महातपस्वी, जिन्होंने सभी सुख से परे अपनी सबसे गहरी प्रकृति में निरन्तर उपस्थिति की सर्वोच्च तपस्या की है

महातपस दत्तात्रेय को महान तपस्वी (महा-तपस्) नाम देता है। दत्तात्रेय का तपस सबसे बड़ा है: किसी बाहरी वस्तु या अभ्यास के किसी समर्थन के बिना अपनी आत्मन् प्रकृति में शाश्वत निवास। यह सबसे कठिन तपस है क्योंकि इसके लिए आध्यात्मिक अभ्यासों के सुख को भी छोड़ना और आत्मा की अपनी प्रकृति की सीधी पहचान में विश्राम करना आवश्यक है।
