शूलपाणिः

The one who holds the trident in hand, whose three-pronged weapon penetrates through all three levels of existence to the undivided truth beneath

हाथ में त्रिशूल धारण करने वाले, जिनका तीन-भाला हथियार अखण्डित सत्य तक पहुँचने के लिए अस्तित्व के तीनों स्तरों को भेदता है

शूलपाणि दत्तात्रेय को वह नाम देता है जो हाथ (पाणि) में शूल (भाला, त्रिशूल) धारण करते हैं। शैव प्रतिमा-शास्त्र में हाथ में त्रिशूल दिव्य शक्ति की सक्रिय अभिव्यक्ति है: हथियार तैनाती के लिए तैयार, केवल वहन नहीं। उत्तराखण्ड के शूलपाणि केदारनाथ मन्दिर में और तमिलनाडु तथा कर्नाटक के विभिन्न शूलपाणि तीर्थों में दत्तात्रेय के शैव आयाम को उसके सबसे सक्रिय रूप में मनाया जाता है।
