Meenakshi Ashtakam

udyadbhānusahasrakoṭisadṛśāṃ keyūrahārojjvalāṃ bimboṣṭhīṃ smitadantapaṅktirucirāṃ pītāmbarālaṅkṛtām | viṣṇubrahmasurendra­sevitapadāṃ tattvasvarūpāṃ śivāṃ mīnākṣīṃ praṇato'smi santatamahaṃ kāruṇyavārāṃnidhim ||1||

मैं सदा मीनाक्षी देवी को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो सहस्र कोटि उदयमान सूर्यों के समान दीप्तिमान हैं, केयूर और हारों से उज्ज्वल हैं, जिनके ओठ बिम्बफल के समान लाल हैं और दाँतों की पंक्ति मधुर मुस्कान से सुशोभित है। विष्णु, ब्रह्मा और इन्द्र जिनके चरणों की सेवा करते हैं, वे तत्त्वस्वरूपिणी, परम मंगलमयी और करुणा की अपार सागर हैं।

I perpetually bow to Goddess Meenakshi, who shines with the brilliance of a thousand crore rising suns, adorned with armlets and garlands, with lips red as the bimba fruit and a row of radiant smiling teeth, dressed in golden yellow garments. Her feet are worshipped by Vishnu, Brahma, and Indra, the lord of the gods; she is the embodiment of ultimate truth and is the auspicious Shiva-Shakti herself. She is the boundless ocean of compassion to whom I surrender completely.

muktāmaṇivarṇavibhūṣitāṅgīṃ māṇikyakeyūrasubhūṣitāṅgīm | kāñcīpurīvāsinīṃ madaneśīṃ mīnākṣidevīṃ manasā smarāmi ||2||

मैं मन से मीनाक्षी देवी का ध्यान करता हूँ, जिनका दिव्य शरीर मोती, मणि और स्वर्ण से विभूषित है और माणिक्य के केयूरों से सुसज्जित है। वे काञ्चीपुरी में निवास करने वाली और प्रेम तथा सौन्दर्य की स्वामिनी हैं। उनका स्मरण मात्र मन को पवित्र और आनंदमग्न कर देता है।

I meditate in my heart upon Goddess Meenakshi, whose divine body is adorned with pearls, precious gems, and gold, and who is further beautified by ruby-studded armlets and ornaments. She dwells in the sacred city of Kanchipuram and is the sovereign of beauty and love itself. Her very remembrance purifies the mind and fills it with divine splendor.

śyāmalāṃ śivakāmeśvarīṃ paradevatāṃ sundarāmbikāṃ madhurapurādhināyikām | pārvatīṃ ca paramām anādisiddhāṃ mīnākṣīṃ praṇato'smi santatamaham ||3||

मैं सदा मीनाक्षी को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो श्यामवर्णा हैं, शिव की प्रियतमा और प्रेम की देवी हैं, परम देवता और सुन्दर अम्बिका हैं, तथा मधुरपुरी की अधिनायिका हैं। वे स्वयं पार्वती हैं, परम और अनादिकाल से सिद्ध हैं। उनका श्यामल रूप प्रकृति की शाश्वत शक्ति और सृजन की अनंत ऊर्जा का प्रतीक है।

I perpetually bow to Meenakshi, the emerald-green Goddess who is the beloved of Shiva and the mistress of divine love, the supreme deity and the beautiful mother, the sovereign queen of the sacred city of Madurai. She is Parvati herself, the supreme and eternally accomplished one who exists without beginning. Her green form represents the eternal fertility of nature and the ever-renewing power of creation.

sundareśvarasahodarīṃ trinayanāṃ devīṃ ca bhaktapriyām | haste pāśamabhītimudravaraddāṃ cābhīṣṭaphalapradām | śrīcakrāṅkitabindumadhayanilayāṃ śrīmattripurasundarīm mīnākṣīṃ praṇato'smi santatamahaṃ kāruṇyavārāṃnidhim ||4||

मैं सदा करुणा की अपार सागर मीनाक्षी देवी को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो सुन्दरेश्वर की सहोदरी हैं, त्रिनयना हैं और भक्तों की प्रिया हैं। वे हाथों में पाश धारण करती हैं और अभय तथा वरद मुद्रा से भक्तों को अभीष्ट फल देती हैं। वे श्रीचक्र के बिन्दुमध्य में निवास करने वाली श्रीमत् त्रिपुरसुन्दरी हैं।

I perpetually bow to Goddess Meenakshi, the ocean of compassion, who is the sister of Sundareswara, the three-eyed goddess so dear to her devotees. In her hands she holds the noose and displays the gestures of fearlessness and boon-giving, readily bestowing upon her devotees all their desired results. She dwells at the central bindu point of the Sri Chakra and is the glorious Tripura Sundari—the supreme beauty who encompasses all three worlds.

śṛṅgāravveṣāṃ śivaśaktirūpāṃ maheśvarīṃ vedavilāsinīm | hemāmbarāṃ hemavibhūṣitāṅgīṃ namāmi mīnākṣimanātharakṣām ||5||

मैं मीनाक्षी देवी को नमस्कार करता हूँ, जो शृंगार वेष में सज्जित हैं और शिवशक्ति का साक्षात् स्वरूप हैं। वे महेश्वरी हैं जो वेदों में विहार करती हैं और स्वर्ण वस्त्र तथा स्वर्णाभूषणों से सुसज्जित हैं। वे अनाथों और असहायों की रक्षिका हैं, जो सबको अपनी शरण में लेती हैं।

I bow to Goddess Meenakshi, who is adorned in the enchanting garb of divine romance and beauty, and who is the very embodiment of Shiva's cosmic power. She is the great goddess Maheshwari who delights in the Vedas, robed in golden garments with her divine body adorned entirely in gold. She is the supreme protector of the helpless and the abandoned, extending her shelter to all who have nowhere else to turn.

kadambavana vāsinīṃ vimalamūrtikāṃ padmarāgamaṇikuṇḍalābharaṇām | kṛpānidhiṃ komalāṅgīṃ mīnākṣīṃ śaraṇamahaṃ prapadye ||6||

मैं मीनाक्षी देवी की शरण लेता हूँ, जो कदम्बवन में निवास करती हैं, जिनकी मूर्ति विमल और निर्मल है, और जो पद्मराग मणि के कुण्डलों और आभरणों से सुसज्जित हैं। वे करुणा की खान हैं और उनके कोमल अंग सबको प्रेम और ऊष्मा प्रदान करते हैं। मैं सर्वस्व त्यागकर उनकी शरण में आता हूँ।

I take complete refuge in Goddess Meenakshi, who dwells in the sacred Kadamba forest, whose form is pure and immaculate, and who is adorned with ruby-red gem-studded earrings and other divine ornaments. She is a treasure house of compassion and her limbs are ever tender and gentle, radiating warmth to all who approach her. Surrendering to her grace, I seek her as my ultimate shelter in all situations of life.

kumārīṃ tripurāṃ devīṃ sarvāṇīṃ sarvamaṅgalām | vāmākṣīṃ caṇḍikāṃ durgāṃ mīnākṣīṃ praṇamāmyaham ||7||

मैं मीनाक्षी देवी को प्रणाम करता हूँ जो कुमारी, त्रिपुरा, देवी, सर्वाणी और सर्वमंगला हैं। वे ही वामाक्षी, चण्डिका और दुर्गा हैं—सभी रूपों में एक ही परमशक्ति विद्यमान है। यह श्लोक सिखाता है कि सभी देवियाँ उस एक परम माँ की ही विभिन्न अभिव्यक्तियाँ हैं।

I offer my reverent obeisance to Meenakshi, who is simultaneously the eternal virgin Kumari, the goddess of the three worlds Tripura, the all-encompassing Sarvani, and the bestower of all auspiciousness Sarva Mangala. She is Vamakshi the beautiful-eyed, the fierce Chandika, the invincible Durga, and yet through all these forms she is one and the same Meenakshi. This verse reveals that all goddesses are manifestations of the one supreme mother.

ityetanmīnākṣīstotraṃ śaṅkarācāryasadguroḥ | yaḥ paṭhet prātarutthāya sarvān kāmānavāpnuyāt ||8||

इस प्रकार सद्गुरु शङ्कराचार्य द्वारा रचित यह मीनाक्षी स्तोत्र सम्पूर्ण होता है। जो भी भक्त प्रातःकाल उठकर श्रद्धा और भक्तिभाव से इन श्लोकों का पाठ करेगा, उसकी सभी इच्छाएँ और मनोकामनाएँ देवी की कृपा से पूर्ण होंगी। यह फलश्रुति इस अष्टकम् की दिव्य शक्ति का प्रमाण है।

Thus concludes this sacred hymn to Goddess Meenakshi, composed by the great sadguru Shankaracharya, the revered teacher of Advaita wisdom. Whoever rises early in the morning and recites these verses with devotion and sincerity shall have all their desires and aspirations fulfilled by the grace of the goddess. This phalashruti seals the power of the ashtakam and promises divine blessings to sincere seekers.
