The Glory of Dasharatheshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.7.171.1)

ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि देवीमेकल्लवीरिकाम्। एकल्लवीरायाम्ये तु नातिदूरे व्यवस्थिताम्

tato gacchenmahādevi devīmekallavīrikām| ekallavīrāyāmye tu nātidūre vyavasthitām

Then, O great Goddess, one should go to the goddess Ekallavirika, who stands not far to the south, in that place.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.171.2)

पूर्वं दशरथो योऽसौ सूर्यवंशविभूषणः। प्रभासं क्षेत्रमासाद्य तपश्चक्रे सुदुश्चरम्

pūrvaṁ daśaratho yo'sau sūryavaṁśavibhūṣaṇaḥ| prabhāsaṁ kṣetramāsādya tapaścakre suduścaram

In former times, King Dasharatha, ornament of the solar dynasty, having reached the sacred field of Prabhasa, performed extremely arduous austerities.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.171.3)

लिंगं तत्र प्रतिष्ठाप्य तोषयामास शांकरम्। स देवं प्रार्थयामास पुत्रं चैवामितौजसम्

liṁgaṁ tatra pratiṣṭhāpya toṣayāmāsa śāṁkaram| sa devaṁ prārthayāmāsa putraṁ caivāmitaujasam

Establishing a linga there, he pleased Lord Shankara, and prayed to that god for a son of boundless splendor.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.171.4)

ददौ तस्य तदा पुत्रं देवं त्रैलोक्यपूजितम्। रामेति नाम यस्यासीत्त्रैलोक्ये प्रथितं यशः

dadau tasya tadā putraṁ devaṁ trailokyapūjitam| rāmeti nāma yasyāsītrailokye prathitaṁ yaśaḥ

Then he granted him a son worshipped by all three worlds, whose name was Rama, whose fame became renowned throughout the three worlds.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.171.5)

यस्याद्यापीह गायन्ति भूर्भुवःस्वर्निवासिनः। देवदैत्यासुराः सर्वे वाल्मीक्याद्या महर्षयः

yasyādyāpīha gāyanti bhūrbhuvaḥsvarnivāsinaḥ| devadaityāsurāḥ sarve vālmīkyādyā maharṣayaḥ

Whose glory even today is sung here by the dwellers of the worlds Bhuh, Bhuvah, and Svah — all gods, daityas, asuras, and great sages beginning with Valmiki.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.171.6)

तल्लिंगस्य प्रभावेन प्राप्तं राज्ञा महद्यशः। कार्तिक्यां कार्तिके मासि विधिना यस्तमर्चयेत्। दीपपूजोपहारेण यशस्वी सोऽपि जायते

talliṁgasya prabhāvena prāptaṁ rājñā mahadyaśaḥ| kārtikyāṁ kārtike māsi vidhinā yastamarcayet| dīpapūjopahāreṇa yaśasvī so'pi jāyate

By the power of that linga alone did the king attain great fame. Whoever duly worships it on the Kartiki (full moon) of the month of Kartika, with offerings of lamps and worship, he too becomes renowned.
