Sanatkumara said: "Om — salutation to you, Lord of the gods, worshipped by both gods and demons, the great god of past and future; to the tawny-golden-eyed one, to Strength itself, to the embodiment of intellect, clad in tiger-skin, to the fire-born; to the source of the three worlds, to the Lord, to Hara, of tawny eyes, ender of ages, fire itself; to the lord of the ganas, protector of worlds, mighty-armed, great-handed, trident-bearer, great-tusked; to Time, the great lord, the imperishable, the form of Time, blue-throated, great-bellied; to the chief of the ganas, the soul of all, creator of all, all-pervading, slayer of death, keeper of the Pariyatra vow; to the celibate, who has reached the end of the Vedanta and the end of austerity, lord of creatures, formless, trident-handed; to the one whose banner is the bull, to Hari, matted-haired, crested, staff-bearing, greatly renowned, lord of beings; to the cave-dweller, accompanied by vina, drum, and cymbals, immortal, beautiful to behold; radiant as the rising sun, dweller in the cremation-ground, blessed lord, husband of Uma, subduer of foes; to the one who struck out Bhaga's eye, who broke Pushan's teeth, doer of fierce deeds, noose in hand; the very time of dissolution, meteor-mouthed, fire-bannered, the sage, the blazing one, lord of the people, the uplifter; the progenitor, the fourth, best of worlds, Vamadeva, skilled in speech, mendicant from the left; the beggar, in mendicant's form, matted-haired, self-existent and matted, who stayed the very hand of Indra; who stayed the Vasus, the sacrifice, the performer of sacrifice, Time, the wise one, the honey-maker, the restless; lord of forest trees, worshipped equally in every hermitage, sustainer of the world, creator of the world; the Purusha, the eternal, the fixed one, overseer of dharma, of the threefold path, who brings beings into being; three-eyed, of many forms, radiant as ten thousand suns, the god resounding with every instrument; liberator from every affliction, the binder, sustainer of all, the highest dharma; Pushpadanta, the undivided, the face of all, taker of all, golden-eared, the gatekeeper; the terrible, of terrible valor — Om, salutation again and again." Having chanted this excellent mantra, Shukra emerged from the cage of the belly by the path of the linga, fierce as Shambhu's own seed.

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.187.2)

gauryā gṛhītaḥ putrārthaṁ viśveśena tataḥ kṛtaḥ ajaraścāmaraḥ śrīmāndvitīya iva śaṅkaraḥ

Then Gauri took him up as a son, and the Lord of the universe made him ageless and immortal, glorious — like a second Shankara.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.187.3)

tribhirvarṣasahasraistu samatītairmahītale maheśvarātpunarjātaḥ śukro vedanidhirmuniḥ

When three thousand years had passed upon the earth, Shukra — that sage who is a treasury of the Vedas — was born again from Maheshvara.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.187.4)

dadarśa śūle saṁśuṣkaṁ dhyāyantaṁ parameśvaram andhakaṁ dhairyasampannaṁ dānaveśaṁ tapasvinam

He saw Andhaka, lord of the danavas, withered upon the trident yet meditating on the Supreme Lord — steadfast and ascetic.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.187.5)

mahādevaṁ virūpākṣaṁ candrārddhakṛtaśekharam amṛtaṁ śāśvataṁ sthāṇuṁ nīlakaṇṭhaṁ pinākinam

[He meditated on] Mahadeva, the strange-eyed one, crowned with the half-moon — the immortal, the eternal, the unmoving pillar, blue-throated, wielder of the Pinaka.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.187.6)

vṛṣabhākṣaṁ mahājñeyaṁ puruṣaṁ sarvakāmadam kāmāriṁ kāmadahanaṁ kāmarūpaṁ kapardinam

The bull-eyed one, the great object of knowledge, the Purusha who grants every desire — foe of Kama, burner of Kama, of Kama's own form, matted-haired.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.187.7)

virūpaṁ giriśaṁ bhīmaṁ sragviṇaṁ raktavāsasam yoginaṁ kāladahanaṁ tripuraghnaṁ kapālinam

Of strange form, lord of the mountain, terrible, garlanded, clad in red — the yogin, burner of Death, destroyer of Tripura, skull-bearer.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.187.8)

gūḍhavrataṁ guptamantraṁ gambhīraṁ bhāvagocaram aṇimādiguṇādhāraṁ trilokaiśvaryadāyakam

Of hidden vows, secret mantra, profound, known only through devotion — the ground of the powers beginning with animā, bestower of lordship over the three worlds.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.187.9)

vīraṁ vīrahaṇaṁ ghoraṁ virūpaṁ māṁsalaṁ paṭum mahāmāṁsādamunmattaṁ bhairavaṁ vai maheśvaram

The hero, slayer of heroes, terrible, strange of form, fleshy, keen — the great flesh-eater, the frenzied Bhairava, Maheshvara himself.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.187.10)

trailokyadrāvaṇaṁ lubdhaṁ lubdhakaṁ yajñasūdanam kṛttikānāṁ sutairyuktamunmattaṁ kṛttivāsasam

He who makes the three worlds tremble, the greedy one, the hunter, destroyer of sacrifice — attended by the son of the Krittikas, the frenzied one, clad in an elephant's hide.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.187.11)

gajakṛttiparīdhānaṁ kṣubdhaṁ bhujagabhūṣaṇam dattālambaṁ ca vetālaṁ ghoraṁ śākinipūjitam

Clothed in an elephant-hide, agitated, adorned with serpents — giver of support to the Vetala, the terrible one, worshipped by Shakinis.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.187.12)

aghoraṁ ghoradaityaghnaṁ ghoraghoṣaṁ vanaspatim bhasmāṅgaṁ jaṭilaṁ śuddhaṁ bheruṇḍaśatasevitam

The Aghora, slayer of terrible daityas, of terrible roar, lord of forest-trees — his body smeared in ash, matted-haired, pure, attended by hundreds of Bherunda birds.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.187.13)

bhūteśvaraṁ bhūtanāthaṁ pañcabhūtāśritaṁ khagam krodhitaṁ niṣṭhuraṁ caṇḍaṁ caṇḍīśaṁ caṇḍikāpriyam

Lord of beings, master of the elements, resting in the five elements, sky-going — the wrathful, the harsh, the fierce, lord of Chandi, dear to Chandika.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.187.14)

caṇḍaṁ tuṅgaṁ garutmantaṁ nityamāsavabhojanam lelihānaṁ mahāraudraṁ mṛtyuṁ mṛtyoragocaram

The fierce, the lofty, the winged one, ever partaking of the wine-offering — the flame-tongued, the greatly terrible, Death himself, beyond the reach of death.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.187.15)

mṛtyormṛtyuṁ mahāsenaṁ śmaśānāraṇyavāsinam rāgaṁ virāgaṁ rāgāndhaṁ vītarāgaśatārcitam

The death of Death, the great general, dweller in the wilderness of the cremation-ground — passion, dispassion, blinded by passion, yet worshipped by a hundred who are free of passion.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.187.16)

sattvaṁ rajastamodharmamadharmaṁ vāsavānujam satyaṁ tvasatyaṁ sadrūpamasadrūpamahetukam

Sattva, rajas, tamas, dharma, and adharma, the younger brother of Vasava — truth and untruth, the form of the existent and of the non-existent, uncaused.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.187.17)

arddhanārīśvaraṁ bhānuṁ bhānukoṭiśataprabham yajñaṁ yajñapatiṁ rudramīśānaṁ varadaṁ śivam

The Lord who is half woman, the sun, radiant as a hundred million suns — the sacrifice, lord of sacrifice, Rudra, Ishana, the boon-giver, Shiva.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.187.18)

aṣṭottaraśataṁ hyetanmūrtīnāṁ paramātmanaḥ śivasya dānavo dhyāyan muktastasmānmahābhayāt

These are the hundred and eight forms of Shiva, the Supreme Self; meditating on them, the danava was freed from that great terror.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.187.19)

divyenāmṛtavarṣeṇa so'bhiṣiktaḥ kaparddinā tuṣṭena mocitaṁ tasmācchūlāgrādavaropitaḥ

The matted-haired one, pleased, anointed him with a divine shower of nectar, and freed him, bringing him down from the point of the trident.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.187.20)

uktaścātha mahādaityo maheśānena so'ndhakaḥ asuraḥ sāntvapūrvaṁ yatkṛtaṁ sarvaṁ mahātmanā

Then that great daitya, the asura Andhaka, was told by the great-souled Maheshana, with words of comfort, all that had happened.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.187.21)

īśvara uvāca bho bho daityendra tuṣṭo'smi yamena niyamena ca śauryeṇa tava dhairyeṇa varaṁ varaya suvrata

Ishvara said: "O lord of the daityas, I am pleased with your discipline and your observances, with your valor and your fortitude. O one of good vows, ask for a boon."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.187.22)

ārādhitastvayā nityaṁ sarvanirdhūtakalmaṣaḥ varado'haṁ varārhastvaṁ mahādaityendrasattama

"You have worshipped me constantly, and every stain of yours is washed away. I am the giver of boons, and you, best of the great lords of the daityas, are worthy of one."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.187.23)

sanatkumāra uvāca etacchrutvāndhakaḥ prāha vepamānaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ bhūmau jānudvayaṁ kṛtvā bhagavantamumāpatim

Sanatkumara said: Hearing this, Andhaka, trembling, hands joined, both knees set upon the ground, spoke to the Blessed Lord, husband of Uma.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.187.25)

andhaka uvāca bhagavanyanmayokto'si dīno hīnaḥ parātparaḥ harṣagadgadayā vācā mayā pūrvaṁ raṇājire

Andhaka said: "O Lord, O supreme beyond the supreme — what I once called you on the battlefield, wretched and lowly, I spoke with a voice choked by [misplaced] joy."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.187.26)

pārvatyāmapi duṣṭaṁ yatkāmadoṣātkṛtaṁ mayā kṣamyatāṁ me mahādeva kṛpaṇo duḥkhito bhṛśam

"Whatever wickedness I did toward Parvati out of the fault of desire — O Mahadeva, forgive it; I am wretched and greatly afflicted."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.187.28)

duḥkhitasya dayā kāryā kṛpaṇasya viśeṣataḥ dīnasya bhaktiyuktasya bhavatā nityameva hi

"Compassion is owed to the afflicted, especially to the wretched; upon the humble one full of devotion, you show it ever."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.187.29)

so'haṁ dīno bhaktiyukta āgataḥ śaraṇaṁ tava rakṣā mayi vidhātavyā racito'yaṁ mayāñjaliḥ

"I, that same wretched and devoted one, have come to your refuge. Let protection be granted me — this plea I make with folded hands."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.187.30)

"May this Devi, Mother of the world, be fully satisfied with me; abandoning all anger, may she look upon me with grace."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.187.31)

kvāsyāḥ krodhaḥ kva kṛpaṇo daityo'haṁ candraśekhara tatsoḍhā nāhamarddhenducūḍa śambho maheśvara

"Where is her anger, and where am I, a wretched daitya, O Chandrashekhara? I could not bear it, O crescent-crested Shambhu, Maheshvara."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.187.32)

kva bhavānparamodāraḥ kva cāhaṁ vivaśīkṛtaḥ kāmakrodhādibhirdoṣairjarasā mṛtyunā tathā

"Where are you, supremely generous, and where am I, made helpless by the faults of desire and anger, and by old age and death?"

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.187.33)

ayaṁ te vīrakaḥ putro yuddhaśauṇḍo mahābalaḥ kṛpaṇaṁ māṁ samālakṣya mā manyuvaśamanvagāḥ

"This mighty, battle-proud son of yours, Viraka — seeing me so wretched, may he not fall to the sway of anger."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.187.34)

tuṣārahāraśītāṁśuśaṅkhakundenduvarṇabhāk paśyeyaṁ pārvatīṁ nityaṁ mātaraṁ gurugauravāt

"May I forever behold Parvati, my mother — of complexion like frost, a pearl-necklace, the cool moon, a conch, a jasmine — with the reverence due a guru."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.187.35)

nityaṁ bhavadbhyāṁ bhaktastu nirvairo daivataiḥ saha nivaseyaṁ gaṇaiḥ sārddhaṁ śāntātmā yogacintakaḥ

"May I, ever devoted to you both, free of enmity with the gods, dwell together with the ganas, my soul at peace, absorbed in the thought of yoga."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.187.36)

"May I never again call to mind my hostile birth as a danava. O Maheshana, by your grace, grant me this supreme boon."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.187.37)

sanatkumāra uvāca etāvaduktvā vacanaṁ daityendro maunamāsthitaḥ dhyāyaṁstrilocanaṁ devaṁ pārvatīṁ prekṣya mātaram

Sanatkumara said: Having spoken thus far, the lord of the daityas fell silent, meditating on the three-eyed god, gazing upon Parvati as his mother.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.187.38)

tato dṛṣṭastu rudreṇa prasannenaiva cakṣuṣā smṛtavānpūrvavṛttāntamātmano janma cādbhutam

Then, beheld by Rudra with a gracious glance, he remembered his own former history and his wondrous birth.

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.187.39)

tasminsmṛte ca vṛttānte tataḥ pūrṇamanorathaḥ praṇamya mātāpitarau kṛtakṛtyo'bhavattataḥ

With that history remembered, his desire now fulfilled, he bowed to his mother and father and so became one whose purpose was accomplished.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.187.40)

pārvatyā mūrdhnyupāghrātaḥ śaṅkareṇa ca dhīmatā tathā'bhilaṣitaṁ lebhe tuṣṭād bālenduśekharāt

Kissed upon the head by Parvati, and by the wise Shankara, he thus obtained his heart's desire from the pleased crescent-moon-crested Lord.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.187.41)

etadvaḥ sarvamākhyātamandhakasya purātanam gāṇapatyaṁ mahādevaprasādātparasaukhyadam

All this ancient account of Andhaka has now been told to you — how, by the grace of Mahadeva, he attained the supreme-bliss-giving rank of a Ganapati.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.187.42)

mṛtyuñjayaśca kathito mantro mṛtyuvināśanaḥ paṭhitavyaḥ prayatnena sarvakāmaphalapradaḥ

And the Mrityunjaya mantra has been told, the destroyer of death — it should be recited with diligence, for it grants the fruit of every desire.
