Verse 1 (skanda.5.132.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। एकषष्टितमं विद्धि सौभाग्येश्वरमीश्वरम्। यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण सौभाग्य मतुलं लभेत्॥

īśvara uvāca| ekaṣaṣṭitamaṁ viddhi saubhāgyeśvaramīśvaram| yasya darśanamātreṇa saubhāgya matulaṁ labhet||

Ishvara said: "Know, O Devi, the sixty-first lord, Ishvara Saubhagyeshvara — by the mere sight of whom one obtains incomparable good fortune."

Verse 2 (skanda.5.132.2)

प्रधमं प्राकृते कल्पे राजाभूदश्ववाहनः। प्राग्ज्योतिषपुरे रम्ये धर्मात्मा कीर्त्तिवर्द्धनः॥

pradhamaṁ prākṛte kalpe rājābhūdaśvavāhanaḥ| prāgjyotiṣapure ramye dharmātmā kīrttivarddhanaḥ||

"In the first, the Prakrita kalpa, there was a king named Ashvavahana, righteous, ever increasing his fame, in the lovely city of Pragjyotisha."

Verse 3 (skanda.5.132.3)

अनेकयज्ञकृत्प्राज्ञः संग्रामेष्वप राजितः। तस्य भार्या विशालाक्षि नाम्ना मदनमञ्जरी॥

anekayajñakṛtprājñaḥ saṁgrāmeṣvapa rājitaḥ| tasya bhāryā viśālākṣi nāmnā madanamañjarī||

"Wise, the performer of many sacrifices, unconquered in battles; his wife, O wide-eyed one, was named Madanamanjari."

Verse 4 (skanda.5.132.4)

काशिराजसुता सुभ्रू रूपेणातीव शोभना। दक्षा सुशीला धर्मिष्ठा गृहव्यापारको विदा॥

kāśirājasutā subhrū rūpeṇātīva śobhanā| dakṣā suśīlā dharmiṣṭhā gṛhavyāpārako vidā||

"She was the daughter of the king of Kashi, fair-browed, exceedingly lovely in form; skilled, of good conduct, devoted to dharma, and well versed in household affairs."

Verse 5 (skanda.5.132.5)

चतुःषष्टिकलायुक्ता सदा भर्तृहिते रता। पूर्णेन्दुवदना सौम्या सदा मधुरभाषिणी॥

catuḥṣaṣṭikalāyuktā sadā bhartṛhite ratā| pūrṇenduvadanā saumyā sadā madhurabhāṣiṇī||

"Endowed with the sixty-four arts, ever devoted to her husband's welfare; her face like the full moon, gentle, and ever sweet of speech."

Verse 6 (skanda.5.132.6)

पूर्वकर्मवशाद्देवि दुर्भूगा समजायत। सा नेष्टा तस्य नृपतेर्नेत्रोद्वेगकरी सदा॥

pūrvakarmavaśāddevi durbhūgā samajāyata| sā neṣṭā tasya nṛpaternetrodvegakarī sadā||

"Yet, O Devi, through the power of past deeds she became unfortunate; she was not pleasing to that king, ever a cause of distress to his eyes."

Verse 7 (skanda.5.132.7)

श्रोत्रोद्वेगकरं वाक्यं तस्य राज्ञः करोति सा। ददाह लोचने राजस्तस्याः संदर्शनं सदा॥

śrotrodvegakaraṁ vākyaṁ tasya rājñaḥ karoti sā| dadāha locane rājastasyāḥ saṁdarśanaṁ sadā||

"Her speech ever vexed the king's ears; the sight of her always seemed to sear his eyes."

Verse 8 (skanda.5.132.8)

मृर्छां प्राप्नोत्यसह्यां स तस्याः स्पर्शेन भूपतिः। कदा चालोकितो राजा तया प्रेम्णा वरानने। दह्यमानोऽतितीव्रेण वह्निना वाक्यमब्रवीत्॥

mṛrchāṁ prāpnotyasahyāṁ sa tasyāḥ sparśena bhūpatiḥ| kadā cālokito rājā tayā premṇā varānane| dahyamāno'titīvreṇa vahninā vākyamabravīt||

"The king would fall into an unbearable swoon at her mere touch. Once, O fair one, when the king was gazed upon by her with love, burning as if by a most intense fire, he spoke these words:"

Verse 9 (skanda.5.132.9)

द्वास्थैतां दुर्भगां भार्यामादाय विपिने वने। परित्यजाशु नैतत्ते विचार्यं वचनं मम॥

dvāsthaitāṁ durbhagāṁ bhāryāmādāya vipine vane| parityajāśu naitatte vicāryaṁ vacanaṁ mama||

"'O door-keeper, take this unfortunate wife and abandon her at once in the dense forest; this word of mine is not to be questioned.'"

Verse 10 (skanda.5.132.10)

ततो नृपस्य वचनमविचार्यमवेक्ष्य सः। द्वास्थस्तत्याज तां सुभ्रूमारोप्य स्यंदनं वने॥

tato nṛpasya vacanamavicāryamavekṣya saḥ| dvāsthastatyāja tāṁ subhrūmāropya syaṁdanaṁ vane||

"Then, seeing the king's word was not to be questioned, that door-keeper, placing the fair-browed queen upon a chariot, abandoned her in the forest."

Verse 11 (skanda.5.132.11)

सा च त्यक्ता वने शून्ये रुदती च मुहुर्मुहुः। सस्मार तं महीपालं तममन्यत दैवतम्॥

sā ca tyaktā vane śūnye rudatī ca muhurmuhuḥ| sasmāra taṁ mahīpālaṁ tamamanyata daivatam||

"Abandoned in the desolate forest, weeping again and again, she remembered that king and regarded him as her very deity."

Verse 12 (skanda.5.132.12)

अथ सा चारुसर्वांगी तत्रासक्तात्ममानसा। निश्वासपरमा निन्ये दिनशेषं तथा निशाम्॥

atha sā cārusarvāṁgī tatrāsaktātmamānasā| niśvāsaparamā ninye dinaśeṣaṁ tathā niśām||

"Then she, lovely in every limb, her mind attached wholly to him, spent the rest of the day and the night sighing constantly."

Verse 13 (skanda.5.132.13)

निश्वसन्त्यनवद्यांगी हाहेति रुदती मुहुः। मन्दभाग्येति चात्मानं निनिन्द मदिरेक्षणा॥

niśvasantyanavadyāṁgī hāheti rudatī muhuḥ| mandabhāgyeti cātmānaṁ nininda madirekṣaṇā||

"Sighing, her form flawless, weeping again and again and crying 'Alas, alas!', that doe-eyed one reproached herself as ill-fated."

Verse 14 (skanda.5.132.14)

न विहारे न चाहारे रमणीये न तद्वने। न कन्दरेषु शैलानां सा बबन्ध तदा रतिम्। त्यक्ता तेन वरारोहे निनिन्द निजयौवनम्॥

na vihāre na cāhāre ramaṇīye na tadvane| na kandareṣu śailānāṁ sā babandha tadā ratim| tyaktā tena varārohe nininda nijayauvanam||

"Neither in pleasure-groves, nor in food, nor in that lovely forest, nor in the mountain caves did she then fix her delight; abandoned by him, O fair-hipped one, she reproached her own youth."

Verse 15 (skanda.5.132.15)

दुर्भगाहं क्व जातात्र दुष्टदैववशीकृता। कथं प्राप्तः स मे भर्त्ता तादृशो नृपस त्तमः॥

durbhagāhaṁ kva jātātra duṣṭadaivavaśīkṛtā| kathaṁ prāptaḥ sa me bharttā tādṛśo nṛpasa ttamaḥ||

"She said: 'Where was I, ill-fated, born into this, ruled over by evil fate? How did I obtain such a husband, that best of kings?'"

Verse 16 (skanda.5.132.16)

धन्योऽयमतिपुण्योऽयं योऽयं यौवनगोचरः। अन्यासामसतीनां च रमिष्यति न संशयः॥

dhanyo'yamatipuṇyo'yaṁ yo'yaṁ yauvanagocaraḥ| anyāsāmasatīnāṁ ca ramiṣyati na saṁśayaḥ||

"'Blessed and most meritorious indeed is that youthfulness of his — with other, unchaste women he will surely take his pleasure, no doubt.'"

Verse 17 (skanda.5.132.17)

अभीष्टा कस्यचित्कांता कांतः कस्याश्चिदीप्सितः। परस्परानुरागाढयं दांपत्यमतिदुर्लभम्॥

abhīṣṭā kasyacitkāṁtā kāṁtaḥ kasyāścidīpsitaḥ| parasparānurāgāḍhayaṁ dāṁpatyamatidurlabham||

"'A beloved is desired by someone, a lover longed for by some woman; a marriage rich in mutual love is exceedingly rare.'"

Verse 18 (skanda.5.132.18)

ममायं वल्लभो राजा न चाहं नृपवल्लभा। परस्परानुरागो हि धन्यानामेव जायते॥

mamāyaṁ vallabho rājā na cāhaṁ nṛpavallabhā| parasparānurāgo hi dhanyānāmeva jāyate||

"'This king is dear to me, but I am not dear to the king; for mutual love arises only for the fortunate.'"

Verse 19 (skanda.5.132.19)

यद्यद्य स महीपालो न मया संगमेष्यति। तत्कामाग्निरवश्यं मां क्षपयिष्यति दुःसहः॥

yadyadya sa mahīpālo na mayā saṁgameṣyati| tatkāmāgniravaśyaṁ māṁ kṣapayiṣyati duḥsahaḥ||

"'If this king does not unite with me today, then this unbearable fire of desire will surely consume me.'"

Verse 20 (skanda.5.132.20)

रमणीयमभूद्यत्तु पुंस्कोकिलनिनादितम्। हीनं हि वल्लभेनैवं दहतीवाद्य मे वनम्॥

ramaṇīyamabhūdyattu puṁskokilanināditam| hīnaṁ hi vallabhenaivaṁ dahatīvādya me vanam||

"'This forest, once lovely, resounding with the call of the male cuckoo, now, bereft of my beloved, seems today to burn me.'"

Verse 21 (skanda.5.132.21)

इत्थं सा मदनाविष्टा विलपन्ती पुनःपुनः। ददर्श तापसं तत्र त्रिकालज्ञं दृढव्रतम्॥

itthaṁ sā madanāviṣṭā vilapantī punaḥpunaḥ| dadarśa tāpasaṁ tatra trikālajñaṁ dṛḍhavratam||

"Thus, possessed by the fire of love-longing, lamenting again and again, she then beheld there an ascetic, knower of the three times, firm in his vows."

Verse 22 (skanda.5.132.22)

मेखलाजिनकौपीनदण्डकाष्ठोपजीवनम्। महौजसं महाभागं मुमुक्षुं मुनिपुंगवम्॥

mekhalājinakaupīnadaṇḍakāṣṭhopajīvanam| mahaujasaṁ mahābhāgaṁ mumukṣuṁ munipuṁgavam||

"He wore the girdle-cord, the deerskin, and the loincloth, living on his staff and gathered wood; of great splendor, greatly blessed, seeking liberation, foremost of sages."

Verse 23 (skanda.5.132.23)

उदयादित्यसंकाशं विभावसुसमद्युतिम्। तं दृष्ट्वा सहसोत्थाय सा राज्ञी दुर्मता सती॥

udayādityasaṁkāśaṁ vibhāvasusamadyutim| taṁ dṛṣṭvā sahasotthāya sā rājñī durmatā satī||

"He shone like the rising sun, with a splendor equal to fire. Seeing him, that queen, though of afflicted mind, rose up at once."

Verse 24 (skanda.5.132.24)

विनयेनोपसंयम्य प्रणिपत्याभिवाद्य च। वियोगकारणं राज्ञः पप्रच्छ प्रणता सती॥

vinayenopasaṁyamya praṇipatyābhivādya ca| viyogakāraṇaṁ rājñaḥ papraccha praṇatā satī||

"Composing herself with humility, prostrating and bowing before him, that virtuous woman, bowed low, asked the sage the reason for her separation from the king."

Verse 25 (skanda.5.132.25)

भगवन्काशिराजस्य सुताहमतिवल्लभा। भगिनी शत्रुसेनस्य मातुश्चातीव वल्लभा॥

bhagavankāśirājasya sutāhamativallabhā| bhaginī śatrusenasya mātuścātīva vallabhā||

"'O venerable one, I am the most beloved daughter of the king of Kashi, sister of Shatrusena, and exceedingly dear to my mother.'"

Verse 26 (skanda.5.132.26)

अश्ववाहनसंज्ञेन नृपेणोढा महामुने। धर्मतो धर्मकल्पेन प्रजपतिसमेन तु॥

aśvavāhanasaṁjñena nṛpeṇoḍhā mahāmune| dharmato dharmakalpena prajapatisamena tu||

"'I was wedded, O great sage, by the king named Ashvavahana, duly, according to dharma, by one equal to Prajapati.'"

Verse 27 (skanda.5.132.27)

सा किमर्थं न चाभीष्टा जाताऽहं तस्य भूपतेः। स चातीव ममाभीष्टो नृपतिः सर्वदा विभो॥

sā kimarthaṁ na cābhīṣṭā jātā'haṁ tasya bhūpateḥ| sa cātīva mamābhīṣṭo nṛpatiḥ sarvadā vibho||

"'Why then have I not become dear to that king, though that king, O lord, is ever exceedingly dear to me?'"

Verse 28 (skanda.5.132.28)

दुर्भगाहं कथं जाता कर्मणा केन तापस। कथं भवति वश्यो मे भर्त्ता नृपतिसत्तमः। सौभाग्यं च कथं मे स्यादिति सत्यं च कथ्यताम्॥

durbhagāhaṁ kathaṁ jātā karmaṇā kena tāpasa| kathaṁ bhavati vaśyo me bharttā nṛpatisattamaḥ| saubhāgyaṁ ca kathaṁ me syāditi satyaṁ ca kathyatām||

"'How, O ascetic, by what deed did I become ill-fated? How may that best of kings, my husband, be won under my sway? And how may I obtain good fortune? Tell me this truly.'"

Verse 29 (skanda.5.132.29)

तस्यास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा स मुनिः संशितव्रतः। ज्ञानेन कथयामास तस्या दौर्भाग्यकारणम्॥

tasyāstadvacanaṁ śrutvā sa muniḥ saṁśitavrataḥ| jñānena kathayāmāsa tasyā daurbhāgyakāraṇam||

"Hearing her words, that sage of rigorous vows, by his knowledge, told her the cause of her misfortune."

Verse 30 (skanda.5.132.30)

पाणिग्रहणकाले त्वं ग्रहैः पापैर्विलोकिता। भर्ता ते नृपतिः पुत्रि ग्रहैः सौम्यैर्विलोकितः॥

pāṇigrahaṇakāle tvaṁ grahaiḥ pāpairvilokitā| bhartā te nṛpatiḥ putri grahaiḥ saumyairvilokitaḥ||

"'At the time of your marriage-rite, O daughter, you were looked upon by malefic planets; but your husband the king was looked upon by benefic planets.'"

Verse 31 (skanda.5.132.31)

तेन ते वल्लभो राजा न त्वं भूपस्य वल्लभा। इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा सा राज्ञी दीनमानसा। पप्रच्छ विनयोपेता भक्तिनम्रात्मकन्धरा॥

tena te vallabho rājā na tvaṁ bhūpasya vallabhā| iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā sā rājñī dīnamānasā| papraccha vinayopetā bhaktinamrātmakandharā||

"'For that reason the king is dear to you, but you are not dear to the king.' Hearing his words, that queen, downcast in mind, humbly, her neck bowed in devotion, asked again."

Verse 32 (skanda.5.132.32)

भगवन्केन दानेन स्नानेन नियमेन च। कर्मणा केन सौभाग्यं परमं हि कथं भवेत्॥

bhagavankena dānena snānena niyamena ca| karmaṇā kena saubhāgyaṁ paramaṁ hi kathaṁ bhavet||

"'O venerable one, by what gift, what bathing, what observance, by what act may supreme good fortune be attained?'"

Verse 33 (skanda.5.132.33)

इति तस्या वचः श्रुत्वा स मुनिः संशितव्रतः। कथयामास माहात्म्यं सौभाग्यं येन लभ्यते॥

iti tasyā vacaḥ śrutvā sa muniḥ saṁśitavrataḥ| kathayāmāsa māhātmyaṁ saubhāgyaṁ yena labhyate||

"Hearing her words, that sage of rigorous vows related the glory by which good fortune is obtained."

Verse 34 (skanda.5.132.34)

महाकालवने पुत्रि लिगं सौभाग्यदायकम्। मतंगेश्वरपार्श्वे तु विद्यतेऽभीष्टदायकम्। तस्य दर्शनमात्रेण सौभाग्यं समवाप्स्यसि॥

mahākālavane putri ligaṁ saubhāgyadāyakam| mataṁgeśvarapārśve tu vidyate'bhīṣṭadāyakam| tasya darśanamātreṇa saubhāgyaṁ samavāpsyasi||

"'In Mahakalavana, my daughter, there stands a linga bestowing good fortune, granting all desires, beside Matangeshvara. By the mere sight of it you shall attain good fortune.'"

Verse 35 (skanda.5.132.35)

इंद्राण्याराधितं लिंगं पुरा सौभाग्यकारणात्। सौभाग्यं परमं लब्धं नष्टः शक्रोऽपि लब्धवान्। तस्माद्गच्छ ममादेशान्महाकालवनं शुभम्॥

iṁdrāṇyārādhitaṁ liṁgaṁ purā saubhāgyakāraṇāt| saubhāgyaṁ paramaṁ labdhaṁ naṣṭaḥ śakro'pi labdhavān| tasmādgaccha mamādeśānmahākālavanaṁ śubham||

"'That linga was worshipped by Indrani in ancient times for the sake of good fortune, and thereby supreme good fortune was obtained; Indra too, though lost, regained it. Therefore, by my command, go to the auspicious Mahakalavana.'"

Verse 36 (skanda.5.132.36)

सौभाग्यं भविता तत्र कांतेन सह दर्शनम्। पुत्रो भविष्यति शुभे तस्य लिंगस्य दर्शनात्॥

saubhāgyaṁ bhavitā tatra kāṁtena saha darśanam| putro bhaviṣyati śubhe tasya liṁgasya darśanāt||

"'There you shall have good fortune, and union with your beloved; and, O auspicious one, a son too shall be born to you through the sight of that linga.'"

Verse 37 (skanda.5.132.37)

इत्युक्ता सा तदा तेन तापसेन वरानने। विद्यते यत्र तल्लिंगं महाकालवनं गता॥

ityuktā sā tadā tena tāpasena varānane| vidyate yatra talliṁgaṁ mahākālavanaṁ gatā||

"Thus addressed by that ascetic, O fair one, she then went to Mahakalavana, where that linga stood."

Verse 38 (skanda.5.132.38)

ददर्श प्रणयोपेता लिंगं सौभाग्यदायकम्। दर्शनात्तस्य लिंगस्य राजा सस्मार तां प्रियाम्॥

dadarśa praṇayopetā liṁgaṁ saubhāgyadāyakam| darśanāttasya liṁgasya rājā sasmāra tāṁ priyām||

"Full of devotion, she beheld the linga that bestows good fortune. And through the sight of that same linga, the king remembered his beloved."

Verse 39 (skanda.5.132.39)

पप्रच्छ जमदग्निं तु क्व गता मे प्रिया विभो। भक्षिता विपिने विप्र सिंहव्याघ्रनिशाचरैः॥

papraccha jamadagniṁ tu kva gatā me priyā vibho| bhakṣitā vipine vipra siṁhavyāghraniśācaraiḥ||

"He asked Jamadagni: 'O lord, where has my beloved gone? Has she been devoured in the forest, O brahmin, by lions, tigers, or night-wandering demons?'"

Verse 40 (skanda.5.132.40)

मया त्यक्ता नृशंसेन अहं तस्यास्तु वल्लभः। एवं ब्रुवाणो नृपतिः प्रत्युक्तो जमदग्निना॥

mayā tyaktā nṛśaṁsena ahaṁ tasyāstu vallabhaḥ| evaṁ bruvāṇo nṛpatiḥ pratyukto jamadagninā||

"'Abandoned by me, cruel that I was — yet I am still her beloved.' Speaking thus, the king was answered by Jamadagni."

Verse 41 (skanda.5.132.41)

न भक्षिता सा भूपाल सिंहव्याघ्रनिशाचरैः। सा चाविप्लुतचारित्रा त्वद्भक्ता च पतिव्रता॥

na bhakṣitā sā bhūpāla siṁhavyāghraniśācaraiḥ| sā cāviplutacāritrā tvadbhaktā ca pativratā||

"'She was not devoured, O king, by lions, tigers, or night-wanderers; her conduct is unblemished, she is devoted to you, a chaste and faithful wife.'"

Verse 42 (skanda.5.132.42)

महाकालवनं राजन्गता सौभाग्यकाम्यया। भार्या रक्ष्या महीपाल इति सा श्रुतिरुत्तमा॥

mahākālavanaṁ rājangatā saubhāgyakāmyayā| bhāryā rakṣyā mahīpāla iti sā śrutiruttamā||

"'O king, she has gone to Mahakalavana out of desire for good fortune. A wife is to be protected, O king — such is the supreme teaching of the shrutis.'"

Verse 43 (skanda.5.132.43)

भार्यायां रक्ष्यमाणायां प्रजा भवति रक्षिता। आत्मा हि जायते तस्यां सा रक्ष्यातो नरेश्वर॥

bhāryāyāṁ rakṣyamāṇāyāṁ prajā bhavati rakṣitā| ātmā hi jāyate tasyāṁ sā rakṣyāto nareśvara||

"'When the wife is protected, the offspring is protected; for one's own self is born in her — therefore, O lord of men, she is to be protected.'"

Verse 44 (skanda.5.132.44)

धर्महानिश्चानुदिनमभार्यस्य भवेन्नृप। नित्यक्रियाया विभ्रंशः स चापि पतनाय वै॥

dharmahāniścānudinamabhāryasya bhavennṛpa| nityakriyāyā vibhraṁśaḥ sa cāpi patanāya vai||

"'For a man without a wife, there is daily loss of dharma, O king; failure of the daily rites too leads surely to downfall.'"

Verse 45 (skanda.5.132.45)

पत्न्यानुकूलया भाव्यं यथाशीलेऽपि भर्त्तरि। दुःशीला दुर्भगा भार्या पोषणीया नरेश्वर॥

patnyānukūlayā bhāvyaṁ yathāśīle'pi bharttari| duḥśīlā durbhagā bhāryā poṣaṇīyā nareśvara||

"'The wife must be accommodating, whatever the disposition of her husband; even an ill-natured, unfortunate wife, O lord of men, is to be maintained.'"

Verse 46 (skanda.5.132.46)

इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा समायातो नरेश्वरः। महाकालवने रम्ये ददर्श स्वां प्रियां तदा॥

iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā samāyāto nareśvaraḥ| mahākālavane ramye dadarśa svāṁ priyāṁ tadā||

"Hearing his words, the king came at once to lovely Mahakalavana, and there beheld his own beloved."

Verse 47 (skanda.5.132.47)

सौभाग्यालंकृतां सुभ्रू पूजयंतीं महेश्वरम्। दृष्ट्वा स्नेहेन चालिंग्य प्रत्युवाच स तां प्रियाम्॥

saubhāgyālaṁkṛtāṁ subhrū pūjayaṁtīṁ maheśvaram| dṛṣṭvā snehena cāliṁgya pratyuvāca sa tāṁ priyām||

"Seeing her, fair-browed, adorned with good fortune, worshipping Maheshvara, he embraced her with affection and spoke to his beloved:"

Verse 48 (skanda.5.132.48)

विरहेण त्वदीयेन संतप्तोऽहं वरानने। अद्य मे सफलं चक्षुर्जीवितं च सुजीवितम्॥

viraheṇa tvadīyena saṁtapto'haṁ varānane| adya me saphalaṁ cakṣurjīvitaṁ ca sujīvitam||

"'I have been tormented by separation from you, O fair one. Today my eyes have become fruitful, and my life truly well-lived.'"

Verse 49 (skanda.5.132.49)

यत्त्वां पश्यामि सुभगे कृतार्थोहं कृतस्त्वया। एवं दृष्टातिहर्षेण सा ददर्श तदा पतिम्। उवाच च प्रसीदेति भूयो भूयो मुदान्विता॥

yattvāṁ paśyāmi subhage kṛtārthohaṁ kṛtastvayā| evaṁ dṛṣṭātiharṣeṇa sā dadarśa tadā patim| uvāca ca prasīdeti bhūyo bhūyo mudānvitā||

"'That I behold you, O fortunate one, I am fulfilled — fulfilled by you.' Seeing him thus, filled with great joy, she then gazed upon her husband and, overcome with delight, said again and again, 'Be gracious to me.'"

Verse 50 (skanda.5.132.50)

ततः स राजा रभसात्परिष्वज्याह भामिनीम्। प्रिये प्रसन्न एवाहं भूयो भूयो ब्रवीमि किम्॥

tataḥ sa rājā rabhasātpariṣvajyāha bhāminīm| priye prasanna evāhaṁ bhūyo bhūyo bravīmi kim||

"Then the king, eagerly embracing that lovely woman, said: 'O beloved, I am indeed pleased — what more shall I say, again and again?'"

Verse 51 (skanda.5.132.51)

ततः समागमो जातो जातः पुत्रोऽतिधार्मिकः। तस्य लिंगस्य माहात्म्याद्दत्तोनाम स गीयते॥

tataḥ samāgamo jāto jātaḥ putro'tidhārmikaḥ| tasya liṁgasya māhātmyāddattonāma sa gīyate||

"Thus their reunion came about, and a most righteous son was born; through the glory of that linga he is sung of by the name Datta."

Verse 52 (skanda.5.132.52)

सौभाग्यमतुलं लब्धं तया देव्या हिमात्मजे। सौभाग्येश्वरसंज्ञं तु ततःप्रभृति भूतले॥

saubhāgyamatulaṁ labdhaṁ tayā devyā himātmaje| saubhāgyeśvarasaṁjñaṁ tu tataḥprabhṛti bhūtale||

"By that queen incomparable good fortune was thus obtained, O daughter of the Himalaya; and from that time on, on earth, it became known by the name Saubhagyeshvara."

Verse 53 (skanda.5.132.53)

ये पश्यंति विशालाक्षि सौभाग्येश्वरमीश्वरम्। तेषां कुले न दौर्भाग्यं जायते पर्वतात्मजे॥

ye paśyaṁti viśālākṣi saubhāgyeśvaramīśvaram| teṣāṁ kule na daurbhāgyaṁ jāyate parvatātmaje||

"'Whoever, O wide-eyed one, beholds the lord Saubhagyeshvara, in their family, O daughter of the mountain, no misfortune ever arises.'"

Verse 54 (skanda.5.132.54)

भविष्यति न दारिद्र्यं वियोगो न च बन्धुभिः। पुत्रमित्रकलत्राणां लिंगस्य च समर्चनात्॥

bhaviṣyati na dāridryaṁ viyogo na ca bandhubhiḥ| putramitrakalatrāṇāṁ liṁgasya ca samarcanāt||

"'There will be no poverty, nor separation from kinsmen, nor from sons, friends, and wife, through the due worship of the linga.'"

Verse 55 (skanda.5.132.55)

नोपसर्गभयं तेषां ये पश्यंति वरानने। सौभाग्येश्वरसंज्ञं तु न ग्रहादिभयं भवेत्॥

nopasargabhayaṁ teṣāṁ ye paśyaṁti varānane| saubhāgyeśvarasaṁjñaṁ tu na grahādibhayaṁ bhavet||

"'Those who behold the one named Saubhagyeshvara, O fair one, have no fear of calamity; no fear of malefic planets or the like befalls them.'"

Verse 56 (skanda.5.132.56)

सर्वबाधाविनिर्मुक्तो धनधान्यसमन्वितः। मनुष्यो जायते देवि सौभाग्येश्वरदर्शनात्। संपूज्यः सर्वलोकेषु सौभाग्येकनिधिर्भवेत्॥

sarvabādhāvinirmukto dhanadhānyasamanvitaḥ| manuṣyo jāyate devi saubhāgyeśvaradarśanāt| saṁpūjyaḥ sarvalokeṣu saubhāgyekanidhirbhavet||

"'Freed from all afflictions, endowed with wealth and grain, a man becomes, O Devi, through the sight of Saubhagyeshvara; honored in all worlds, he becomes the sole treasury of good fortune.'"

Verse 57 (skanda.5.132.57)

जायते भूपतिर्लोके सार्वभौमो वरानने। नापुत्रा नाधना नारी न दीना न च दुःखिता। जायते दुर्भगा नैव सौभाग्येश्वरदर्शनात्॥

jāyate bhūpatirloke sārvabhaumo varānane| nāputrā nādhanā nārī na dīnā na ca duḥkhitā| jāyate durbhagā naiva saubhāgyeśvaradarśanāt||

"'He becomes a sovereign king of the whole earth in this world, O fair one; through the sight of Saubhagyeshvara a woman never becomes sonless, poor, wretched, sorrowful, or unfortunate.'"

Verse 58 (skanda.5.132.58)

न वैधव्यं न च व्याधिर्नाकालमरणं श्रिये। न पुत्रभर्तृजं दुःखं जायते लिंगदर्शनात्॥

na vaidhavyaṁ na ca vyādhirnākālamaraṇaṁ śriye| na putrabhartṛjaṁ duḥkhaṁ jāyate liṁgadarśanāt||

"'Neither widowhood, nor disease, nor untimely death befalls the fortunate; nor does sorrow born of son or husband arise, through the sight of the linga.'"

Verse 59 (skanda.5.132.59)

यथा लक्ष्मीर्हरेर्नित्यं सावित्री ब्रह्मणः स्मृता। रोहिणी वल्लभा चेंदोः शची शक्रस्य वल्लभा। तथा सा जायते नारी सौभाग्येश्वरदर्शनात्॥

yathā lakṣmīrharernityaṁ sāvitrī brahmaṇaḥ smṛtā| rohiṇī vallabhā ceṁdoḥ śacī śakrasya vallabhā| tathā sā jāyate nārī saubhāgyeśvaradarśanāt||

"'As Lakshmi is ever dear to Hari, as Savitri is remembered as beloved of Brahma, as Rohini is dear to the Moon, and Shachi dear to Indra — so does a woman become dear to her husband, through the sight of Saubhagyeshvara.'"

एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः। सौभाग्येश्वरदेवस्य शृणु रूपेश्वरं प्रिये॥

eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ| saubhāgyeśvaradevasya śṛṇu rūpeśvaraṁ priye||

"This, O Devi, is the sin-destroying power of the god Saubhagyeshvara that I have told you; now hear, O beloved, of Rupeshvara."
