Vishnu Ashtakam

śāntākāraṃ bhujaśayanaṃ padmanābhaṃ sureśam viśvādhāraṃ gaganasadṛśaṃ meghavarṇaṃ śubhāṅgam| lakṣmīkāntaṃ kamalanayanaṃ yogibhirdhyānagamyaṃ vande viṣṇuṃ bhavabhayaharaṃ sarvalokaikanātham||1||

मैं उन विष्णु को प्रणाम करता हूँ जिनका स्वरूप शांति का साक्षात् प्रतीक है, जो शेषनाग पर विश्राम करते हैं और जिनकी नाभि से कमल प्रकट हुआ। वे समस्त विश्व के आधार हैं, आकाश की भाँति व्यापक हैं, मेघ के समान श्यामवर्ण और सुंदर हैं। वे लक्ष्मी के प्रिय पति हैं, कमल-नेत्र वाले हैं, योगियों के ध्यान द्वारा प्राप्त होने वाले हैं और संसार के भय को हरने वाले सर्वलोकनाथ हैं।

I bow to Vishnu, whose very form is serene peace, who reclines on the cosmic serpent, from whose navel springs the lotus of creation. He is the foundation of all worlds, vast as the sky, dark and beautiful as a rain cloud, the beloved consort of Lakshmi, lotus-eyed, and attainable through the deep meditation of yogis. He is the remover of all fears of worldly existence and the singular lord of every realm.

kṣīrodadhau śayanamiridayā vilāsaṃ bhaktānukampitamanantamajaṃ purāṇam| vyomādhināthamakhilasya parāyaṇaṃ taṃ vande hariṃ sakalapāpaharaṃ vareṇyam||2||

मैं उन हरि को प्रणाम करता हूँ जो क्षीरसागर में लक्ष्मी के साथ विलास करते हुए शयन करते हैं और जो अपने भक्तों पर असीम करुणा रखते हैं। वे अनंत, अजन्मे और सबसे पुरातन हैं। वे आकाश के स्वामी, समस्त सृष्टि के परम आश्रय, सभी पापों के हरने वाले और सर्वश्रेष्ठ वंदनीय हैं।

I bow to Hari, who reclines blissfully on the ocean of milk in divine sport with Lakshmi, who is infinitely compassionate toward his devotees, who is without birth or end, and who is the most ancient being. He is the lord sovereign of the heavens, the ultimate refuge of all existence, the remover of every sin, and most worthy of all worship.

vasudevasutaṃ devaṃ kaṃsacāṇūramardanam devakīparamānandaṃ kṛṣṇaṃ vande jagadgurum||3||

मैं वसुदेव के पुत्र, कंस और चाणूर का वध करने वाले और माता देवकी के परम आनंद — कृष्ण को प्रणाम करता हूँ। वे जगत के गुरु हैं, जो सम्पूर्ण सृष्टि को धर्म और मोक्ष का मार्ग दिखाते हैं।

I bow to Krishna, the divine son of Vasudeva, the destroyer of the tyrants Kamsa and Chanura, who is the supreme joy of his mother Devaki. He is the universal teacher, the Jagadguru, who guides all of creation toward righteousness and liberation.

ātmārāmāya śāntāya śāśvatāya sukhātmane caturbhujāya tasmai śrī viṣṇave nama uttamam||4||

उन चतुर्भुज भगवान विष्णु को मेरा सर्वोत्तम नमस्कार है, जो अपने आत्मस्वरूप में ही आनंदमग्न रहते हैं, जो शाश्वत शांति के स्वरूप हैं, जो सनातन और अविनाशी हैं और जिनका स्वभाव ही आनंद है। यह नमस्कार केवल एक क्रिया नहीं, बल्कि परम सत्य की स्वीकृति है।

I offer the highest salutation to that Lord Vishnu — the four-armed one — who rejoices eternally within his own Self, who is the embodiment of perfect peace, who is everlasting, and whose very nature is pure bliss. This bow is not merely an act of ritual but the recognition of the supreme, self-sufficient truth that he embodies.

śaṅkhacakragadāpadmairvilasantaṃ caturbhujam bhaktakāmadughaṃ śāntaṃ viṣṇuṃ vande surārcitam||5||

मैं उन विष्णु को प्रणाम करता हूँ जो अपने चार हाथों में शंख, चक्र, गदा और पद्म धारण करके चमक रहे हैं। वे अपने भक्तों की समस्त कामनाएँ पूर्ण करने वाले कामधेनु के समान हैं, परम शांत हैं और इतने महान हैं कि स्वयं देवता भी उनकी पूजा करते हैं।

I bow to Vishnu, the four-armed lord who shines brilliantly with the conch, discus, mace, and lotus in his hands — each a symbol of a cosmic power he wields with effortless grace. He is the wish-fulfilling divine presence for all devotees, serene and unperturbed, and so magnificent that even the gods bow before him in worship.

śrīvatsalakṣmakaṃ viṣṇuṃ varadābhayadāyinam trilokhanāthaṃ deveśaṃ praṇato'smi janārdanam||6||

मैं उन विष्णु — जनार्दन — को प्रणाम करता हूँ जिनके वक्षस्थल पर श्रीवत्स का चिह्न है, जो अपने हाथों से वरदान और अभय प्रदान करते हैं, जो तीनों लोकों के नाथ और देवताओं के ईश हैं। उन्हें नमन करके मैं स्वीकार करता हूँ कि भौतिक आशीर्वाद और आंतरिक निर्भयता दोनों एक ही स्रोत से मिलती हैं।

I prostrate myself before Vishnu — Janardana — who bears the auspicious Shrivatsa mark upon his chest, who grants boons and bestows fearlessness with his divine hands, who is the master of all three worlds and the supreme lord of the gods. In bowing to him, I acknowledge that both material blessing and the gift of inner fearlessness come from the same divine source.

avyaktaṃ nityamavyagraṃ sarvavyāpinamavyayam yoginām paramaṃ dhāma viṣṇuṃ vande jagatpatim||7||

मैं उन जगत्पति विष्णु को प्रणाम करता हूँ जो अव्यक्त हैं, जो इंद्रियों की पहुँच से परे हैं, जो नित्य और अविचल हैं, जो सर्वत्र व्याप्त हैं और जो अविनाशी हैं। वे समस्त योगियों का परम धाम हैं — वह अवस्था जिसे पाने के लिए सच्चे साधक अपना पूरा जीवन लगा देते हैं।

I bow to Vishnu, the lord of the universe — who is unmanifest and beyond the grasp of ordinary perception, who is eternal and without agitation, who pervades all of existence without exception, and who is imperishable and inexhaustible. He is the supreme abode toward which all yogis direct their highest meditative seeking.

idaṃ viṣṇuravik ramate tredhā nidadhe padam samūḷhamasya pāṃsure| yo asya stotraṃ paṭhennityaṃ viṣṇoraṣṭakamuttamam sa yāti paramaṃ sthānaṃ yatra viṣṇuḥ sadā vaset||8||

विष्णु ने तीन पग में तीनों लोकों को नाप लिया और सब कुछ अपने चरणों में समेट लिया। जो भी इस उत्तम विष्णु अष्टकम का नित्य प्रतिदिन पाठ करता है, वह उस परम धाम को प्राप्त होता है जहाँ विष्णु सदा विराजमान रहते हैं। इस स्तोत्र का नियमित पाठ स्वयं मुक्ति का मार्ग बन जाता है।

Vishnu strode across the three worlds in three mighty steps, gathering all of existence within his cosmic footfall. Whoever recites this excellent Vishnu Ashtakam — these eight verses of praise — daily and with devotion, will surely attain the supreme abode where Vishnu eternally dwells. The consistent practice of this hymn becomes the very path to liberation.
