The Glory of Matangeshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.5.131.1)
श्रीमहादेव उवाच। मतंगेश्वर संज्ञं तु षष्टिसंख्याकमीश्वरम्। विद्धि पापहरं देवि समीहितकरं सदा॥
śrīmahādeva uvāca| mataṁgeśvara saṁjñaṁ tu ṣaṣṭisaṁkhyākamīśvaram| viddhi pāpaharaṁ devi samīhitakaraṁ sadā||
Shri Mahadeva said: "Know, O Devi, the sixtieth lord, called Matangeshvara, ever the remover of sin and the fulfiller of desires."
Verse 2 (skanda.5.131.2)
सुगतिर्नाम विप्रेन्द्रो बभूव द्वापरे युगे। सत्यवादी सदा दांतो वेदाध्ययनतत्परः॥
sugatirnāma viprendro babhūva dvāpare yuge| satyavādī sadā dāṁto vedādhyayanatatparaḥ||
"In the Dvapara age there was a foremost brahmin named Sugati, truthful, ever self-controlled, devoted to the study of the Vedas."
Verse 3 (skanda.5.131.3)
मतंगस्तस्य पुत्रोऽभूद्बाल्याद्दारुणतां गतः। सबालं गर्दभं देवि तिष्ठन्तं मातुरंतिके। दण्डकाष्ठेन सहसा ताडयामास चापलात्॥
mataṁgastasya putro'bhūdbālyāddāruṇatāṁ gataḥ| sabālaṁ gardabhaṁ devi tiṣṭhantaṁ māturaṁtike| daṇḍakāṣṭhena sahasā tāḍayāmāsa cāpalāt||
"Matanga was his son, cruel-natured from childhood; O Devi, seeing a baby donkey standing beside its mother, he struck it suddenly with a wooden stick, out of mere caprice."
Verse 4 (skanda.5.131.4)
तं तु तीव्राहतं दृष्ट्वा गर्दभी पुत्रगृद्धिनी। उवाच मा शुचः पुत्र चंडालोऽयं न वै द्विजः॥
taṁ tu tīvrāhataṁ dṛṣṭvā gardabhī putragṛddhinī| uvāca mā śucaḥ putra caṁḍālo'yaṁ na vai dvijaḥ||
"Seeing him struck severely, the she-donkey, doting on her child, said: 'Do not grieve, my child - this one is a chandala, not truly a brahmin."
Verse 5 (skanda.5.131.5)
ब्राह्मणे दारुणं नास्ति मैत्रो ब्राह्मण उच्यते। तुदन्पापाकृतिरयं बाले न कुरुते दयाम्॥
brāhmaṇe dāruṇaṁ nāsti maitro brāhmaṇa ucyate| tudanpāpākṛtirayaṁ bāle na kurute dayām||
"'There is no cruelty in a true brahmin - a brahmin is called one who is friendly. This one, of sinful nature, who torments and shows no mercy to a child -"
Verse 6 (skanda.5.131.6)
स्वकीयां भजते चाथ प्रकृतिं मानवः सदा। एतच्छ्रुत्वा मतंगस्तु दारुणं गर्द्दभीवचः॥
svakīyāṁ bhajate cātha prakṛtiṁ mānavaḥ sadā| etacchrutvā mataṁgastu dāruṇaṁ garddabhīvacaḥ||
"- a man ever follows his own true nature.' Hearing this harsh speech of the she-donkey, Matanga -"
Verse 7 (skanda.5.131.7)
दंडकाष्ठं परित्यज्य रासभीं प्रत्यभाषत। ब्रूहि रासभि कल्याणि माता मे येन दूषिता॥
daṁḍakāṣṭhaṁ parityajya rāsabhīṁ pratyabhāṣata| brūhi rāsabhi kalyāṇi mātā me yena dūṣitā||
"- cast aside his wooden stick and spoke to the she-donkey: 'Tell me, gracious donkey, by whom was my mother defiled?"
Verse 8 (skanda.5.131.8)
कथं मां वेत्सि चंडालं यायावरकुलोद्भवम्। केन जातोस्मि चंडालो ब्राह्मण्यं येन मे गतम्॥
kathaṁ māṁ vetsi caṁḍālaṁ yāyāvarakulodbhavam| kena jātosmi caṁḍālo brāhmaṇyaṁ yena me gatam||
"'How do you know me to be a chandala, though born of a wandering Vedic-student's lineage? By whom was I born a chandala, by whom has my brahminhood been lost?'"
Verse 9 (skanda.5.131.9)
गर्दभ्युवाच। नापितेन प्रमत्तेन ब्राह्मण्यां वृषलेन हि। ततस्त्वमसि चांडालो ब्राह्मण्यं तेन ते गतम्॥
gardabhyuvāca| nāpitena pramattena brāhmaṇyāṁ vṛṣalena hi| tatastvamasi cāṁḍālo brāhmaṇyaṁ tena te gatam||
"The she-donkey said: 'By a careless barber, a shudra, in union with your brahmin mother; hence you are a chandala, and by that your brahminhood has been lost.'"
Verse 10 (skanda.5.131.10)
एवमुक्तो मतंगस्तु पितरं वाक्यमब्रवीत्। ताताश्चर्यं श्रुतं मेऽद्य जातोऽहं नापितेन वै॥
evamukto mataṁgastu pitaraṁ vākyamabravīt| tātāścaryaṁ śrutaṁ me'dya jāto'haṁ nāpitena vai||
"Thus told, Matanga spoke to his father: 'Father, a wonder have I heard today - that I was born of a barber indeed."
Verse 11 (skanda.5.131.11)
गर्दभ्या कथितं सम्यक्तस्मात्तप्स्ये महत्तपः। एवमुक्त्वा स पितरं प्रतस्थे कृतनिश्चयः॥
gardabhyā kathitaṁ samyaktasmāttapsye mahattapaḥ| evamuktvā sa pitaraṁ pratasthe kṛtaniścayaḥ||
"'This the she-donkey has truly told me; therefore I shall perform great austerity.' Having said this to his father, he set out, his resolve made firm."
Verse 12 (skanda.5.131.12)
स गत्वा च ततोऽरण्यमतप्यत महत्तपः। ततः संतापयामास विबुधांस्तपसान्वितः॥
sa gatvā ca tato'raṇyamatapyata mahattapaḥ| tataḥ saṁtāpayāmāsa vibudhāṁstapasānvitaḥ||
"Going then to the forest, he performed great austerity; by his austerity he tormented the gods."
Verse 13 (skanda.5.131.13)
तं तथा तपसा युक्तमुवाच हरिवाहनः। मतंग तप्यसे किं त्वं भोगानुत्सृज्य मानुषान्। वरं ददामि तेऽहं तं वृणीष्व त्वं यदिच्छसि॥
taṁ tathā tapasā yuktamuvāca harivāhanaḥ| mataṁga tapyase kiṁ tvaṁ bhogānutsṛjya mānuṣān| varaṁ dadāmi te'haṁ taṁ vṛṇīṣva tvaṁ yadicchasi||
"To him, thus engaged in austerity, the one whose vehicle are the tawny horses said: 'Matanga, why do you perform austerity, forsaking human pleasures? I grant you a boon - choose whatever you desire.'"
Verse 14 (skanda.5.131.14)
मतङ्ग उवाच। ब्राह्मण्यं कामयानोऽहमिदमारब्धवांस्तपः। देहि मे शाश्वतं शक्र वर एष वृतो मया॥
mataṅga uvāca| brāhmaṇyaṁ kāmayāno'hamidamārabdhavāṁstapaḥ| dehi me śāśvataṁ śakra vara eṣa vṛto mayā||
Matanga said: "Desiring brahminhood, I have undertaken this austerity; grant it to me forever, O Shakra - this is the boon I have chosen."
Verse 15 (skanda.5.131.15)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं तमुवाच पुरंदरः। ब्राह्मण्यं याचसे त्वं हि दुष्प्रापमकृतात्मभिः॥
etacchrutvā tu vacanaṁ tamuvāca puraṁdaraḥ| brāhmaṇyaṁ yācase tvaṁ hi duṣprāpamakṛtātmabhiḥ||
"Hearing these words, Purandara said to him: 'You ask for brahminhood, which is indeed hard to attain for those of unperfected self."
Verse 16 (skanda.5.131.16)
नाशमेष्यसि दुर्बुद्धे तदुपारम मा चिरम्। चंडालयोनौ जातेन न तत्प्राप्यं कथंचन॥
nāśameṣyasi durbuddhe tadupārama mā ciram| caṁḍālayonau jātena na tatprāpyaṁ kathaṁcana||
"'You shall come to ruin, O foolish one; cease from this, delay no longer. One born in a chandala womb can by no means attain that.'"
Verse 17 (skanda.5.131.17)
एवमुक्तो मतंगस्तु संशितात्मा यत व्रतः। अतिष्ठदेकपादेन वर्षाणां शतसंख्यया॥
evamukto mataṁgastu saṁśitātmā yata vrataḥ| atiṣṭhadekapādena varṣāṇāṁ śatasaṁkhyayā||
"Thus addressed, Matanga, his self made resolute, restrained in his vow, stood on one foot for a hundred years."
Verse 18 (skanda.5.131.18)
तमुवाच ततः शक्रः पुनरेव महायशाः। ब्राह्मण्यं दुर्लभं वीर मा कृथाः साहसं वृथा॥
tamuvāca tataḥ śakraḥ punareva mahāyaśāḥ| brāhmaṇyaṁ durlabhaṁ vīra mā kṛthāḥ sāhasaṁ vṛthā||
"Then Shakra of great fame spoke to him again: 'Brahminhood is hard to attain, O hero; do not make this useless effort in vain."
Verse 19 (skanda.5.131.19)
न हि शक्यं प्राप्तुमेवमचिरान्नाशमेष्यसि। वृणु वा काममन्यं त्वं ब्राह्मणत्वं सुदुर्लभम्॥
na hi śakyaṁ prāptumevamacirānnāśameṣyasi| vṛṇu vā kāmamanyaṁ tvaṁ brāhmaṇatvaṁ sudurlabham||
"'It cannot be attained this way; you will soon come to ruin. Choose instead some other desire - brahminhood is exceedingly hard to attain.'"
Verse 20 (skanda.5.131.20)
एवमुक्तो मतंगस्तु संशितात्मा दृढव्रतः। सहस्रमेकं पादेन ततोऽब्दानामवर्त्तत॥
evamukto mataṁgastu saṁśitātmā dṛḍhavrataḥ| sahasramekaṁ pādena tato'bdānāmavarttata||
"Thus addressed, Matanga, his self resolute, firm in his vow, then continued for a full thousand years standing on one foot."
Verse 21 (skanda.5.131.21)
तदेव च पुनर्वाक्यमुवाच बलवृत्रहा। चंडालायौनौ जातेन नावाप्यं ते कथंचन॥
tadeva ca punarvākyamuvāca balavṛtrahā| caṁḍālāyaunau jātena nāvāpyaṁ te kathaṁcana||
"Again the slayer of Bala and Vritra spoke that very same word: 'One born in a chandala womb cannot by any means obtain that."
Verse 22 (skanda.5.131.22)
अन्यं वरं वृणीष्व त्वं मा कृथास्तत्स्वयं श्रमम्। एवमुक्तो मतंगस्तु भृशं शोकपरायणः॥
anyaṁ varaṁ vṛṇīṣva tvaṁ mā kṛthāstatsvayaṁ śramam| evamukto mataṁgastu bhṛśaṁ śokaparāyaṇaḥ||
"'Choose another boon; do not put yourself to this labor.' Thus addressed, Matanga, given over to intense grief -"
Verse 23 (skanda.5.131.23)
अतिष्ठत गयां गत्वा सोंगुष्ठेन शतं समाः। सुदुष्करं वहन्योगं प्राणायामपरायणः॥
atiṣṭhata gayāṁ gatvā soṁguṣṭhena śataṁ samāḥ| suduṣkaraṁ vahanyogaṁ prāṇāyāmaparāyaṇaḥ||
"- went to Gaya and stood upon his big toe for a hundred years, bearing a most difficult discipline, devoted to the regulation of breath."
Verse 24 (skanda.5.131.24)
त्वगस्थिभूतो धर्मात्मा तताप परमं तपः। तपंतं तमभिद्रुत्य परिजग्राह वासवः॥
tvagasthibhūto dharmātmā tatāpa paramaṁ tapaḥ| tapaṁtaṁ tamabhidrutya parijagrāha vāsavaḥ||
"Reduced to mere skin and bone, that righteous soul performed supreme austerity; Vasava rushed to him as he performed austerity and took hold of him -"
Verse 25 (skanda.5.131.25)
वराणामीश्वरो दाता सर्वभूतहिते रतः॥
varāṇāmīśvaro dātā sarvabhūtahite rataḥ||
"- he, the lord and giver of boons, devoted to the welfare of all beings."
Verse 26 (skanda.5.131.26)
शक्र उवाच। मतंग ब्राह्मणत्वं हि विरुद्धमिह दृश्यते। ब्राह्मण्यं दुर्ल्लभं तात ह्यसतां पापशीलिनाम्॥
śakra uvāca| mataṁga brāhmaṇatvaṁ hi viruddhamiha dṛśyate| brāhmaṇyaṁ durllabhaṁ tāta hyasatāṁ pāpaśīlinām||
Shakra said: "Matanga, brahminhood indeed appears contrary to your nature here; brahminhood is hard to attain, my child, for the impure, sinful in nature."
Verse 27 (skanda.5.131.27)
ब्राह्मणे सर्वभूतानां योगक्षेमः समाहितः। तदुत्सृज्येह दुष्प्राप्यं ब्राह्मण्यमकृतात्मभिः॥
brāhmaṇe sarvabhūtānāṁ yogakṣemaḥ samāhitaḥ| tadutsṛjyeha duṣprāpyaṁ brāhmaṇyamakṛtātmabhiḥ||
"'In a brahmin rests the welfare of all beings; therefore give up this brahminhood, hard to attain for those of unformed self."
Verse 28 (skanda.5.131.28)
अन्यं वरं वृणीष्व त्वं दुर्लभोऽयं हि ते वरः॥
anyaṁ varaṁ vṛṇīṣva tvaṁ durlabho'yaṁ hi te varaḥ||
"'Choose another boon - this boon is indeed hard for you to attain.'"
Verse 29 (skanda.5.131.29)
मतंग उवाच। किं मां तुदसि दुःखार्तं मृतं मारयसे च माम्। तं तु शोचामि यो लब्ध्वा ब्राह्मण्यं नानुपालयेत्॥
mataṁga uvāca| kiṁ māṁ tudasi duḥkhārtaṁ mṛtaṁ mārayase ca mām| taṁ tu śocāmi yo labdhvā brāhmaṇyaṁ nānupālayet||
Matanga said: "Why do you torment me, already afflicted with sorrow, and slay me though I am as good as dead? I grieve rather for one who, having obtained brahminhood, fails to preserve it."
Verse 30 (skanda.5.131.30)
ब्राह्मण्यं यदि दुष्प्राप्यं त्रिभिर्वर्णैः शतक्रतो। तपसा च कथं लब्धं विश्वामित्रेण भूभुजा॥
brāhmaṇyaṁ yadi duṣprāpyaṁ tribhirvarṇaiḥ śatakrato| tapasā ca kathaṁ labdhaṁ viśvāmitreṇa bhūbhujā||
"'If brahminhood is hard to attain by the three other varnas, O Shatakratu, then how was it attained through austerity by King Vishvamitra?"
Verse 31 (skanda.5.131.31)
वीतहव्यश्च राजर्षिस्तपसा विप्रतां गतः। तस्मात्तपः करिष्यामि निर्द्वंद्वो निष्परिग्रहः॥
vītahavyaśca rājarṣistapasā vipratāṁ gataḥ| tasmāttapaḥ kariṣyāmi nirdvaṁdvo niṣparigrahaḥ||
"'And the royal sage Vitahavya attained brahminhood through austerity. Therefore I shall perform austerity, free from dualities, without possessions."
Verse 32 (skanda.5.131.32)
अहिंसादमसत्यस्थः कथं नार्हामि विप्रताम्। दैवेन कृतमेतद्धि यद्यहं मातृदोषतः॥
ahiṁsādamasatyasthaḥ kathaṁ nārhāmi vipratām| daivena kṛtametaddhi yadyahaṁ mātṛdoṣataḥ||
"'Abiding in non-violence, self-control and truth, why should I not deserve brahminhood? If it is because of my mother's fault, this indeed is the doing of fate."
Verse 33 (skanda.5.131.33)
एतामवस्थां संप्राप्तो दैवयोगात्पुरंदर। नूनं दैवं न शक्यं तु पौरुषेण निवर्त्तितुम्॥
etāmavasthāṁ saṁprāpto daivayogātpuraṁdara| nūnaṁ daivaṁ na śakyaṁ tu pauruṣeṇa nivarttitum||
"'I have come to this condition by the working of fate, O Purandara; surely fate cannot be turned back by human effort."
Verse 34 (skanda.5.131.34)
यदहं यत्नवानेवं न लभे विप्रतां विभो। एवं ज्ञात्वा तु देवेश दातुमर्हसि मे परम्॥
yadahaṁ yatnavānevaṁ na labhe vipratāṁ vibho| evaṁ jñātvā tu deveśa dātumarhasi me param||
"'Since I, though thus striving, do not obtain brahminhood, O mighty one, knowing this, O lord of gods, you ought to grant me that supreme thing."
Verse 35 (skanda.5.131.35)
यदि तेऽहमनुग्राह्यः किंचिद्वा सुकृतं मम। तदुपायं हि मे शंस कथं विप्रो भवामि वै॥
yadi te'hamanugrāhyaḥ kiṁcidvā sukṛtaṁ mama| tadupāyaṁ hi me śaṁsa kathaṁ vipro bhavāmi vai||
"'If I am worthy of your grace, or if I have any merit at all, then tell me the means by which I may truly become a brahmin."
Verse 36 (skanda.5.131.36)
यथा ममाक्षया कीत्तिर्भवेद्वापि पुरंदर। कर्तुमर्हसि तद्देव शिरसा त्वां प्रसादये॥
yathā mamākṣayā kīttirbhavedvāpi puraṁdara| kartumarhasi taddeva śirasā tvāṁ prasādaye||
"'Grant me too, O Purandara, that my fame may become imperishable; you ought to do this, O god - I entreat you with bowed head.'"
Verse 37 (skanda.5.131.37)
इत्युक्तो हि मतंगेन वासवो बलवृत्रहा। कथयामास संतुष्टो लिंगमाहात्म्यमुत्तमम्॥
ityukto hi mataṁgena vāsavo balavṛtrahā| kathayāmāsa saṁtuṣṭo liṁgamāhātmyamuttamam||
"Thus addressed by Matanga, Vasava, the slayer of Bala and Vritra, pleased, told him the supreme glory of the linga -"
Verse 38 (skanda.5.131.38)
इन्द्र उवाच। महाकालवने लिंगं स्थापितं ब्रह्मणा पुरा। दिव्यमूर्त्तिधरं दिव्यं श्रीसिद्धेश्वरपूर्वतः॥
indra uvāca| mahākālavane liṁgaṁ sthāpitaṁ brahmaṇā purā| divyamūrttidharaṁ divyaṁ śrīsiddheśvarapūrvataḥ||
Indra said: "In Mahakalavana a linga was established of old by Brahma, bearing a divine form, divine indeed, to the east of Shri Siddheshvara."
Verse 39 (skanda.5.131.39)
तस्य दर्शनमात्रेण विप्रत्वं समवाप्स्यसि। वासवस्य च वाक्येन मतंगो गतवांस्तदा॥
tasya darśanamātreṇa vipratvaṁ samavāpsyasi| vāsavasya ca vākyena mataṁgo gatavāṁstadā||
"'By the mere sight of it you shall attain brahminhood.' At the word of Vasava, Matanga then went there."
Verse 40 (skanda.5.131.40)
महाकालवनं रम्यं सिद्धक्षेत्रमथापरम्। ददर्श तत्र तल्लिंगमशेषफलदायकम्॥
mahākālavanaṁ ramyaṁ siddhakṣetramathāparam| dadarśa tatra talliṁgamaśeṣaphaladāyakam||
"He came to the delightful Mahakalavana, that other siddha-kshetra; there he beheld that linga, giver of every fruit."
Verse 41 (skanda.5.131.41)
दृष्ट्वा संपूजयामास पुष्पैर्नानाविधैस्तथा। पूजितः प्रत्युवाचेदं मतंगं देवसत्तमः॥
dṛṣṭvā saṁpūjayāmāsa puṣpairnānāvidhaistathā| pūjitaḥ pratyuvācedaṁ mataṁgaṁ devasattamaḥ||
"Beholding it, he worshipped it well with flowers of many kinds; being worshipped, the best of gods replied to Matanga:"
Verse 42 (skanda.5.131.42)
अहो महान्सभाग्योसि यस्त्वया तोषितोऽस्म्यहम्। मत्तः सर्वं समुद्भूतं ब्रह्मांडं भूर्भुवादिकम्॥
aho mahānsabhāgyosi yastvayā toṣito'smyaham| mattaḥ sarvaṁ samudbhūtaṁ brahmāṁḍaṁ bhūrbhuvādikam||
"'Ah, how greatly fortunate you are, in that you have delighted me! From me has all this arisen - the cosmic egg, the earth, and the worlds beyond."
Verse 43 (skanda.5.131.43)
वरदोऽस्मि वरार्हाणां शापदोऽस्मि दुरात्मनाम। ब्राह्मण्यं मत्प्रसादाच्च अक्षयं ते भविष्यति॥
varado'smi varārhāṇāṁ śāpado'smi durātmanāma| brāhmaṇyaṁ matprasādācca akṣayaṁ te bhaviṣyati||
"'I am the giver of boons to those worthy of boons, and the giver of curses to the wicked-souled; by my grace, brahminhood shall be imperishably yours.'"
Verse 44 (skanda.5.131.44)
ततोऽसौ विप्रतां यातो मतंगो लिंगदर्शनात। पुनः पूजाप्रभावेण ब्रह्मलोकं गतो द्विज॥
tato'sau vipratāṁ yāto mataṁgo liṁgadarśanāta| punaḥ pūjāprabhāveṇa brahmalokaṁ gato dvija||
"Then Matanga attained brahminhood through the sight of that linga; and again, by the power of his worship, O brahmin, he went to the world of Brahma."
Verse 45 (skanda.5.131.45)
ब्राह्मण्यं दुर्लभं लब्धं लिंगस्यास्य प्रभावतः। मतंगेन वरारोहे तस्माद्देवो विगीयते॥
brāhmaṇyaṁ durlabhaṁ labdhaṁ liṁgasyāsya prabhāvataḥ| mataṁgena varārohe tasmāddevo vigīyate||
"Hard-to-attain brahminhood was obtained by Matanga through the power of this linga, O fair one; therefore the god is celebrated -"
Verse 46 (skanda.5.131.46)
मतंगेश्वरको लोके ब्रह्मलोकप्रदायकः। वर्णाश्रमेषु विद्विष्टाः पाषंडवचने रताः॥
mataṁgeśvarako loke brahmalokapradāyakaḥ| varṇāśrameṣu vidviṣṭāḥ pāṣaṁḍavacane ratāḥ||
"- as Matangeshvara in the world, the bestower of the world of Brahma. Even those who hate the varnas and ashramas, who delight in heretical speech -"

निर्मर्यादा निराचारा निःशंकाश्चातिलोलुपाः। निर्घृणाः क्रूरर्माणो धृष्टाः कलियुगे नराः। दर्शनात्तस्य लिंगस्य तेऽपि यांति त्रिविष्टपम्॥
nirmaryādā nirācārā niḥśaṁkāścātilolupāḥ| nirghṛṇāḥ krūrarmāṇo dhṛṣṭāḥ kaliyuge narāḥ| darśanāttasya liṁgasya te'pi yāṁti triviṣṭapam||
"- men without restraint, without proper conduct, unabashed and exceedingly greedy, merciless, cruel in their deeds, insolent, such men of the Kali age - even they, by the sight of that linga, go to heaven."
Verse 48 (skanda.5.131.48)
ये विशुद्धा महाभागा ध्यानिनो मुक्तिभागिनः। ते पश्यंति कलौ देवि मतंगेश्वरमीश्वरम्॥
ye viśuddhā mahābhāgā dhyānino muktibhāginaḥ| te paśyaṁti kalau devi mataṁgeśvaramīśvaram||
"Those who are pure, greatly fortunate, given to meditation, sharers in liberation - they, O Devi, behold the lord Matangeshvara in the Kali age."

ब्रह्मध्यानपरा ये च यज्ञदानक्रियारताः। ते पश्यंति कलौ देवि मतंगेश्वरमीश्वरम्॥
brahmadhyānaparā ye ca yajñadānakriyāratāḥ| te paśyaṁti kalau devi mataṁgeśvaramīśvaram||
"Those who are devoted to meditation on Brahman, and delight in the acts of sacrifice and charity - they, O Devi, behold the lord Matangeshvara in the Kali age."
Verse 50 (skanda.5.131.50)
येऽर्चयंति महा देवि मतंगेश्वरमीश्वरम। कृतपुण्या नरा मर्त्त्ये तेषां वासोऽक्षयो दिवि॥
ye'rcayaṁti mahā devi mataṁgeśvaramīśvarama| kṛtapuṇyā narā marttye teṣāṁ vāso'kṣayo divi||
"Those men, O great Devi, who worship the lord Matangeshvara, having accumulated merit in the mortal world, dwell imperishably in heaven."
Verse 51 (skanda.5.131.51)
एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः। मतंगेश्वरदेवस्य शृणु सौभाग्यमीश्वरम्॥
eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ| mataṁgeśvaradevasya śṛṇu saubhāgyamīśvaram||
"This, O Devi, is the sin-destroying power of the god Matangeshvara that I have told you; now hear of Saubhagyeshvara."
