Chapter 188All chaptersChapter 190

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.189.1)

vyāsa uvāca sanatkumāra sarvajña śrāvitā sukathādbhutā bhavatānugrahātprītyā śambhvanugrahanirbharā

Vyasa said: O all-knowing Sanatkumara, by your grace and with love you have made me hear this wondrous, excellent tale, brimming with the grace of Shambhu.

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.189.2)

idānīṁ śrotumicchāmi caritaṁ śaśimaulinaḥ gāṇapatyaṁ dadau prītyā yathā bāṇāsurāya vai

Now I wish to hear the deed of the moon-crested one — how, out of love, he granted the rank of a Ganapati to Banasura.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.189.3)

sanatkumāra uvāca śṛṇu vyāsādarāttāṁ vai kathāṁ śambhoḥ parātmanaḥ gāṇapatyaṁ yathā prītyā dadau bāṇāsurāya hi

Sanatkumara said: Listen with reverence, O Vyasa, to that story of Shambhu, the Supreme Self — how, out of love, he granted the rank of Ganapati to Banasura.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.189.4)

atraiva sucaritraṁ ca śaṅkarasya mahāprabhoḥ kṛṣṇena samaropyatra śambhorbāṇānugṛhṇataḥ

Here too lies the noble deed of Shankara, the great Lord — the battle with Krishna that took place here, while Shambhu was showing his grace to Bana.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.189.5)

atrānurūpaṁ śṛṇu me śivalīlānvitaṁ param itihāsaṁ mahāpuṇyaṁ manaḥ śrotrasukhāvaham

Hear from me this fitting and supreme legend, filled with the play of Shiva — a most meritorious history, delightful to both mind and ear.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.189.6)

brahmaputro marīciryo munirāsīnmahāmatiḥ mānasaḥ sarvaputreṣu jyeṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ prajāpatiḥ

Marichi, the mind-born son of Brahma, was a sage of great wisdom, the eldest and foremost among all his mind-born brothers — a Prajapati.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.189.7)

tasya putro mahātmāsītkaśyapo munisattamaḥ sṛṣṭipravṛddhako'tyantaṁ piturbhakto vidherapi

His son was the great-souled Kashyapa, best among sages, exceedingly prolific in creation, and devoted alike to his father and to Brahma.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.189.8)

tasya trayodaśamitā dakṣakanyāḥ suśīlikāḥ kaśyapasya munervyāsa patnyaścāsanpativratāḥ

O Vyasa, the sage Kashyapa had thirteen wives, all daughters of Daksha, of excellent character and devoted to their husband.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.189.9)

tatra jyeṣṭhā ditiścāsīddaityāstattanayāḥ smṛtāḥ anyāsāṁ ca sutā jātā devādyāḥ sacarācarāḥ

Among them, Diti was the eldest, and her sons are remembered as the daityas; from the others were born the gods and the rest, every moving and unmoving being.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.189.10)

jyeṣṭhāyāḥ prathamau putrau diteścāstāṁ mahābalau hiraṇyakaśipurjyeṣṭho hiraṇyākṣo'nujastataḥ

Diti's first two sons were both mighty: Hiranyakashipu the elder, and Hiranyaksha the younger.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.189.11)

hiraṇyakaśipoḥ putrāścatvāro daityasattamāḥ hrādānuhrādasaṁhrādaprahrādaścetyanukramāt

Hiranyakashipu had four sons, foremost among daityas: Hlada, Anuhlada, Samhlada, and Prahlada, in that order.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.189.12)

prahrādastatra hi mahānviṣṇubhakto jitendriyaḥ yaṁ nāśituṁ na śaktāste'bhavandaityāśca ke'pi ha

Among them, Prahlada was the great one, a devotee of Vishnu, master of his senses — and no daitya at all had the power to destroy him.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.189.13)

virocanaḥ sutastasya mahādātṛvaro'bhavat śakrāya svaśiro yo'dādyācamānāya viprataḥ

His son was Virochana, who became foremost among great givers — he who, when Shakra came begging in the guise of a brahmin, gave him his very own head.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.189.14)

tasya putro baliścāsīnmahādānī śivapriyaḥ yena vāmanarūpāya haraye'dāyi medinī

His son was Bali, a great giver of gifts, dear to Shiva — by whom the earth was given away to Hari in the form of Vamana.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.189.15)

tasyaurasaḥ suto bāṇaḥ śivabhakto babhūva ha mānyo vadānyo dhīmāṁśca satyasandhaḥ sahasradaḥ

His own son was Bana, who became a devotee of Shiva — honorable, eloquent, wise, true to his word, and a giver of a thousand gifts.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.189.16)

śoṇitākhye pure sthitvā sa rājyamakarotpurā trailokyaṁ ca balājjitvā tannāthānasureśvaraḥ

Dwelling in the city called Shonitapura, he ruled his kingdom, and, that lord of asuras, conquered the three worlds by force and became their master.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.189.17)

tasya bāṇāsurasyaiva śivabhaktasya cāmarāḥ śaṅkarasya prasādena kiṅkarā iva te'bhavan

By the grace of Shankara, the very immortals became, as it were, servants to that Banasura, the devotee of Shiva.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.189.18)

tasya rājye'marānhitvā nābhavanduḥkhitāḥ prajāḥ sāpatnyād duḥkhitāste hi paradharmapravartinaḥ

In his kingdom, apart from the immortals, his subjects were never unhappy; only the gods were made unhappy by rivalry, though they still lived under another's rule.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.189.19)

sahasrabāhuvādyena sa kadācinmahāsuraḥ tāṇḍavena hi nṛtyenātoṣayattaṁ maheśvaram

Once, that great asura, with the playing of his thousand arms and with the tandava dance, delighted Maheshvara.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.189.20)

tena nṛtyena santuṣṭaḥ suprasanno babhūva ha dadarśa kṛpayā dṛṣṭyā śaṅkaro bhaktavatsalaḥ

Pleased and greatly gratified by that dance, Shankara, ever affectionate to his devotees, looked upon him with a glance of compassion.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.189.21)

bhagavānsarvalokeśaḥ śaraṇyo bhaktakāmadaḥ vareṇa cchandayāmāsa bāleyaṁ taṁ mahāsuram

The Blessed Lord, master of all worlds, refuge of all, granter of his devotees' wishes, invited that great asura, the son of Bali, to choose a boon.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.189.22)

sanatkumāra uvāca bāleyaḥ sa mahādaityo bāṇo bhaktavaraḥ sudhīḥ praṇamya śaṅkaraṁ bhaktyā nunāva parameśvaram

Sanatkumara said: That great daitya, Bana, son of Bali, foremost of devotees and of keen intellect, bowed to Shankara and praised the Supreme Lord with devotion.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.189.23)

bāṇāsura uvāca devadeva mahādeva śaraṇāgatavatsala santuṣṭo'si maheśāna mamopari vibho yadi

Banasura said: "O god of gods, Mahadeva, ever kind to those who seek refuge — O Maheshana, all-pervading Lord, if you are truly pleased with me,"

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.189.24)

madrakṣako bhava sadā madupasthaḥ purādhipaḥ sarvathā prītikṛnme hi sasutaḥ sagaṇaḥ prabho

"then be my protector forever, dwelling close by me as lord of my city; O Lord, together with your son and your ganas, be my source of joy in every way."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.189.25)

sanatkumāra uvāca baliputraḥ sa vai bāṇo mohitaḥ śivamāyayā muktipradaṁ maheśānaṁ durārādhyamapi dhruvam

Sanatkumara said: That Bana, son of Bali, deluded by Shiva's own maya, asked this of Maheshana — the giver of liberation, though certainly hard to propitiate.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.189.26)

sa bhaktavatsalaḥ śambhurdattvā tasmai varāṁśca tān tatrovāsa tathā prītyā sagaṇaḥ sasutaḥ prabhuḥ

Shambhu, ever kind to his devotees, granted him those boons, and the Lord dwelt there with love, together with his ganas and his son.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.189.27)

sa kadācid bāṇapure cakre devāsuraiḥ saha nadītīre haraḥ krīḍāṁ ramye śoṇitakāhvaye

Once, Hara sported together with gods and asuras on the bank of the lovely river called Shonitaka, in the city of Bana.

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.189.28)

nanṛturjahasuścāpi gandharvāpsarasastathā jepuḥ praṇemurmunaya ānarcustuṣṭuvuśca tam

The gandharvas and apsarases danced and laughed; the sages murmured their japa, bowed, worshipped, and sang his praise.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.189.29)

vavalguḥ prathamāḥsarve ṛṣayo juhuvustathā āyayuḥ siddhasaṅghāśca dadṛśuḥ śāṅkarīṁ ratim

All the foremost ones leapt about, and the sages offered oblations; the hosts of siddhas came as well and beheld Shankara's delight.

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.189.30)

kutārkikā vineśuśca mlecchāśca paripanthinaḥ mātaro'bhimukhāstasthurvineśuśca bibhīṣikāḥ

Bad logicians perished, along with the hostile mlecchas; the Mother-goddesses stood facing him in homage, and every terror was destroyed.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.189.31)

rudrasadbhāvabhaktānāṁ bhavadoṣāśca niḥsṛtāḥ tasmindṛṣṭe prajāḥ sarvāḥ suprītiṁ paramāṁ yayuḥ

The faults of worldly existence departed from the sincere devotees of Rudra; and all creatures, upon seeing him, attained the highest joy.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.189.32)

vavalgurmunayaḥ siddhāḥ strīṇāṁ dṛṣṭvā viceṣṭitam pupuṣuścāpi ṛtavaḥ svaprabhāvaṁ tu tatra ca

The sages and siddhas grew stirred, seeing the movements of the women there; and even the seasons displayed their own full power at that place.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.189.33)

vavurvātāśca mṛdavaḥ puṣpake saradhūsarāḥ cukūjuḥ pakṣisaṅghāśca śākhināṁ madhulampaṭāḥ

Soft breezes blew there, grey with pollen from the flowers; and flocks of birds, greedy for the honey of the trees, warbled sweetly.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.189.34)

puṣpabhārāvanaddhānāṁ rāraṭyeraṁśca kokilāḥ madhuraṁ kāmajananaṁ vaneṣūpavaneṣu ca

Cuckoos, perched among branches heavy with blossom, cried out sweetly in the forests and groves, stirring desire.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.189.35)

tataḥ krīḍāvihāre tu matto bālenduśekharaḥ anirjitena kāmena dṛṣṭaḥ provāca nandinam

Then, intoxicated in the midst of that sport, the crescent-moon-crested Lord, overtaken by unconquered desire, spoke to Nandin.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.189.36)

candraśekhara uvāca vāmāmānaya gaurīṁ tvaṁ kailāsātkṛtamaṇḍanām śīghramasmādvanādgatvā hyuktvā'kṛṣṇāmihānaya

Chandrashekhara said: "Go quickly from this forest to Kailasa and bring here the lovely Gauri, already adorned — go, tell her, and bring the fair one here."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.189.37)

sanatkumāra uvāca sa tatheti pratijñāya gatvā tatrāha pārvatīm supraṇamya rahodūtaḥ śaṅkarasya kṛtāñjaliḥ

Sanatkumara said: Having agreed, saying "so be it," he went there and spoke to Parvati — Shankara's secret messenger, bowing low, hands joined.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.189.38)

nandīśvara uvāca draṣṭumicchati devi tvāṁ devadevo maheśvaraḥ svavallabhāṁ rūpakṛtāṁ mayoktaṁ tannideśataḥ

Nandishvara said: "O Devi, the god of gods, Maheshvara, wishes to see you, his beloved, adorned — I speak this at his own command."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.189.39)

sanatkumāra uvāca tatastadvacanādgaurī maṇḍanaṁ kartumādarāt udyatābhūnmuniśreṣṭha pativrataparāyaṇā

Sanatkumara said: Then, O best of sages, at those words Gauri, devoted wholly to her husband, made ready with reverence to adorn herself.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.189.40)

āgacchāmi prabhuṁ gaccha vada taṁ tvaṁ mamājñayā ājagāma tato nandī rudrāsannaṁ manogatiḥ

"I am coming — go and tell the Lord this at my command." Then Nandi, swift as thought, returned to where Rudra was.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.189.41)

punarāha tato rudro nandinaṁ paravibhramaḥ punargaccha tatastāta kṣipramānaya pārvatīm

Then Rudra, his mind lost in another surge of longing, spoke again to Nandin: "Go again, dear one, and bring Parvati quickly."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.189.42)

Saying "very well," he went again and spoke to the fair-eyed Gauri: "Your husband wishes to see you, lovely one, once you are dressed."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.189.43)

śaṅkaro bahudhā devi vihartuṁ sampratīkṣate evaṁ patau sukāmārte gamyatāṁ girinandini

"O Devi, Shankara waits eagerly to sport with you in many ways; your husband being thus overcome by desire, go to him, O daughter of the mountain."

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.189.44)

apsarobhiḥsamagrābhiranyonyamabhimantritam labdhabhāvo yathā sadyaḥ pārvatyā darśanotsukaḥ

Meanwhile all the apsarases whispered to one another, since Shiva, eager for the sight of Parvati, had suddenly fallen into this amorous mood.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.189.45)

ayaṁ pinākī kāmāriḥ vṛṇuyādyāṁ nitambinīm sarvāsāṁ divyanārīṇāṁ rājñī bhavati vai dhruvam

"Whichever woman this wielder of the Pinaka, the foe of Kama, should choose — she will surely become queen over all the celestial women."

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.189.46)

vīkṣaṇaṁ gauri rūpeṇa krīḍayenmanmathairgaṇaiḥ kāmo'yaṁ hanti kāmārimūcuranyo'nyamādṛtāḥ

"Fair one, one should play upon him with form and glance, aided by the troops of Manmatha — this very desire might overpower even the foe of Kama" — thus they spoke, each honoring the other.

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.189.47)

spraṣṭuṁ śaknoti yā kācidṛte dākṣāyaṇīṁ striyam sā gacchettatra niḥśaṅkaṁ mohayetpārvatīpatim

"Whichever woman, apart from the daughter of Daksha herself, is able to touch him — let her go there without hesitation and bewitch the husband of Parvati."

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.189.48)

kūṣmāṇḍatanayā tatra śaṅkaraṁ spraṣṭumutsahe ahaṁ gaurīsurūpeṇa citralekhā vaco'bravīt

"I, the daughter of Kushmanda, am eager to touch Shankara there, in the beautiful form of Gauri herself" — so spoke Chitralekha.

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.189.49)

citralekhovāca yadadhānmohinīrūpaṁ keśavo mohanecchayā purā tadvaiṣṇavaṁ yogamāśritya paramārthataḥ

Chitralekha said: "That Mohini-form which Keshava once assumed, out of the wish to bewitch, resorting truly to that Vaishnava yoga —"

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.189.50)

urvaśyāśca tato dṛṣṭvā rūpasya parivartanam kālīrūpaṁ ghṛtācī tu viśvācī cāṇḍikaṁ vapuḥ

"— seeing that transformation of form, Urvashi too changed her own; Ghritachi took the form of Kali, and Vishvachi the body of Chandika,"

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.189.51)

sāvitrirūpaṁ rambhā ca gāyatraṁ menakā tathā sahajanyā jayārūpaṁ vaijayaṁ puñjikasthalī

"Rambha took the form of Savitri, and Menaka likewise the form of Gayatri; Sahajanya the form of Jaya, and Punjikasthali the form of Vaijayanti,"

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.189.52)

mātṝṇāmapyanuktānāmanuktāścāpsarovarāḥ yatnādrūpāṇi tāścakruḥ svavidyāsaṁyutā anu

"— even the unnamed Mother-goddesses, and the unnamed foremost of the apsarases, all fashioned their forms with effort, each aided by her own magical knowledge."

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.189.53)

tatastāsāṁ tu rūpāṇi dṛṣṭvā kumbhāṇḍanandinī vaiṣṇavādātmayogācca vijñātārthā vyaḍambayat

Then, seeing all their forms, the daughter of Kumbhanda, who knew the truth through her own Vaishnava yoga, mocked them as inferior.

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.189.54)

ūṣā bāṇāsurasutā divyayogaviśāradā cakāra rūpaṁ pārvatyā divyamatyadbhutaṁ śubham

Usha, the daughter of Banasura, skilled in divine yoga, then fashioned a divine, most wondrous and auspicious form — that of Parvati herself.

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.189.55)

mahāraktābjasaṅkāśaṁ caraṇaṁ cottamaprabham divyalakṣaṇasaṁyuktaṁ mano'bhīṣṭārthadāyakam

Her feet were like great red lotuses, of surpassing radiance, marked with divine signs, granting the fulfillment of the heart's desire.

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.189.56)

tasyā ramaṇasaṅkalpaṁ vijñāya girijā tataḥ uvāca sarvavijñānā sarvāntaryāminī śivā

Perceiving Usha's intent to share in that sport, Girija — all-knowing, the indweller of all — then spoke.

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.189.57)
