Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.190.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । शृणुष्वान्यच्चरित्रं च शिवस्य परमात्मनः । भक्तवात्सल्यसङ्गर्भि परमानन्ददायकम्

sanatkumāra uvāca śṛṇuṣvānyaccaritraṁ ca śivasya paramātmanaḥ bhaktavātsalyasaṅgarbhi paramānandadāyakam

Sanatkumara said: Hear now another deed of Shiva, the Supreme Self — pregnant with love for his devotees, bestowing the highest bliss.

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.190.2)

पुरा बाणासुरो नाम दैवदोषाच्च गर्वितः । कृत्वा ताण्डवनृत्यं च तोषयामास शङ्करम्

purā bāṇāsuro nāma daivadoṣācca garvitaḥ kṛtvā tāṇḍavanṛtyaṁ ca toṣayāmāsa śaṅkaram

Long ago, Banasura, made arrogant by a fault of destiny, performed the tandava dance and pleased Shankara.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.190.3)

ज्ञात्वा सन्तुष्टमनसं पार्वतीवल्लभं शिवम् । उवाच चासुरो बाणो नतस्कन्धः कृताञ्जलिः

jñātvā santuṣṭamanasaṁ pārvatīvallabhaṁ śivam uvāca cāsuro bāṇo nataskandhaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ

Knowing Shiva, beloved of Parvati, to be pleased in mind, the asura Bana, his neck bowed, hands joined, spoke.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.190.4)

बाण उवाच । देवदेव महादेव सर्वदेवशिरोमणे । त्वत्प्रसादाद् बली चाहं शृणु मे परमं वचः

bāṇa uvāca devadeva mahādeva sarvadevaśiromaṇe tvatprasādād balī cāhaṁ śṛṇu me paramaṁ vacaḥ

Bana said: "O god of gods, Mahadeva, crest-jewel of all the gods — by your grace I am mighty; hear my supreme words."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.190.5)

दोःसहस्रं त्वया दत्तं परं भाराय मेऽभवत् । त्रिलोक्यां प्रतियोद्धारं न लभे त्वदृते समम्

doḥsahasraṁ tvayā dattaṁ paraṁ bhārāya me'bhavat trilokyāṁ pratiyoddhāraṁ na labhe tvadṛte samam

"The thousand arms you gave me have become nothing but a burden; in the three worlds I find no equal opponent to fight, save you."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.190.6)

हे देव किमनेनापि सहस्रेण करोम्यहम् । बाहूनां गिरितुल्यानां विना युद्धं वृषध्वज

he deva kimanenāpi sahasreṇa karomyaham bāhūnāṁ giritulyānāṁ vinā yuddhaṁ vṛṣadhvaja

"O god, O bull-bannered one, what use is this mountain-like host of arms to me without a war?"

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.190.7)

कण्डूत्या निभृतैर्दोर्भिर्युयुत्सुर्दिग्गजानहम् । पुराण्याचूर्णयन्नद्रीन्भीतास्तेऽपि प्रदुद्रुवुः

kaṇḍūtyā nibhṛtairdorbhiryuyutsurdiggajānaham purāṇyācūrṇayannadrīnbhītāste'pi pradudruvuḥ

"Itching for battle, eager even to fight the elephants of the quarters, I have pulverized cities and mountains with these quiet arms — and even they fled from me in fear."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.190.8)

मया यमः कृतो योद्धा वह्निश्च कृतको महान् । वरुणश्चापि गोपालो गवां पालयिता तथा

mayā yamaḥ kṛto yoddhā vahniśca kṛtako mahān varuṇaścāpi gopālo gavāṁ pālayitā tathā

"I have made Yama my mere fighter, made great Fire a tame servant, and made Varuna a cowherd, a mere keeper of cattle."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.190.9)

गजाध्यक्षः कुबेरस्तु सैरन्ध्री चापि निरृतिः । जितश्चाखण्डलो लोके करदायी सदा कृतः

gajādhyakṣaḥ kuberastu sairandhrī cāpi nirṛtiḥ jitaścākhaṇḍalo loke karadāyī sadā kṛtaḥ

"Kubera I made keeper of my elephants, Nirriti a mere maidservant; and Indra, conquered, I made ever the payer of tribute to me."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.190.10)

युद्धस्यागमनं ब्रूहि यत्रैते बाहवो मम । शत्रुहस्तप्रयुक्तैश्च शस्त्रास्त्रैर्जर्जरीकृताः

yuddhasyāgamanaṁ brūhi yatraite bāhavo mama śatruhastaprayuktaiśca śastrāstrairjarjarīkṛtāḥ

"Tell me of the coming of some war in which these arms of mine might be shattered by weapons wielded in an enemy's hand!"

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.190.11)

पतन्तु शत्रुहस्ताद्वा पातयन्तु सहस्रधा । एतन्मनोरथं मे हि पूर्णं कुरु महेश्वर

patantu śatruhastādvā pātayantu sahasradhā etanmanorathaṁ me hi pūrṇaṁ kuru maheśvara

"Let them fall by an enemy's hand, or be cut down a thousandfold — O Maheshvara, fulfill this one desire of my heart!"

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.190.12)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तच्छ्रुत्वा कुपितो रुद्रस्त्वट्टहासं महाद्भुतम् । कृत्वाऽब्रवीन्महामन्युर्भक्तबाधाऽपहारकः

sanatkumāra uvāca tacchrutvā kupito rudrastvaṭṭahāsaṁ mahādbhutam kṛtvā'bravīnmahāmanyurbhaktabādhā'pahārakaḥ

Sanatkumara said: Hearing this, Rudra grew angry and, letting out a great, wondrous burst of laughter — he of towering wrath, yet ever the remover of his devotees' afflictions — spoke.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.190.13)

रुद्र उवाच । धिग्धिक् त्वां सर्वतो गर्विन्सर्वदैत्यकुलाधम । बलिपुत्रस्य भक्तस्य नोचितं वच ईदृशम्

rudra uvāca dhigdhik tvāṁ sarvato garvinsarvadaityakulādhama baliputrasya bhaktasya nocitaṁ vaca īdṛśam

Rudra said: "Shame on you, arrogant one in every way, lowest of the whole daitya race! Such words are unbecoming a devotee, a son of Bali."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.190.14)

दर्पस्यास्य प्रशमनं लप्स्यसे चाशु दारुणम् । महायुद्धमकस्माद्वै बलिना मत्समेन हि

darpasyāsya praśamanaṁ lapsyase cāśu dāruṇam mahāyuddhamakasmādvai balinā matsamena hi

"Soon you shall obtain a terrible quelling of this pride of yours — a great war, coming without warning, with one as mighty as myself."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.190.15)

तत्र ते गिरिसङ्काशा बाहवोऽनलकाष्ठवत् । छिन्ना भूमौ पतिष्यन्ति शस्त्रास्त्रैः कदलीकृताः

tatra te girisaṅkāśā bāhavo'nalakāṣṭhavat chinnā bhūmau patiṣyanti śastrāstraiḥ kadalīkṛtāḥ

"There those mountain-like arms of yours, cut like logs by fire, sliced like plantain-trunks by weapons, shall fall to the ground."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.190.16)

यदेष मानुषशिरो मयूरसहितो ध्वजः । विद्यते तव दुष्टात्मंस्तस्य स्यात्पतनं यदा

yadeṣa mānuṣaśiro mayūrasahito dhvajaḥ vidyate tava duṣṭātmaṁstasya syātpatanaṁ yadā

"And, wicked-souled one, when this banner of yours, bearing a human head together with a peacock,"

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.190.17)

स्थापितस्यायुधागारे विना वातकृतं भयम् । तदा युद्धं महाघोरं सम्प्राप्तमिति चेतसि

sthāpitasyāyudhāgāre vinā vātakṛtaṁ bhayam tadā yuddhaṁ mahāghoraṁ samprāptamiti cetasi

"— set as it is in your armory, falls without any wind to cause it — then know in your heart that a great and terrible war has arrived."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.190.18)

निधाय घोरं सङ्ग्रामं गच्छेथाः सर्वसैन्यवान् । साम्प्रतं गच्छ तद्वेश्म यतस्तद्विद्यते शिवः

nidhāya ghoraṁ saṅgrāmaṁ gacchethāḥ sarvasainyavān sāmprataṁ gaccha tadveśma yatastadvidyate śivaḥ

"Holding that terrible battle in mind, go now, with your whole army, to that dwelling where Shiva resides."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.190.19)

तथा तान्स्वमहोत्पातांस्तत्र द्रष्टासि दुर्मते । इत्युक्त्वा विररामाथ गर्वहृद्भक्तवत्सलः

tathā tānsvamahotpātāṁstatra draṣṭāsi durmate ityuktvā virarāmātha garvahṛdbhaktavatsalaḥ

"O foolish one, there you shall see for yourself these great omens." Having spoken thus, he — crusher of pride, yet ever affectionate to his devotees — fell silent.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.190.20)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तच्छ्रुत्वा रुद्रमभ्यर्च्य दिव्यैरञ्जलिकुड्मलैः । प्रणम्य च महादेवं बाणश्च स्वगृहं गतः

sanatkumāra uvāca tacchrutvā rudramabhyarcya divyairañjalikuḍmalaiḥ praṇamya ca mahādevaṁ bāṇaśca svagṛhaṁ gataḥ

Sanatkumara said: Hearing this, Bana worshipped Rudra with hands folded like divine buds, bowed to Mahadeva, and returned to his own home.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.190.21)

कुम्भाण्डाय यथावृत्तं पृष्टः प्रोवाच हर्षितः । पर्यैक्षिष्टासुरो बाणस्तं योगं ह्युत्सुकः सदा

kumbhāṇḍāya yathāvṛttaṁ pṛṣṭaḥ provāca harṣitaḥ paryaikṣiṣṭāsuro bāṇastaṁ yogaṁ hyutsukaḥ sadā

When asked, he told Kumbhanda, delighted, all that had happened; and the asura Bana thereafter watched eagerly for that predicted occasion.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.190.22)

अथ दैवात्कदाचित्स स्वयं भग्नं ध्वजं च तम् । दृष्ट्वा तत्रासुरो बाणो हृष्टो युद्धाय निर्ययौ

atha daivātkadācitsa svayaṁ bhagnaṁ dhvajaṁ ca tam dṛṣṭvā tatrāsuro bāṇo hṛṣṭo yuddhāya niryayau

Then, by fate, one day, seeing that his banner had broken of itself, the asura Bana, delighted, set out for war.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.190.23)

स स्वसैन्यं समाहूय संयुक्तः साष्टभिर्गणैः । इष्टिं साङ्ग्रामिकां कृत्वा दृष्ट्वा साङ्ग्रामिकं मधु

sa svasainyaṁ samāhūya saṁyuktaḥ sāṣṭabhirgaṇaiḥ iṣṭiṁ sāṅgrāmikāṁ kṛtvā dṛṣṭvā sāṅgrāmikaṁ madhu

Summoning his own army, joined by his eight gana-companies, having performed the rite proper to war, and having examined the omens of war,

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.190.24)

ककुभां मङ्गलं सर्वं सम्प्रेक्ष्य प्रस्थितोऽभवत् । महोत्साहो महावीरो बलिपुत्रो महारथः

kakubhāṁ maṅgalaṁ sarvaṁ samprekṣya prasthito'bhavat mahotsāho mahāvīro baliputro mahārathaḥ

and having observed every auspicious sign of the directions, that great-souled hero, son of Bali, the great charioteer, set forth full of zeal.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.190.25)

इति हृत्कमले कृत्वा कः कस्मादागमिष्यति । योद्धा रणप्रियो यस्तु नानाशस्त्रास्त्रपारगः

iti hṛtkamale kṛtvā kaḥ kasmādāgamiṣyati yoddhā raṇapriyo yastu nānāśastrāstrapāragaḥ

Holding this thought in his heart's lotus — "Who will come, and from where, some warrior fond of battle, versed in every weapon,"

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.190.26)

यस्तु बाहुसहस्रं मे छिनत्त्वनलकाष्ठवत् । तथा शस्त्रैर्महातीक्ष्णैश्च्छिनद्मि शतशस्त्विह

yastu bāhusahasraṁ me chinattvanalakāṣṭhavat tathā śastrairmahātīkṣṇaiścchinadmi śataśastviha

"who might cut down my thousand arms as fire cuts wood, so that I might cut him down a hundredfold in return with my sharpest weapons here?"

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.190.27)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे कालः सम्प्राप्तः शङ्करेण हि । यत्र सा बाणदुहिता सुजाता कृतमङ्गला

etasminnantare kālaḥ samprāptaḥ śaṅkareṇa hi yatra sā bāṇaduhitā sujātā kṛtamaṅgalā

Meanwhile, that very time appointed by Shankara arrived, in which Bana's well-born daughter had performed her auspicious rite —

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.190.28)

माधवं माधवे मासि पूजयित्वा महानिशि । सुप्ता चान्तः पुरे गुप्ते स्त्रीभावमुपलम्भिता

mādhavaṁ mādhave māsi pūjayitvā mahāniśi suptā cāntaḥ pure gupte strībhāvamupalambhitā

having worshipped Madhava in the month of Madhava, on the great night, and, asleep within her secluded inner chamber, she came to experience the estate of a woman.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.190.29)

गौर्या सम्प्रेषितेनापि व्याकृष्टा दिव्यमायया । कृष्णात्मजात्मजेनाथ रुदन्ती सा ह्यनाथवत्

gauryā sampreṣitenāpi vyākṛṣṭā divyamāyayā kṛṣṇātmajātmajenātha rudantī sā hyanāthavat

Drawn by Gauri's own divine maya, sent for by the son of Krishna's son, she wept then like one bereft of protector.

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.190.30)

स चापि तां बलाद्भुक्त्वा पार्वत्याः सखिभिः पुनः । नीतस्तु दिव्ययोगेन द्वारकां निमिषान्तरात्

sa cāpi tāṁ balādbhuktvā pārvatyāḥ sakhibhiḥ punaḥ nītastu divyayogena dvārakāṁ nimiṣāntarāt

And he too, having enjoyed her by force, was thereupon carried back — by the divine yoga of Parvati's companion — to Dvaraka in the span of an eye's blink.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.190.31)

मृदिता सा तदोत्थाय रुदन्ती विविधा गिरः । सखीभ्यः कथयित्वा तु देहत्यागे कृतक्षणा

mṛditā sā tadotthāya rudantī vividhā giraḥ sakhībhyaḥ kathayitvā tu dehatyāge kṛtakṣaṇā

Crushed, she then rose up, weeping, and, speaking many words of grief to her friends, resolved on the spot to give up her body.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.190.32)

सख्या कृतात्मनो दोषं सा व्यास स्मारिता पुनः । सर्वं तत्पूर्ववृत्तान्तं ततो दृष्ट्वा च साऽभवत्

sakhyā kṛtātmano doṣaṁ sā vyāsa smāritā punaḥ sarvaṁ tatpūrvavṛttāntaṁ tato dṛṣṭvā ca sā'bhavat

O Vyasa, but by her friend she was reminded again of what she had thought was her own fault; and recalling the whole former history, she became composed.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.190.33)

अब्रवीच्चित्रलेखां च ततो मधुरया गिरा । ऊषा बाणस्य तनया कुम्भाण्डतनयां मुने

abravīccitralekhāṁ ca tato madhurayā girā ūṣā bāṇasya tanayā kumbhāṇḍatanayāṁ mune

O sage, then Usha, Bana's daughter, spoke in a sweet voice to Chitralekha, daughter of Kumbhanda.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.190.34)

ऊषोवाच । सखि यद्येष मे भर्ता पार्वत्या विहितः पुरा । केनोपायेन ते गुप्तः प्राप्यते विधिवन्मया

ūṣovāca sakhi yadyeṣa me bhartā pārvatyā vihitaḥ purā kenopāyena te guptaḥ prāpyate vidhivanmayā

Usha said: "Friend, if this one, ordained for me by Parvati long ago, is indeed my husband — by what means, hidden as he is, can I properly obtain him?"

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.190.35)

कस्मिन्कुले स वा जातो मम येन हृतं मनः । इत्युषावचनं श्रुत्वा सखी प्रोवाच तां तदा

kasminkule sa vā jāto mama yena hṛtaṁ manaḥ ityuṣāvacanaṁ śrutvā sakhī provāca tāṁ tadā

"In what family was he born, he who has stolen my heart?" Hearing Usha's words, her friend then spoke to her.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.190.36)

चित्रलेखोवाच । त्वया स्वप्ने च यो दृष्टः पुरुषो देवि तं कथम् । अहं समानयिष्यामि न विज्ञातस्तु यो मम

citralekhovāca tvayā svapne ca yo dṛṣṭaḥ puruṣo devi taṁ katham ahaṁ samānayiṣyāmi na vijñātastu yo mama

Chitralekha said: "O Devi, how am I to bring here this man whom you saw in a dream, when he is not even known to me?"

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.190.37)

दैत्यकन्या तदुक्ते तु रागान्धा मरणोत्सुका । रक्षिता च तया सख्या प्रथमे दिवसे ततः

daityakanyā tadukte tu rāgāndhā maraṇotsukā rakṣitā ca tayā sakhyā prathame divase tataḥ

At this, the daitya-maiden, blinded by passion, grew eager for death; but on that first day she was restrained by her friend.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.190.38)

पुनः प्रोवाच सोषां वै चित्रलेखा महामतिः । कुम्भाण्डस्य सुता बाणतनयां मुनिसत्तम

punaḥ provāca soṣāṁ vai citralekhā mahāmatiḥ kumbhāṇḍasya sutā bāṇatanayāṁ munisattama

O best of sages, then the wise Chitralekha, daughter of Kumbhanda, spoke again to that Usha, daughter of Bana.

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.190.39)

व्यसनं तेऽपकर्षामि त्रिलोक्यां यदि भाव्यते । समानेष्ये नरं यस्ते मनोहर्ता तमादिश

vyasanaṁ te'pakarṣāmi trilokyāṁ yadi bhāvyate samāneṣye naraṁ yaste manohartā tamādiśa

"I shall draw away your distress; if he exists anywhere in the three worlds, I shall bring that man who stole your heart — only point him out to me."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.190.40)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा वस्त्रपुटके देवान्दैत्यांश्च दानवान् । गन्धर्वसिद्धनागांश्च यक्षादींश्च तथालिखत्

sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā vastrapuṭake devāndaityāṁśca dānavān gandharvasiddhanāgāṁśca yakṣādīṁśca tathālikhat

Sanatkumara said: Having said this, she drew, on a small cloth, the gods, daityas, and danavas, the gandharvas, siddhas, and nagas, and the yakshas and the rest.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.190.41)

तथा नरांस्तेषु वृष्णीन् शूरमानकदुन्दुभिम् । व्यलिखद्रामकृष्णौ च प्रद्युम्नं नरसत्तमम्

tathā narāṁsteṣu vṛṣṇīn śūramānakadundubhim vyalikhadrāmakṛṣṇau ca pradyumnaṁ narasattamam

And among men she drew the Vrishnis, Shurasena and Anakadundubhi, and drew Rama and Krishna, and Pradyumna, best of men,

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.190.42)

अनिरुद्धं विलिखितं प्राद्युम्निं वीक्ष्य लज्जिता । आसीदवाङ्मुखी चोषा हृदये हर्षपूरिता

aniruddhaṁ vilikhitaṁ prādyumniṁ vīkṣya lajjitā āsīdavāṅmukhī coṣā hṛdaye harṣapūritā

and Aniruddha, son of Pradyumna. Seeing him drawn there, Usha grew bashful, her face bowed, though her heart filled with joy.

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.190.43)

ऊषा प्रोवाच चौरोऽसौ मया प्राप्तस्तु यो निशि । पुरुषः सखि येनाशु चेतोरत्नं हृतं मम

ūṣā provāca cauro'sau mayā prāptastu yo niśi puruṣaḥ sakhi yenāśu cetoratnaṁ hṛtaṁ mama

Usha said: "That, friend, is the very thief — the man I found in the night, by whom the jewel of my heart was so swiftly stolen."

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.190.44)

यस्य संस्पर्शनादेव मोहिताहं तथाभवम् । तमहं ज्ञातुमिच्छामि वद सर्वं च भामिनि

yasya saṁsparśanādeva mohitāhaṁ tathābhavam tamahaṁ jñātumicchāmi vada sarvaṁ ca bhāmini

"By his mere touch alone I became so utterly enchanted; I wish to know him — tell me everything, lovely one."

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.190.45)

कस्यायमन्वये जातो नाम किं चास्य विद्यते । इत्युक्ता साब्रवीन्नाम योगिनी तस्य चान्वयम्

kasyāyamanvaye jāto nāma kiṁ cāsya vidyate ityuktā sābravīnnāma yoginī tasya cānvayam

"In whose lineage was he born, and what is his name?" So asked, that yogini told his name and his lineage.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.190.46)

सर्वमाकर्ण्य सा तस्य कुलादि मुनिसत्तम । उत्सुका बाणतनया बभाषे सा तु कामिनी

sarvamākarṇya sā tasya kulādi munisattama utsukā bāṇatanayā babhāṣe sā tu kāminī

O best of sages, hearing all of this — his family and the rest — that love-struck daughter of Bana spoke eagerly.

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.190.47)

ऊषोवाच । उपायं रचय प्रीत्या तत्प्राप्त्यै सखि तत्क्षणात् । येनोपायेन तं कान्तं लभेयं प्राणवल्लभम्

ūṣovāca upāyaṁ racaya prītyā tatprāptyai sakhi tatkṣaṇāt yenopāyena taṁ kāntaṁ labheyaṁ prāṇavallabham

Usha said: "Friend, devise at once, with love, some means to obtain him — some means by which I might win that beloved, dearer to me than life."

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.190.48)

यं विनाहं क्षणं नैकं सखि जीवितुमुत्सहे । तमानयेह सद्यत्नात्सुखिनीं कुरु मां सखि

yaṁ vināhaṁ kṣaṇaṁ naikaṁ sakhi jīvitumutsahe tamānayeha sadyatnātsukhinīṁ kuru māṁ sakhi

"Without him, friend, I cannot bear to live even a single moment; bring him here at once, by whatever effort — make me happy, my friend."

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.190.49)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्युक्ता सा तया बाणात्मजया मन्त्रिकन्यका । विस्मिताऽभून्मुनिश्रेष्ठ सुविचारपराऽभवत्

sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktā sā tayā bāṇātmajayā mantrikanyakā vismitā'bhūnmuniśreṣṭha suvicāraparā'bhavat

Sanatkumara said: O best of sages, thus addressed by Bana's daughter, that minister's daughter was astonished and fell to careful thought.

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.190.50)

ततः सखीं समाभाष्य चित्रलेखा मनोजवा । बुद्ध्वा तं कृष्णपौत्रं सा द्वारकां गन्तुमुद्यता

tataḥ sakhīṁ samābhāṣya citralekhā manojavā buddhvā taṁ kṛṣṇapautraṁ sā dvārakāṁ gantumudyatā

Then, having spoken to her friend, Chitralekha, swift as thought, having understood that he was Krishna's grandson, made ready to go to Dvaraka.

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.190.51)

ज्येष्ठकृष्णचतुर्दश्यां तृतीये तु गतेऽहनि । आप्रभातान्मुहूर्ते तु सम्प्राप्ता द्वारकां पुरीम्

jyeṣṭhakṛṣṇacaturdaśyāṁ tṛtīye tu gate'hani āprabhātānmuhūrte tu samprāptā dvārakāṁ purīm

On the third day after the fourteenth of the dark fortnight of Jyeshtha, at the hour just before dawn, she arrived at the city of Dvaraka.

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.190.52)

एकेन क्षणमात्रेण नभसा दिव्ययोगिनी । ततश्चान्तःपुरोद्याने प्राद्युम्निर्ददृशे तया

ekena kṣaṇamātreṇa nabhasā divyayoginī tataścāntaḥpurodyāne prādyumnirdadṛśe tayā

In a single instant, that divine yogini traveled through the sky, and then, in the garden of the inner palace, she beheld Pradyumna's son —

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.190.53)

क्रीडन्नारीजनैः सार्द्धं प्रपिबन्माधवी मधु । सर्वाङ्गसुन्दरः श्यामः सुस्मितो नवयौवनः

krīḍannārījanaiḥ sārddhaṁ prapibanmādhavī madhu sarvāṅgasundaraḥ śyāmaḥ susmito navayauvanaḥ

sporting there with women, drinking the wine called Madhavi — beautiful in every limb, dark-complexioned, gently smiling, in the first bloom of youth.

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.190.54)

ततः खट्वां समारूढमन्धकारपटेन सा । आच्छादयित्वा योगेन तामसेन च माधवम्

tataḥ khaṭvāṁ samārūḍhamandhakārapaṭena sā ācchādayitvā yogena tāmasena ca mādhavam

Then, with her yogic power, she covered Madhava, who had by then mounted his couch, with a veil of darkness,

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.190.55)

ततः सा मूर्ध्नि तां खट्वां गृहीत्वा निमिषान्तरात् । सम्प्राप्ता शोणितपुरं यत्र सा बाणनन्दिनी

tataḥ sā mūrdhni tāṁ khaṭvāṁ gṛhītvā nimiṣāntarāt samprāptā śoṇitapuraṁ yatra sā bāṇanandinī

and, lifting that very couch upon her head, in the twinkling of an eye she arrived at Shonitapura, where that daughter of Bana was.

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.190.56)

कामार्ता विविधान्भावाञ्चकारोन्मत्तमानसा । आनीतमथ तं दृष्ट्वा तदा भीता च साऽभवत्

kāmārtā vividhānbhāvāñcakāronmattamānasā ānītamatha taṁ dṛṣṭvā tadā bhītā ca sā'bhavat

Tormented by desire, her mind almost frenzied, she had shown every manner of longing — but seeing him actually brought there, she suddenly grew afraid.

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.190.57)

अन्तः पुरे सुगुप्ते च नवे तस्मिन्समागमे । यावत्क्रीडितुमारब्धं तावज्ज्ञातं च तत्क्षणात्

antaḥ pure sugupte ca nave tasminsamāgame yāvatkrīḍitumārabdhaṁ tāvajjñātaṁ ca tatkṣaṇāt

There in that well-hidden inner chamber, in that fresh union — no sooner had they begun to sport than it was, at that very instant, discovered.

Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.190.58)

अन्तः पुरद्वारगतैर्वेत्रजर्जरपाणिभिः । इङ्गितैरनुमानैश्च कन्यादौःशील्यमाचरन्

antaḥ puradvāragatairvetrajarjarapāṇibhiḥ iṅgitairanumānaiśca kanyādauḥśīlyamācaran

The guards at the doors of the inner chamber, canes worn smooth in their hands, sensed through signs and inference that the maiden had done something improper.

Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.190.59)

स चापि दृष्टस्तैस्तत्र नरो दिव्यवपुर्धरः । तरुणो दर्शनीयस्तु साहसी समरप्रियः

sa cāpi dṛṣṭastaistatra naro divyavapurdharaḥ taruṇo darśanīyastu sāhasī samarapriyaḥ

And they saw there, too, that man of divine form — youthful, handsome to behold, bold, fond of battle.

Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.190.60)

तं दृष्ट्वा सर्वमाचख्युर्बाणाय बलिसूनवे । पुरुषास्ते महावीराः कन्यान्तः पुररक्षकाः

taṁ dṛṣṭvā sarvamācakhyurbāṇāya balisūnave puruṣāste mahāvīrāḥ kanyāntaḥ purarakṣakāḥ

Seeing him, those mighty men, guardians of the maiden's inner chamber, reported everything to Bana, son of Bali.

Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.190.61)

द्वारपाला ऊचुः । देव कश्चिन्न जानीते गुप्तश्चान्तःपुरे बलात् । स कोऽस्ति तव कन्यां वै स्वयङ्ग्राहादधर्षयत्

dvārapālā ūcuḥ deva kaścinna jānīte guptaścāntaḥpure balāt sa ko'sti tava kanyāṁ vai svayaṅgrāhādadharṣayat

The doorkeepers said: "O king, no one knows who this is — hidden by force within the inner chamber; who is he who, by seizing her at his own will, has violated your daughter?"

Verse 62 (shiva.rudra.190.62)

दानवेन्द्र महाबाहो पश्य पश्यैनमत्र च । यद्युक्तं स्यात्तत्कुरुष्व न दुष्टा वयमित्युत

dānavendra mahābāho paśya paśyainamatra ca yadyuktaṁ syāttatkuruṣva na duṣṭā vayamityuta

"O lord of the danavas, mighty-armed one, look, look upon him here; do whatever is fitting — we are not at fault."

Verse 63 (shiva.rudra.190.63)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दानवेन्द्रो महाबलः । विस्मितोऽभून्मुनिश्रेष्ठ कन्यायाः श्रुतदूषणः

sanatkumāra uvāca teṣāṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvā dānavendro mahābalaḥ vismito'bhūnmuniśreṣṭha kanyāyāḥ śrutadūṣaṇaḥ

Sanatkumara said: O best of sages, hearing their words, the mighty lord of the danavas was astonished at hearing of his daughter's defilement.
