought a hand-to-hand battle, making the earth resound with their arms, their fists, and their knees.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.155.34)

एवं हि सुचिरं युद्धं कृत्वा तेनासुरेण वै । विस्मितोऽभून्मुनिश्रेष्ठ हृदि ग्लानिमवाप ह

evaṁ hi suciraṁ yuddhaṁ kṛtvā tenāsureṇa vai vismito'bhūnmuniśreṣṭha hṛdi glānimavāpa ha

Having thus fought a long battle with that asura, O best of sages, Vishnu grew astonished, and in his heart felt a certain weariness.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.155.35)

अथ प्रसन्नो भगवान्मायी मायाविदां वरः । उवाच दैत्यराजानं मेघगम्भीरया गिरा

atha prasanno bhagavānmāyī māyāvidāṁ varaḥ uvāca daityarājānaṁ meghagambhīrayā girā

Then the illustrious Lord, wielder of maya, foremost among those skilled in maya, being pleased, spoke to the king of the daityas in a voice deep as thunderclouds.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.155.36)

विष्णुरुवाच । भो भो दैत्यवरश्रेष्ठ धन्यस्त्वं रणदुर्मदः । महायुधवरैर्यत्त्वं न भीतो हि महाप्रभुः

viṣṇuruvāca bho bho daityavaraśreṣṭha dhanyastvaṁ raṇadurmadaḥ mahāyudhavarairyattvaṁ na bhīto hi mahāprabhuḥ

Vishnu said: "O best and foremost of daityas, blessed are you, furious in battle — great lord that you are, you have shown no fear even before these mighty weapons."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.155.37)

एभिरेवायुधैरुग्रैर्दैत्या हि बहवो हताः । महाजौ दुर्मदा वीराश्छिन्नदेहा मृतिं गताः

ebhirevāyudhairugrairdaityā hi bahavo hatāḥ mahājau durmadā vīrāśchinnadehā mṛtiṁ gatāḥ

"By these very terrible weapons many mighty, unyielding, heroic daityas have been cut apart and have met their death."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.155.38)

युद्धेन ते महादैत्य प्रसन्नोऽस्मि महान्भवान् । न दृष्टस्त्वत्समो वीरस्त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे

yuddhena te mahādaitya prasanno'smi mahānbhavān na dṛṣṭastvatsamo vīrastrailokye sacarācare

"O great daitya, by your battle I am well pleased; you are truly great — never have I seen a hero equal to you in all three worlds, with all that moves and is still."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.155.39)

वरं वरय दैत्येन्द्र प्रीतोऽस्मि तव विक्रमात् । अदेयमपि ते दद्मि यत्ते मनसि वर्तते

varaṁ varaya daityendra prīto'smi tava vikramāt adeyamapi te dadmi yatte manasi vartate

"Choose a boon, O lord of daityas; I am delighted by your valor. Even what should not be given, I shall give you — whatever is in your mind."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.155.40)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य विष्णोर्मायाविनो हरेः । प्रत्युवाच महाबुद्धिर्दैत्यराजो जलन्धरः

sanatkumāra uvāca ityākarṇya vacastasya viṣṇormāyāvino hareḥ pratyuvāca mahābuddhirdaityarājo jalandharaḥ

Sanatkumara said: "Hearing these words of Vishnu, Hari the wielder of maya, the highly intelligent king of the daityas, Jalandhara, replied."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.155.41)

जलन्धर उवाच । यदि भावुक तुष्टोऽसि वरमेतं ददस्व मे । मद्भगिन्या मया सार्द्धं मद्गेहे सगणो वस

jalandhara uvāca yadi bhāvuka tuṣṭo'si varametaṁ dadasva me madbhaginyā mayā sārddhaṁ madgehe sagaṇo vasa

Jalandhara said: "If, O gracious one, you are pleased, grant me this boon: dwell in my house, together with your hosts, along with my sister and myself."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.155.42)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तदाकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य महादैत्यस्य खिन्नधीः । तथास्त्विति च देवेशो जगाद भगवान् हरिः

sanatkumāra uvāca tadākarṇya vacastasya mahādaityasya khinnadhīḥ tathāstviti ca deveśo jagāda bhagavān hariḥ

Sanatkumara said: "Hearing these words of the great daitya, the Lord of gods, illustrious Hari, his mind troubled, said, 'So be it.'"

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.155.43)

उवास स ततो विष्णुः सर्वदेवगणैस्सह । जलन्धरं नाम पुरमागत्य रमया सह

uvāsa sa tato viṣṇuḥ sarvadevagaṇaissaha jalandharaṁ nāma puramāgatya ramayā saha

Then Vishnu, together with all the hosts of gods, and with Rama (Lakshmi), came to the city named Jalandhara and dwelt there.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.155.44)

अथो जलन्धरो दैत्यः स्वभगिन्या च विष्णुना । उवास स्वालयं प्राप्तो हर्षाकुलितमानसः

atho jalandharo daityaḥ svabhaginyā ca viṣṇunā uvāsa svālayaṁ prāpto harṣākulitamānasaḥ

Then the daitya Jalandhara too, having reached his own dwelling together with his sister and Vishnu, remained there, his mind overwhelmed with joy.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.155.45)

जलन्धरोऽथ देवानामधिकारेषु दानवान् । स्थापयित्वा सहर्षः सन् पुनरागान्महीतलम्

jalandharo'tha devānāmadhikāreṣu dānavān sthāpayitvā saharṣaḥ san punarāgānmahītalam

Then Jalandhara, having installed danavas in the offices of the gods, joyfully returned again to the surface of the earth.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.155.46)

देवगन्धर्वसिद्धेषु यत्किञ्चिद्रत्नसञ्चितम् । तदात्मवशगं कृत्वाऽतिष्ठत्सागरनन्दनः

devagandharvasiddheṣu yatkiñcidratnasañcitam tadātmavaśagaṁ kṛtvā'tiṣṭhatsāgaranandanaḥ

Whatever store of jewels there was among gods, gandharvas, and siddhas, the son of the ocean brought it all under his own control, and thus he abided.

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.155.47)

पातालभवने दैत्यं निशुम्भं सुमहाबलम् । स्थापयित्वा स शेषादीनानयद्भूतलं बली

pātālabhavane daityaṁ niśumbhaṁ sumahābalam sthāpayitvā sa śeṣādīnānayadbhūtalaṁ balī

Having installed the exceedingly mighty daitya Nishumbha in the nether world of Patala, that mighty one brought Shesha and the others up to the surface of the earth.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.155.48)

देवगन्धर्वसिद्धौघान् सर्पराक्षसमानुषान् । स्वपुरे नागरान्कृत्वा शशास भुवनत्रयम्

devagandharvasiddhaughān sarparākṣasamānuṣān svapure nāgarānkṛtvā śaśāsa bhuvanatrayam

Making the hosts of gods, gandharvas, siddhas, serpents, rakshasas, and men into citizens of his own city, he ruled over the three worlds.

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.155.49)

एवं जलन्धरः कृत्वा देवान्स्ववशवर्तिनः । धर्मेण पालयामास प्रजाः पुत्रानिवौरसान्

evaṁ jalandharaḥ kṛtvā devānsvavaśavartinaḥ dharmeṇa pālayāmāsa prajāḥ putrānivaurasān

Thus Jalandhara, having brought the gods under his own sway, protected his subjects according to dharma, as if they were his own true-born sons.

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.155.50)

न कश्चिद्व्याधितो नैव दुःखितो न कृशस्तथा । न दीनो दृश्यते तस्मिन्धर्माद्राज्यं प्रशासति

na kaścidvyādhito naiva duḥkhito na kṛśastathā na dīno dṛśyate tasmindharmādrājyaṁ praśāsati

While he ruled his kingdom according to dharma, no one there was seen to be diseased, none sorrowful, none wasted, none wretched.
