The Glory of Bharateshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.7.172.1)

ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि लिंगं तद्भरतेश्वरम्। तस्मादुत्तरकोणस्थं नातिदूरं व्यवस्थितम्

tato gacchenmahādevi liṁgaṁ tadbharateśvaram| tasmāduttarakoṇasthaṁ nātidūraṁ vyavasthitam

Then, O great Goddess, one should go to that linga called Bharateshvara, situated not far in the northern corner from there.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.172.2)

भरतो नाम राजाऽभूदाग्नीध्रः प्रथितः क्षितौ। यस्येदं भारतं वर्षं नाम्ना लोकेषु गीयते

bharato nāma rājā'bhūdāgnīdhraḥ prathitaḥ kṣitau| yasyedaṁ bhārataṁ varṣaṁ nāmnā lokeṣu gīyate

On earth there was a renowned king named Bharata, son of Agnidhra, by whose name this land of Bharatavarsha is sung of among the people.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.172.3)

स च चक्रे तपो घोरं क्षेत्रेऽस्मिन्पार्वति प्रिये। दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं तु प्रतिष्ठाप्य महेश्वरम्

sa ca cakre tapo ghoraṁ kṣetre'sminpārvati priye| divyaṁ varṣasahasraṁ tu pratiṣṭhāpya maheśvaram

He, O beloved Parvati, having established Maheshvara in this field, performed terrible austerity for a divine thousand years.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.172.4)

पुत्रकामो नरश्रेष्ठः पूजयामास शंकरम्। ततस्तुष्टः स भगवान्वरं दातुं समुत्सुकः

putrakāmo naraśreṣṭhaḥ pūjayāmāsa śaṁkaram| tatastuṣṭaḥ sa bhagavānvaraṁ dātuṁ samutsukaḥ

That best of men, desiring a son, worshipped Shankara; then, pleased, the Lord became eager to grant a boon.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.172.5)

अष्टौ पुत्रान्ददौ तस्मै कन्यां चैकां यशस्विनीम्। स तु प्राप्याभिलषितं कृतकृत्यो नराधिपः

aṣṭau putrāndadau tasmai kanyāṁ caikāṁ yaśasvinīm| sa tu prāpyābhilaṣitaṁ kṛtakṛtyo narādhipaḥ

He gave him eight sons and one illustrious daughter; having obtained his desire, that lord of men became fulfilled.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.172.6)

भारतं नवधा कृत्वा पुत्रेभ्यः प्रददौ पृथक्। तेषां नामांकितान्येव ततो द्वीपानि जज्ञिरे

bhārataṁ navadhā kṛtvā putrebhyaḥ pradadau pṛthak| teṣāṁ nāmāṁkitānyeva tato dvīpāni jajñire

He divided Bharata(varsha) into nine parts and gave them separately to his sons; then islands (dvipas) arose, each marked with their names.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.172.7)

इन्द्रद्वीपः कसेरुश्च ताम्रवर्णो गभस्तिमान्। नागद्वीपस्तथा सौम्यो गान्धर्वस्त्वथ चारुणः

indradvīpaḥ kaseruśca tāmravarṇo gabhastimān| nāgadvīpastathā saumyo gāndharvastvatha cāruṇaḥ

Indradvipa, Kaseru, Tamravarna, Gabhastiman, Nagadvipa, Saumya, Gandharva, and Charuna —

Verse 8 (skanda.7.172.8)

अयं तु नवमो द्वीपः कुमार्या संज्ञितः प्रिये। अष्टौ द्वीपाः समुद्रेण प्लाविताश्च तथापरे

ayaṁ tu navamo dvīpaḥ kumāryā saṁjñitaḥ priye| aṣṭau dvīpāḥ samudreṇa plāvitāśca tathāpare

O beloved, this ninth island is known by the name Kumari; the other eight islands were inundated by the ocean.

Verse 9 (skanda.7.172.9)

ग्रामादिदेशसंयुक्ताः स्थिताः सागरमध्यगाः। एक एव स्थितस्तेषां कुमार्याख्यस्तु सांप्रतम्

grāmādideśasaṁyuktāḥ sthitāḥ sāgaramadhyagāḥ| eka eva sthitasteṣāṁ kumāryākhyastu sāṁpratam

They stood amid the ocean, joined with villages and regions; of them, only the one called Kumari now remains.

Verse 10 (skanda.7.172.10)

बिंदुसरः प्रभृत्येव सागराद्दक्षिणोत्तरम्। योजनानां सहस्रं तु एकं विस्तीर्ण एव तु

biṁdusaraḥ prabhṛtyeva sāgarāddakṣiṇottaram| yojanānāṁ sahasraṁ tu ekaṁ vistīrṇa eva tu

From Bindusara (lake) onward to the ocean, from south to north, it extends a thousand yojanas in breadth.

Verse 11 (skanda.7.172.11)

योजनानां सहस्राणि नव दैर्घ्यं प्रकीर्तितम्। तस्यैतज्जृम्भितं देवि भरतस्य महात्मनः

yojanānāṁ sahasrāṇi nava dairghyaṁ prakīrtitam| tasyaitajjṛmbhitaṁ devi bharatasya mahātmanaḥ

Nine thousand yojanas is declared to be its length; O goddess, this is the expanse of that great-souled Bharata.

Verse 12 (skanda.7.172.12)

षट्पञ्चाशदश्वमेधान्गंगामनु चकार यः। यस्त्रिंशद्यमुनाप्रान्ते भरतो लोकपूजितः

ṣaṭpañcāśadaśvamedhāngaṁgāmanu cakāra yaḥ| yastriṁśadyamunāprānte bharato lokapūjitaḥ

He who performed fifty-six horse-sacrifices along the Ganga, and thirty along the banks of the Yamuna — that Bharata, worshipped by the world —

Verse 13 (skanda.7.172.13)

स चेश्वरप्रसादेन मोदते दिवि देववत्

sa ceśvaraprasādena modate divi devavat

By the grace of Ishvara, he enjoys bliss in heaven like the gods.

Verse 14 (skanda.7.172.14)

यस्तत्प्रतिष्ठितं लिंगं भारतं पूजयिष्यति। स सर्वयज्ञदानानां फलं प्रापयिता धुवम्

yastatpratiṣṭhitaṁ liṁgaṁ bhārataṁ pūjayiṣyati| sa sarvayajñadānānāṁ phalaṁ prāpayitā dhuvam

Whoever shall worship that linga established by Bharata will surely obtain the fruit of all sacrifices and gifts.

Verse 15 (skanda.7.172.15)

कार्त्तिक्यां कृत्तिका योगे यस्तं पश्यति मानवः। न स पश्यति स्वप्नेपि नरकं घोरदारुणम्

kārttikyāṁ kṛttikā yoge yastaṁ paśyati mānavaḥ| na sa paśyati svapne'pi narakaṁ ghoradāruṇam

The man who beholds it during the Kartiki, in conjunction with the Krittika constellation, does not behold even in dream the terrible, dreadful hell.
