Bhavani Ashtakam

na tāto na mātā na bandhurna dātā na putro na putrī na bhṛtyo na bhartā| na jāyā na vidyā na vṛttirmmamaiva gatistvam gatistvam tvamekā bhavāni||1||

न पिता, न माता, न कोई रिश्तेदार, न कोई दाता — इनमें से कोई भी अंततः मेरा नहीं है। न पुत्र, न पुत्री, न सेवक, न पति, न पत्नी, न विद्या, न आजीविका — ये सब मेरे नहीं हैं। हे भवानी! तुम ही मेरी एकमात्र गति हो, तुम ही मेरी शरण हो।

Neither father nor mother, neither kinsman nor benefactor, neither son nor daughter, neither servant nor husband — none of these do I claim as truly mine. Neither wife, nor knowledge, nor livelihood belongs to me in any ultimate sense. O Bhavani, You alone are my refuge, You alone are my refuge — You are the one and only.

bhavābdhāvapāre mahāduḥkhabhīru papāta prakāmī pralobhī pramattaḥ| kusaṃsārapāśaprabaddhaḥ sadāhaṃ gatistvam gatistvam tvamekā bhavāni||2||

इस अपार संसार-सागर में महान दुःखों से भयभीत होकर मैं डूब रहा हूँ — कामना, लोभ और मोह से ग्रस्त होकर। इस दुखद संसार के बंधन में मैं सदा जकड़ा हुआ हूँ। हे भवानी! तुम ही मेरी एकमात्र गति हो, तुम ही मेरी शरण हो।

In the fathomless ocean of worldly existence, terrified by immense suffering, I have fallen — overwhelmed by desire, gripped by greed, and stupefied by delusion. I am always tightly bound by the cruel noose of this painful worldly entanglement. O Bhavani, You alone are my refuge, You alone are my refuge — You are the one and only.

na dharmo na cārtho na kāmo na mokṣo na sattvaṃ na tattvaṃ na yogo'pi jāne| na jāne kadācit kriyāyogamārgaṃ gatistvam gatistvam tvamekā bhavāni||3||

मुझे न धर्म का ज्ञान है, न अर्थ का, न काम का और न मोक्ष का। न सत्त्व को जानता हूँ, न तत्त्व को, न योग को। क्रियायोग के मार्ग को भी मैंने कभी नहीं जाना। हे भवानी! तुम ही मेरी एकमात्र गति हो, तुम ही मेरी शरण हो।

I know neither dharma nor wealth, neither desire nor liberation — I understand neither pure essence nor ultimate truth, nor even the path of yoga. I have never known the path of ritual action and devotional practice in any form. O Bhavani, You alone are my refuge, You alone are my refuge — You are the one and only.

na jāne supūjāṃ na jāne sutīrthaṃ na jāne mudrāṃ na jāne ca dharmam| na jāne kathāṃ dhyānayogādikaṃ vā gatistvam gatistvam tvamekā bhavāni||4||

मुझे न पूजा की विधि पता है, न तीर्थों का ज्ञान है, न मुद्राएँ जानता हूँ और न धर्म के नियम। न कथाओं का ज्ञान है, न ध्यान का, न योग का। हे भवानी! तुम ही मेरी एकमात्र गति हो, तुम ही मेरी शरण हो।

I know not the proper way of worship, I know not the sacred pilgrimage sites, I know not the ritual gestures, nor do I know righteous conduct. I know neither the sacred narratives nor meditation nor the paths of yoga and other spiritual disciplines. O Bhavani, You alone are my refuge, You alone are my refuge — You are the one and only.

kukarmī kusaṅgī kubuddhiḥ kudāsaḥ kulācārahīnaḥ kadācāralīnaḥ| kudṛṣṭiḥ kuvākyaprabandhaḥ sadāhaṃ gatistvam gatistvam tvamekā bhavāni||5||

मैं बुरे कर्म करने वाला, कुसंगति में रहने वाला, दूषित बुद्धि वाला और एक निकृष्ट सेवक हूँ। मैं कुलाचार से रहित और दुराचार में डूबा हुआ हूँ। मेरी दृष्टि विकृत है और मेरी वाणी सदा कड़वी रहती है। हे भवानी! तुम ही मेरी एकमात्र गति हो।

I am one who performs evil deeds, keeps bad company, possesses a corrupted intellect, and is a wretched servant. I am devoid of family virtues and good conduct, deeply immersed in wicked behavior. I am always of perverted vision and forever engaged in harsh and harmful speech. O Bhavani, You alone are my refuge, You alone are my refuge — You are the one and only.

prajeśaṃ rameśaṃ maheśaṃ sureśaṃ dineśaṃ niśītheśvaraṃ vā kadācit| na jāne kadācicca ṣaḍvargamukataṃ gatistvam gatistvam tvamekā bhavāni||6||

मैंने कभी ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, महेश, इंद्र, सूर्य और चंद्रमा की उचित रीति से उपासना नहीं की। काम, क्रोध, लोभ, मोह, मद और मत्सर — इन षड्विकारों से मुक्ति का मार्ग भी मुझे कभी नहीं मिला। हे भवानी! तुम ही मेरी एकमात्र गति हो, तुम ही मेरी शरण हो।

I have never properly meditated upon Brahma the lord of all beings, nor Vishnu the lord of Lakshmi, nor the great Shiva, nor Indra the lord of gods, nor the Sun, nor the Moon. I have never known the state of being free from the six inner enemies of lust, anger, greed, delusion, pride, and envy. O Bhavani, You alone are my refuge, You alone are my refuge — You are the one and only.

virañci mahendrastu govindanātho ravirbhānumatyādibhirvandyamānām| surāsurairvandita pādāravindāṃ gatistvam gatistvam tvamekā bhavāni||7||

हे भवानी! तुम्हारी पूजा ब्रह्मा, इंद्र, गोविंद विष्णु, सूर्य और भानुमती आदि सभी देवता करते हैं। तुम्हारे चरण-कमलों की वंदना देवता और असुर दोनों करते हैं। हे भवानी! तुम ही मेरी एकमात्र गति हो, तुम ही मेरी शरण हो।

You, O Bhavani, are worshipped by Brahma the creator, by the great Indra, by Govinda the lord Vishnu, by the Sun and by the luminous goddess and all celestial beings. Your lotus feet are bowed to by both the gods and the demons alike. O Bhavani, You alone are my refuge, You alone are my refuge — You are the one and only.

na mokṣasya kāṅkṣā bhave naiva kāṅkṣā na vijñānamicchāmi na caiva saukhyam| aste tvayi bhaktistvadanye'stu sarve gatistvam gatistvam tvamekā bhavāni||8||

मुझे न मोक्ष की इच्छा है, न संसार में किसी चीज़ की कामना है। न विज्ञान चाहिए, न सुख-भोग। केवल तुम्हारी भक्ति बनी रहे — तुम्हारे अतिरिक्त जो भी हो, रहे या न रहे। हे भवानी! तुम ही मेरी एकमात्र गति हो, तुम ही मेरी शरण हो।

I have no longing for liberation, nor do I desire anything in this world of becoming. I do not seek spiritual wisdom, nor do I crave happiness or pleasure. Let there be only devotion to You — let all other things, all else besides You, be as they may. O Bhavani, You alone are my refuge, You alone are my refuge — You are the one and only.
