Narayana Ashtakam

nārāyaṇaṃ paraṃ brahma sarvakāraṇakāraṇam | prapadye sarvabhāvena bhavabhīto bhavārṇavāt ||1||

मैं नारायण की शरण लेता हूँ जो परम ब्रह्म हैं, सभी कारणों के कारण हैं। संसार-सागर से भयभीत होकर मैं अपने सम्पूर्ण भाव से उन्हें प्रणाम करता हूँ। वे ही वह परम सत्ता हैं जिससे सृष्टि उत्पन्न होती है और जिसमें वह विलीन हो जाती है।

I take refuge in Narayana, the Supreme Brahman, the cause of all causes, with my entire being. Gripped by fear of the ocean of worldly existence, I surrender completely to Him. He alone is the ultimate foundation from which all creation arises and into which all creation returns.

nārāyaṇo hṛdi sthitvā sarvaprāṇiṣu rājate | jñānadīpo mahātejāḥ sarvajñaḥ sarvatomukhaḥ ||2||

नारायण समस्त प्राणियों के हृदय में निवास करते हुए सर्वत्र प्रकाशित होते हैं। वे ज्ञान के दीपक हैं, महान तेज वाले हैं, सर्वज्ञ हैं और सभी दिशाओं में मुख किए हुए हैं। ऐसा कोई प्राणी नहीं, ऐसा कोई कोना नहीं जहाँ उनका प्रकाश न हो।

Narayana, residing within the heart of every living being, shines forth in all creation. He is the lamp of divine knowledge, blazing with supreme radiance, omniscient and facing in all directions simultaneously. There is no creature, no corner of existence, where His luminous presence does not dwell.

ākāśaṃ ca yathā nityaṃ sarvavyāpi nirañjanam | tathā nārāyaṇo devaḥ sarvabhūteṣu saṃsthitaḥ ||3||

जैसे आकाश नित्य है, सर्वव्यापी है और किसी भी वस्तु से लिप्त नहीं होता, वैसे ही देव नारायण समस्त प्राणियों में स्थित हैं। आकाश में अग्नि, तूफान और अंधकार सब समाते हैं फिर भी वह निर्मल रहता है; उसी प्रकार नारायण सृष्टि में व्याप्त होकर भी उससे लिप्त नहीं होते। वे वह असीम, निर्मल उपस्थिति हैं जो सब के साक्षी हैं।

Just as space is eternal, all-pervading, and unstained by anything that exists within it, so too is Lord Narayana eternally established in all living beings. The sky holds fire, storms, and darkness within it yet remains unaffected and pure; likewise Narayana pervades all of creation yet is never diminished or contaminated by it. He is the boundless, stainless presence that is the silent witness of all.

nārāyaṇaḥ paraṃ jyotiḥ nārāyaṇaḥ paraṃ tapaḥ | nārāyaṇaḥ paraṃ brahma nārāyaṇaḥ paro hariḥ ||4||

नारायण परम प्रकाश हैं जो सबको प्रकाशित करते हैं; नारायण ही परम तप हैं जो सब को शुद्ध करते हैं; नारायण ही परम ब्रह्म हैं, परम सत्य हैं; नारायण ही परम हरि हैं जो सभी पापों और दुखों को हर लेते हैं। इस चतुर्गुण उद्घोष में ज्ञान, तप, वेदांत और भक्ति — सभी मार्ग नारायण के एक नाम में मिल जाते हैं।

Narayana is the supreme light that illumines all; Narayana is the highest austerity that purifies all; Narayana is the supreme Brahman, the ultimate reality; Narayana is the highest Hari who removes all sins and sorrows. In this fourfold declaration, all paths of spiritual seeking — jnana, tapas, vedanta, and bhakti — converge in the single name of Narayana.

nārāyaṇaḥ sṛṣṭikartā nārāyaṇaḥ pālanaḥ smṛtaḥ | nārāyaṇaḥ saṃhartā ca nārāyaṇo muktidaḥ prabhuḥ ||5||

नारायण सृष्टि के रचयिता हैं, नारायण ही पालनकर्ता और रक्षक हैं, और नारायण ही संहार करने वाले हैं जो सब कुछ अपने में समेट लेते हैं। इन तीनों भूमिकाओं से परे, नारायण वह प्रभु हैं जो मुक्ति प्रदान करते हैं। जो सृजन, पालन और संहार करते हैं, वही हमारी परम मुक्ति का द्वार भी हैं।

Narayana is remembered as the creator of all creation, Narayana is the sustainer and protector of all that exists, and Narayana is also the dissolver who withdraws all things back into Himself. Beyond these three roles, Narayana is the Lord who grants liberation, the final freedom from all bondage. He who creates, sustains, and dissolves also holds in His hand the key to our ultimate release.

yasya pādāmbujaṃ dhyātvā brahmādyāḥ stuvate sadā | taṃ nārāyaṇamīśānaṃ bhaje bhaktiparāyaṇaḥ ||6||

जिनके चरणकमलों का ध्यान करके ब्रह्मा आदि देवता सदा उनकी स्तुति करते हैं, उन सर्वेश्वर नारायण को मैं भक्तिभाव से भजता हूँ। जो स्वयं सारे जगत के पूज्य हैं, वे भी नारायण के चरणों में झुकते हैं — यह हमें याद दिलाता है कि ब्रह्मांड की कोई भी शक्ति या बुद्धि अंततः उन्हीं में निहित है।

Meditating upon whose lotus feet, Brahma and all the other gods eternally sing His praises — that Narayana, the supreme ruler of all, I worship with complete devotion. Even those who are themselves objects of worship to the world bow before the lotus feet of Narayana, reminding us that there is no power or wisdom in the universe that is not ultimately rooted in Him.

nārāyaṇa namaste'stu vāsudeva namo'stu te | mādhava mādhavānanda śrīdhara me prasīda bhoḥ ||7||

हे नारायण, तुम्हें नमस्कार है; हे वासुदेव, तुम्हें प्रणाम है; हे माधव, हे माधवानन्द, हे श्रीधर — मुझ पर प्रसन्न होइए, हे प्रभु। यह श्लोक विष्णु के सबसे प्रिय नामों को एक माला में पिरोता है — प्रत्येक नाम उनकी महिमा के एक अलग आयाम का द्वार है: ब्रह्मांडीय स्वरूप, मानवीय रूप, दिव्य आनंद और कृपा की शक्ति।

O Narayana, salutations to You; O Vasudeva, I bow to You; O Madhava, O joy of Madhava, O Shridhara who holds Lakshmi herself — be gracious to me, O Lord. This verse strings together the most beloved names of Vishnu, each one a doorway into a different dimension of His glory: His cosmic nature, His human form, His divine bliss, and His grace-bestowing power.

idaṃ nārāyaṇāṣṭakaṃ yaḥ paṭhed bhaktimān naraḥ | sarvapāpavinirmuktaḥ nārāyaṇapadaṃ vrajet ||8||

जो भी भक्तिभाव से इस नारायण अष्टकम का पाठ करेगा, वह समस्त पापों से मुक्त होकर नारायण के परम धाम को प्राप्त होगा। यह फलश्रुति इस स्तोत्र को एक वचन के साथ समाप्त करती है: इन आठ श्लोकों के साथ सच्चा भक्तिपूर्ण जुड़ाव केवल अनुष्ठान नहीं, बल्कि एक रूपांतरकारी यात्रा है जो सच्चे साधक को सीधे प्रभु के चरणों तक ले जाती है।

Whoever recites this Narayana Ashtakam with true devotion shall be completely liberated from all sins and shall attain the supreme abode of Narayana. This phalaśruti — the declaration of fruits — seals the hymn with a promise: sincere devotional engagement with these eight verses is not mere ritual but a transformative journey that leads the sincere seeker directly to the feet of the Lord.
