The Dialogue Between Narada and Jalandhara
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.156.1)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । एवं शासति धर्मेण महीं तस्मिन्महासुरे । बभूवुर्दुःखिनो देवा भर्त्र्यभावान्मुनीश्वर
sanatkumāra uvāca evaṁ śāsati dharmeṇa mahīṁ tasminmahāsure babhūvurduḥkhino devā bhartryabhāvānmunīśvara
Sanatkumara said: "While that great asura thus ruled the earth according to dharma, O lord of sages, the gods grew sorrowful for want of their own lord."
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.156.2)
दुःखितास्ते सुराः सर्वे शिवं शरणमाययुः । मनसा शङ्करं देवदेवं सर्वप्रभुं प्रभुम्
duḥkhitāste surāḥ sarve śivaṁ śaraṇamāyayuḥ manasā śaṅkaraṁ devadevaṁ sarvaprabhuṁ prabhum
Those sorrowful gods, all of them, took refuge in Shiva, turning in their minds to Shankara, the god of gods, the lord of all.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.156.3)
तुष्टुवुर्वाग्भिरिष्टाभिर्भगवन्तं महेश्वरम् । निवृत्तये स्वदुःखस्य सर्वदं भक्तवत्सलम्
tuṣṭuvurvāgbhiriṣṭābhirbhagavantaṁ maheśvaram nivṛttaye svaduḥkhasya sarvadaṁ bhaktavatsalam
With heartfelt words they praised the illustrious Maheshvara, the giver of all, the lover of his devotees, so that their own sorrow might cease.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.156.4)
आहूय स महादेवो भक्तानां सर्वकामदः । नारदं प्रेरयामास देवकार्यचिकीर्षया
āhūya sa mahādevo bhaktānāṁ sarvakāmadaḥ nāradaṁ prerayāmāsa devakāryacikīrṣayā
That Mahadeva, granter of every desire to his devotees, summoned Narada and, intent on furthering the gods' cause, sent him forth.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.156.5)
अथ देवमुनिर्ज्ञानी शम्भुभक्तः सतां गतिः । शिवाज्ञया ययौ दैत्यपुरे देवान्स नारदः
atha devamunirjñānī śambhubhaktaḥ satāṁ gatiḥ śivājñayā yayau daityapure devānsa nāradaḥ
Then that wise divine sage, devoted to Shambhu, refuge of the virtuous — Narada — by Shiva's command, went to the daitya's city, to the gods.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.156.6)
व्याकुलास्ते सुराः सर्वे वासवाद्या द्रुतं मुनिम् । आगच्छन्तं समालोक्य समुत्तस्थुर्हि नारदम्
vyākulāste surāḥ sarve vāsavādyā drutaṁ munim āgacchantaṁ samālokya samuttasthurhi nāradam
Those troubled gods, headed by Vasava, seeing the sage Narada swiftly approaching, all rose up at once.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.156.7)
ददुस्त आसनं नत्त्वा मुनये प्रीतिपूर्वकम् । नारदाय सुराः शक्रमुखा उत्कण्ठिताननाः
dadusta āsanaṁ nattvā munaye prītipūrvakam nāradāya surāḥ śakramukhā utkaṇṭhitānanāḥ
Bowing to the sage, Indra and the other gods, their faces eager, offered a seat to Narada with affection.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.156.8)
सुखासीनं मुनिवरमासने सुप्रणम्य तम् । पुनः प्रोचुः सुरा दीना वासवाद्या मुनीश्वरम्
sukhāsīnaṁ munivaramāsane supraṇamya tam punaḥ procuḥ surā dīnā vāsavādyā munīśvaram
Having comfortably seated the best of sages and bowed to him well, the wretched gods, headed by Vasava, again addressed the lord of sages.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.156.9)
देवा ऊचुः । भो भो मुनिवरश्रेष्ठ दुःखं शृणु कृपाकर । श्रुत्वा तन्नाशय क्षिप्रं प्रभुस्त्वं शङ्करप्रियः
devā ūcuḥ bho bho munivaraśreṣṭha duḥkhaṁ śṛṇu kṛpākara śrutvā tannāśaya kṣipraṁ prabhustvaṁ śaṅkarapriyaḥ
The gods said: "O best and foremost of sages, O compassionate one, hear our sorrow; having heard it, swiftly destroy it — you are able, and dear to Shankara."
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.156.10)
जलन्धरेण दैत्येन सुरा विद्राविता भृशम् । स्वस्थानाद्भर्तृभावाच्च दुःखिता वयमाकुलाः
jalandhareṇa daityena surā vidrāvitā bhṛśam svasthānādbhartṛbhāvācca duḥkhitā vayamākulāḥ
"By the daitya Jalandhara we gods have been utterly driven out; deprived of our own places and our lordship, we are sorrowful and distressed."
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.156.11)
स्वस्थानादुष्णरश्मिश्च चन्द्रो निस्सारितस्तथा । वह्निश्च धर्मराजश्च लोकपालास्तथेतरे
svasthānāduṣṇaraśmiśca candro nissāritastathā vahniśca dharmarājaśca lokapālāstathetare
"The hot-rayed sun has been driven from his own place, and likewise the moon; Agni, Dharmaraja, and the other guardians of the quarters as well."
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.156.12)
सुबलिष्ठेन वै तेन सर्वे देवाः प्रपीडिताः । दुःखं प्राप्ता वयं चाति शरणं त्वां समागताः
subaliṣṭhena vai tena sarve devāḥ prapīḍitāḥ duḥkhaṁ prāptā vayaṁ cāti śaraṇaṁ tvāṁ samāgatāḥ
"By that exceedingly powerful one all the gods have been afflicted; fallen into the greatest sorrow, we have come to you for refuge."
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.156.13)
सङ्ग्रामे स हृषीकेशं स्ववशं कृतवान् बली । जलन्धरो महादैत्यः सर्वामरविमर्दकः
saṅgrāme sa hṛṣīkeśaṁ svavaśaṁ kṛtavān balī jalandharo mahādaityaḥ sarvāmaravimardakaḥ
"That mighty Jalandhara, the great daitya who crushes all the immortals, has brought even Hrishikesha under his own sway in battle."
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.156.14)
तस्य वश्यो वराधीनोऽवात्सीत्तत्सदने हरिः । स लक्ष्म्या सहितो विष्णुर्यो नः सर्वार्थसाधकः
tasya vaśyo varādhīno'vātsīttatsadane hariḥ sa lakṣmyā sahito viṣṇuryo naḥ sarvārthasādhakaḥ
"Subject to him, bound by a boon, Hari now dwells in his house — that same Vishnu, together with Lakshmi, who accomplishes all our ends."
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.156.15)
जलन्धरविनाशाय यत्नं कुरु महामते । त्वं नो दैववशात्प्राप्तः सदा सर्वार्थसाधकः
jalandharavināśāya yatnaṁ kuru mahāmate tvaṁ no daivavaśātprāptaḥ sadā sarvārthasādhakaḥ
"O wise one, strive for the destruction of Jalandhara; by the working of fate we have found you, ever the accomplisher of all our ends."
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.156.16)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तेषाममराणां स नारदः । आश्वास्य मुनिशार्दूलस्तानुवाच कृपाकरः
sanatkumāra uvāca ityākarṇya vacasteṣāmamarāṇāṁ sa nāradaḥ āśvāsya muniśārdūlastānuvāca kṛpākaraḥ
Sanatkumara said: "Hearing these words of the immortals, that Narada, tiger among sages, compassionate, comforted them and spoke."
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.156.17)
नारद उवाच । जानेऽहं वै सुरा यूयं दैत्यराजपराजिताः । दुःख प्राप्ताः पीडिताश्च स्थानान्निस्सारिताः खलु
nārada uvāca jāne'haṁ vai surā yūyaṁ daityarājaparājitāḥ duḥkha prāptāḥ pīḍitāśca sthānānnissāritāḥ khalu
Narada said: "I know, O gods, that you have been defeated by the king of daityas, that you have fallen into sorrow, been afflicted, and driven from your places."
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.156.18)
स्वशक्त्या भवतां स्वार्थं करिष्ये नात्र संशयः । अनुकूलोऽहमिह वो दुःखं प्राप्ता यतोऽमराः
svaśaktyā bhavatāṁ svārthaṁ kariṣye nātra saṁśayaḥ anukūlo'hamiha vo duḥkhaṁ prāptā yato'marāḥ
"With my own power I shall accomplish your purpose — of this there is no doubt. I am favorable to you here, O immortals, since you have fallen into sorrow."
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.156.19)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । एवमुक्त्वा मुनिश्रेष्ठो द्रष्टुं दानववल्लभम् । आश्वास्य सकलान्देवाञ्जलन्धरसभां ययौ
sanatkumāra uvāca evamuktvā muniśreṣṭho draṣṭuṁ dānavavallabham āśvāsya sakalāndevāñjalandharasabhāṁ yayau
Sanatkumara said: "Having spoken thus, the best of sages, having comforted all the gods, went to the assembly of Jalandhara, darling of the danavas, to see him."
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.156.20)
अथागतं मुनिश्रेष्ठं दृष्ट्वा दैत्यो जलन्धरः । उत्थाय परया भक्त्या ददौ श्रेष्ठासनं वरम्
athāgataṁ muniśreṣṭhaṁ dṛṣṭvā daityo jalandharaḥ utthāya parayā bhaktyā dadau śreṣṭhāsanaṁ varam
Then the daitya Jalandhara, seeing the best of sages arrive, rose up and with the greatest devotion offered him a most excellent seat.
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.156.21)
स तं सम्पूज्य विधिवद्दानवेन्द्रोऽतिविस्मितः । सुप्रहस्य तदा वाक्यं जगाद मुनिसत्तमम्
sa taṁ sampūjya vidhivaddānavendro'tivismitaḥ suprahasya tadā vākyaṁ jagāda munisattamam
Having duly worshipped him, the lord of the danavas, greatly astonished, then smiling broadly, spoke these words to that foremost of sages.
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.156.22)
जलन्धर उवाच । कुत आगम्यते ब्रह्मन् किं च दृष्टं त्वया क्वचित् । यदर्थमिह आयातस्तदाज्ञापय मां मुने
jalandhara uvāca kuta āgamyate brahman kiṁ ca dṛṣṭaṁ tvayā kvacit yadarthamiha āyātastadājñāpaya māṁ mune
Jalandhara said: "O brahmin, from where have you come, and what have you seen anywhere? Tell me, O sage, the purpose for which you have come here."
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.156.23)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य दैत्येन्द्रस्य महामुनिः । प्रत्युवाच प्रसन्नात्मा नारदो हि जलन्धरम्
sanatkumāra uvāca ityākarṇya vacastasya daityendrasya mahāmuniḥ pratyuvāca prasannātmā nārado hi jalandharam
Sanatkumara said: "Hearing these words of the lord of daityas, the great sage Narada, his mind pleased, replied to Jalandhara."
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.156.24)
नारद उवाच । सर्वदानवदैत्येन्द्र जलन्धर महामते । धन्यस्त्वं सर्वलोकेश रत्नभोक्ता त्वमेव हि
nārada uvāca sarvadānavadaityendra jalandhara mahāmate dhanyastvaṁ sarvalokeśa ratnabhoktā tvameva hi
Narada said: "O Jalandhara, lord of all danavas and daityas, wise one, blessed are you, lord of all worlds; you alone are the enjoyer of every treasure."
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.156.25)
मदागमनहेतुं वै शृणु दैत्येन्द्रसत्तम । यदर्थमिह चायातस्त्वहं वक्ष्येऽखिलं हि तत्
madāgamanahetuṁ vai śṛṇu daityendrasattama yadarthamiha cāyātastvahaṁ vakṣye'khilaṁ hi tat
"Hear, O best of the lords of daityas, the reason for my coming; I shall tell you fully the purpose for which I have come here."
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.156.26)
गतः कैलासशिखरं दैत्येन्द्राहं यदृच्छया । योजनायुतविस्तीर्णं कल्पद्रुममहावनम्
gataḥ kailāsaśikharaṁ daityendrāhaṁ yadṛcchayā yojanāyutavistīrṇaṁ kalpadrumamahāvanam
"O lord of daityas, by chance I went to the peak of Kailasa, to that great forest of wish-fulfilling trees, ten thousand yojanas in extent."
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.156.27)
कामधेनुशताकीर्णं चिन्तामणिसुदीपितम् । सर्वरुक्ममयं दिव्यं सर्वत्राद्भुतशोभितम्
kāmadhenuśatākīrṇaṁ cintāmaṇisudīpitam sarvarukmamayaṁ divyaṁ sarvatrādbhutaśobhitam
"Thronged with hundreds of wish-granting cows, brilliant with wish-fulfilling jewels, wholly made of gold, divine, wondrously resplendent on every side."
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.156.28)
तत्रोमया सहासीनं दृष्टवानस्मि शङ्करम् । सर्वाङ्गसुन्दरं गौरं त्रिनेत्रं चन्द्रशेखरम्
tatromayā sahāsīnaṁ dṛṣṭavānasmi śaṅkaram sarvāṅgasundaraṁ gauraṁ trinetraṁ candraśekharam
"There I saw Shankara seated together with Uma — beautiful in every limb, fair of hue, three-eyed, wearing the crescent moon."
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.156.29)
तं दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यं वितर्को मेऽभवत्तदा । क्वापीदृशी भवेद् वृद्धिस्त्रैलोक्ये वा न वेति च
taṁ dṛṣṭvā mahadāścaryaṁ vitarko me'bhavattadā kvāpīdṛśī bhaved vṛddhistrailokye vā na veti ca
"Seeing him, I was greatly astonished, and this thought arose in me: could such prosperity exist anywhere else in all three worlds, or not?"
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.156.30)
तावत्तवापि दैत्येन्द्र समृद्धिः संस्मृता मया । तद्विलोकनकामोऽहं त्वत्सान्निध्यमिहागतः
tāvattavāpi daityendra samṛddhiḥ saṁsmṛtā mayā tadvilokanakāmo'haṁ tvatsānnidhyamihāgataḥ
"Then, O lord of daityas, I remembered your own prosperity as well; desiring to see it, I have come here into your presence."
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.156.31)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इति नारदतः श्रुत्वा स दैत्येन्द्रो जलन्धरः । स्वसमृद्धिं समग्रां वै दर्शयामास सादरम्
sanatkumāra uvāca iti nāradataḥ śrutvā sa daityendro jalandharaḥ svasamṛddhiṁ samagrāṁ vai darśayāmāsa sādaram
Sanatkumara said: "Hearing this from Narada, that lord of daityas, Jalandhara, respectfully showed him the whole of his own prosperity."
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.156.32)
दृष्ट्वा स नारदो ज्ञानी देवकार्यसुसाधकः । प्रभुप्रेरणया प्राह दैत्येन्द्रं तं जलन्धरम्
dṛṣṭvā sa nārado jñānī devakāryasusādhakaḥ prabhupreraṇayā prāha daityendraṁ taṁ jalandharam
Having seen it, that wise Narada, skilled at accomplishing the gods' purpose, prompted by the Lord, spoke to that lord of daityas, Jalandhara.
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.156.33)
नारद् उवाच । तवास्ति सुसमृद्धिर्हि वरवीराखिलाधुना । त्रैलोक्यस्य पतिस्त्वं हि चित्रं किं चात्र सम्भवम्
nārad uvāca tavāsti susamṛddhirhi varavīrākhilādhunā trailokyasya patistvaṁ hi citraṁ kiṁ cātra sambhavam
Narada said: "You truly possess the greatest prosperity now, O best of heroes, above all others; you are lord of the three worlds — what wonder is there in this?"
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.156.34)
मणयो रत्नपुञ्जाश्च गजाद्याश्च समृद्धयः । ते गृहेऽद्य विभान्तीह यानि रत्नानि तान्यपि
maṇayo ratnapuñjāśca gajādyāśca samṛddhayaḥ te gṛhe'dya vibhāntīha yāni ratnāni tānyapi
"Gems, heaps of jewels, elephants and other forms of wealth — whatever treasures there are, they all shine today in your house."
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.156.35)
गजरत्नं त्वयानीतं शक्रस्यैरावतस्तथा । अश्वरत्नं महावीर सूर्यस्योच्चैःश्रवा हयः
gajaratnaṁ tvayānītaṁ śakrasyairāvatastathā aśvaratnaṁ mahāvīra sūryasyoccaiḥśravā hayaḥ
"The jewel among elephants, Indra's Airavata, you have brought here; and, O great hero, the jewel among horses, the Sun's steed Uchchaihshravas."
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.156.36)
कल्पवृक्षस्त्वयानीतो निधयो धनदस्य च । हंसयुक्तविमानं च त्वयानीतं हि वेधसः
kalpavṛkṣastvayānīto nidhayo dhanadasya ca haṁsayuktavimānaṁ ca tvayānītaṁ hi vedhasaḥ
"You have brought here the wish-fulfilling tree, and the treasures of Kubera, lord of wealth; and Brahma's swan-yoked chariot too you have brought."
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.156.37)
इत्येवं वररत्नानि दिवि पृथ्व्यां रसातले । यानि दैत्येन्द्र ते भान्ति गृहे तानि समन्ततः
ityevaṁ vararatnāni divi pṛthvyāṁ rasātale yāni daityendra te bhānti gṛhe tāni samantataḥ
"Thus, O lord of daityas, whatever excellent treasures exist in heaven, on earth, and in the netherworld — all of them shine, on every side, in your house."
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.156.38)
त्वत्समृद्धिमिमां पश्यन्सम्पूर्णां विविधामहम् । प्रसन्नोऽस्मि महावीर गजाश्वादिसुशोभिताम्
tvatsamṛddhimimāṁ paśyansampūrṇāṁ vividhāmaham prasanno'smi mahāvīra gajāśvādisuśobhitām
"Seeing this complete and manifold prosperity of yours, adorned with elephants, horses, and the rest, I am well pleased, O great hero."
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.156.39)
जायारत्नं महाश्रेष्ठं जलन्धर न ते गृहे । तदानेतुं विशेषेण स्त्रीरत्नं वै त्वमर्हसि
jāyāratnaṁ mahāśreṣṭhaṁ jalandhara na te gṛhe tadānetuṁ viśeṣeṇa strīratnaṁ vai tvamarhasi
"Yet, O Jalandhara, the greatest jewel of all — a jewel among wives — is not in your house; that jewel among women you truly deserve to bring here especially."
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.156.40)
यस्य गेहे सुरत्नानि सर्वाणि हि जलन्धर । जायारत्नं न चेत्तानि न शोभन्ते वृथा ध्रुवम्
yasya gehe suratnāni sarvāṇi hi jalandhara jāyāratnaṁ na cettāni na śobhante vṛthā dhruvam
"O Jalandhara, in whose house are all fine jewels, yet the jewel among wives is absent — then, without doubt, all those shine there in vain."
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.156.41)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्येवं वचनं श्रुत्वा नारदस्य महात्मनः । उवाच दैत्यराजो हि मदनाकुलमानसः
sanatkumāra uvāca ityevaṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā nāradasya mahātmanaḥ uvāca daityarājo hi madanākulamānasaḥ
Sanatkumara said: "Hearing these words of the great-souled Narada, the king of daityas, his mind now stirred by desire, spoke."
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.156.42)
जलन्धर उवाच । भो भो नारद देवर्षे नमस्तेऽस्तु महाप्रभो । जायारत्नवरं कुत्र वर्तते तद्वदाधुना
jalandhara uvāca bho bho nārada devarṣe namaste'stu mahāprabho jāyāratnavaraṁ kutra vartate tadvadādhunā
Jalandhara said: "O Narada, divine sage, great lord, salutations to you! Where does that finest jewel among wives dwell? Tell me now."
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.156.43)
ब्रह्माण्डे यत्र कुत्रापि तद्रत्नं यदि वर्त्तते । तदानेष्ये ततो ब्रह्मन्सत्यं सत्यं न संशयः
brahmāṇḍe yatra kutrāpi tadratnaṁ yadi varttate tadāneṣye tato brahmansatyaṁ satyaṁ na saṁśayaḥ
"Wherever in the universe that jewel may be, O brahmin, from there I shall bring it — truly, truly, there is no doubt of this."
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.156.44)
नारद उवाच । कैलासे ह्यतिरम्ये च सर्वर्द्धिसुसमाकुले । योगिरूपधरः शम्भुरस्ति तत्र दिगम्बरः
nārada uvāca kailāse hyatiramye ca sarvarddhisusamākule yogirūpadharaḥ śambhurasti tatra digambaraḥ
Narada said: "On Kailasa, exceedingly beautiful, filled with every prosperity, there dwells Shambhu, bearing the form of a yogi, clad only in the directions."
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.156.45)
तस्य भार्या सुरम्या हि सर्वलक्षणलक्षिता । सर्वाङ्गसुन्दरीनाम्ना पार्वतीति मनोहरा
tasya bhāryā suramyā hi sarvalakṣaṇalakṣitā sarvāṅgasundarīnāmnā pārvatīti manoharā
"His wife, exceedingly lovely, marked with every auspicious sign, beautiful in every limb, is named Parvati, enchanting."
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.156.46)
तदीदृशं रूपमनन्यसङ्गतं दृष्टं न कुत्रापि कुतूहलाढ्यम् । अत्यद्भुतं मोहनकृत्सुयोगिनां सुदर्शनीयं परमर्द्धिकारि
tadīdṛśaṁ rūpamananyasaṅgataṁ dṛṣṭaṁ na kutrāpi kutūhalāḍhyam atyadbhutaṁ mohanakṛtsuyogināṁ sudarśanīyaṁ paramarddhikāri
"Such a form, matched by none other, filled with wonder, has never been seen anywhere; most astonishing, bewitching even to the greatest yogis, most beautiful to behold, and bestowing the highest prosperity."
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.156.47)
स्वचित्ते कल्पयाम्यद्य शिवादन्यः समृद्धिमान् । जायारत्नान्विताद्वीर त्रिलोक्यां न जलन्धर
svacitte kalpayāmyadya śivādanyaḥ samṛddhimān jāyāratnānvitādvīra trilokyāṁ na jalandhara
"In my mind I hold that today, O hero Jalandhara, there is no one in all three worlds more prosperous than Shiva, possessed as he is of such a jewel among wives."
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.156.48)
यस्या लावण्यजलधौ निमग्नश्चतुराननः । स्वधैर्य्यं मुमुचे पूर्वं तया कान्योपमीयते
yasyā lāvaṇyajaladhau nimagnaścaturānanaḥ svadhairyyaṁ mumuce pūrvaṁ tayā kānyopamīyate
"In the ocean of whose loveliness even four-faced Brahma once sank and lost his composure — with her, what other woman could be compared?"
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.156.49)
गतरागोऽपि हि यया मदनारिः स्वलीलया । निजतन्त्रोऽपि यतः स स्वात्मवशगः कृतः
gatarāgo'pi hi yayā madanāriḥ svalīlayā nijatantro'pi yataḥ sa svātmavaśagaḥ kṛtaḥ
"By whose mere play even the enemy of Kama — Shiva, free of passion, self-ruled though he was — was made subject, overcome by love for her."
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.156.50)
यथा स्त्रीरत्नसम्भोक्तुः समृद्धिस्तस्य साभवत् । तथा न तव दैत्येन्द्र सर्वरत्नाधिपस्य च
yathā strīratnasambhoktuḥ samṛddhistasya sābhavat tathā na tava daityendra sarvaratnādhipasya ca
"Such prosperity as belongs to the enjoyer of that jewel among women is not yours, O lord of daityas, even though you are lord of every other jewel."
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.156.51)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा स तु देवर्षिर्नारदो लोकविश्रुतः । ययौ विहायसा देवोपकारकरणोद्यतः
sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā sa tu devarṣirnārado lokaviśrutaḥ yayau vihāyasā devopakārakaraṇodyataḥ
Sanatkumara said: "Having spoken thus, that divine sage Narada, renowned throughout the worlds, intent on furthering the gods' benefit, departed through the sky."
