Shyamala Ashtakam

stotraṃ śyāmalāyāḥ kavīndraiḥ praśastaṃ sarasvatyabhedaṃ suraiḥ sevyamānam । ataṅgasya kanyāṃ manojñāṃ trinetrāṃ namāmi śriyaṃ śyāmalāṃ tantrarājñīm ।।1।।

मैं श्यामला देवी को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जिनकी स्तुति महाकवियों ने की है और देवताओं ने जिनकी आराधना की है। वे सरस्वती से अभिन्न हैं, मतंग मुनि की कन्या हैं, मनोहर रूप और तीन नेत्रों से सुशोभित हैं। वे तंत्र परंपरा की सर्वोच्च अधिष्ठात्री देवी हैं।

I bow to Shyamala, the dark and beautiful goddess, celebrated in hymns by the greatest of poets and worshipped by the gods themselves. She is non-different from Saraswati, the daughter of the sage Matanga, lovely in form, and possessed of three eyes. She is the auspicious sovereign queen of the Tantric tradition.

vīṇāvādanatatparāṃ madhumatīṃ vācāṃ prasūtiṃ parāṃ nīlāmbhoruhalocaṇāṃ sitadatīṃ sarvāṅgasundarīm । sampūrṇāṃ karuṇārasena madhurāṃ mātaṅgakanyāṃ bhaje śyāmāṃ candrakalādharāṃ trinayanāṃ śrīmatparśīṃ śubhām ।।2।।

मैं मतंग मुनि की कन्या की भक्तिपूर्वक उपासना करता हूँ, जो वीणा वादन में तत्पर रहती हैं और जो सभी वाणियों की परम जननी हैं। उनके नेत्र नीलकमल के समान हैं, दाँत चमकीले श्वेत हैं और उनका प्रत्येक अंग अत्यंत सुंदर है। वे करुणा रस से परिपूर्ण, श्यामवर्णा, चंद्रकला धारण करने वाली, त्रिनेत्री और परम शुभदायिनी हैं।

I worship Matangi, the daughter of the sage Matanga, ever absorbed in the melodious playing of the veena, the supreme mother and origin of all speech. Her eyes are like blue lotuses, her teeth are brilliantly white, and every part of her form is exquisitely beautiful. She is filled with the essence of compassion, sweet in nature, dark in complexion, adorned with the crescent moon, three-eyed, and supremely auspicious.

sarasijanilaiye sarojahaste dhavalataraṃśukagandhamālyaśobhe । bhagavati harivallabhe manojñe tribhuvanabhūtikari prasīda mahyam ।।3।।

हे देवी, जो कमल में निवास करती हैं, जिनके हाथ में कमल है, जो श्वेत वस्त्र और सुगंधित मालाओं से सुशोभित हैं — आप मुझ पर कृपा करें। हे भगवती, विष्णु की प्रिये, मन को प्रसन्न करने वाली, तीनों लोकों को समृद्धि प्रदान करने वाली — आप मुझ पर प्रसन्न हों। आपकी कृपा ही मेरा एकमात्र आश्रय है।

O Goddess who dwells in the lotus, who holds a lotus in her hand, who shines resplendently in brilliant white garments adorned with fragrant garlands—be gracious unto me. O blessed one, beloved of Hari, pleasing to all minds, you are the one who bestows prosperity upon all three worlds. Please shower your grace upon me.

namaste śyāmale devi namaste madhurapiye । namaste varade devi namaste tantranāyike ।।4।। namaste vīṇāhaste ca namaste mokṣadāyini । namaste jñānarūpe ca namaste siddhidāyini ।।

हे श्यामल देवी, आपको नमस्कार है; हे मधुरता की प्रिये, आपको नमस्कार है। हे वरदायिनी, हे तंत्र की नायिका, आपको बारंबार नमस्कार है। हे वीणाधारिणी, हे मोक्षदायिनी, आपको नमस्कार है। हे ज्ञानस्वरूपिणी, हे सर्व सिद्धियाँ प्रदान करने वाली देवी, आपको कोटि-कोटि नमस्कार है।

Salutations to you, O dark Goddess Shyamala; salutations to you, O lover of all that is sweet. Salutations to you, O giver of boons; salutations to you, O queen of the Tantric path. Salutations to you who hold the veena in your hand; salutations to you, O bestower of liberation. Salutations to you who are the very form of wisdom; salutations to you, O bestower of all spiritual accomplishments.

suvarṇavarṇāṃ sulalitaveṇīṃ maṇiprabhāṃ candanacarcitāṅgīm । sucārunetrāṃ sukapolabhāgāṃ śyāmāṃ bhaje bhaktinaṭo munīśām ।।5।।

मैं भक्तिभाव से नतमस्तक होकर श्यामला देवी की उपासना करता हूँ, जिनका श्यामल शरीर सुवर्ण-आभा से दीप्तिमान है, जिनकी सुंदर वेणी मनोहर है और जो रत्न की भाँति प्रकाशित हैं। उनके अंगों पर चंदन का लेप है, उनके नेत्र अत्यंत मनोरम हैं और उनके गाल सुंदर हैं। वे महर्षि की दिव्य पुत्री हैं, जिनकी भक्तिपूर्वक वंदना की जाती है।

I bow in devotion and worship Shyamala, the dark goddess whose body radiates a golden luminosity, whose braided hair is gracefully beautiful, and who shines like a precious gem. Her limbs are anointed with fragrant sandalwood paste, her eyes are exquisitely beautiful, and her cheeks are lovely and full. She is the divine daughter of the greatest of sages, worshipped by all who bow in sincere devotion.

vidyādharaiḥ sevyamānāṃ sadā tvāṃ caturbhirvedaiḥ stūyamānāṃ maheśi । samastadevaiḥ pūjyamānāṃ natoasmi śyāmāṃ kalāvittamāṃ devatāṃ tām ।।6।।

हे महेशि, मैं आपको प्रणाम करता हूँ — जिनकी सेवा विद्याधर गण सदा करते हैं और जिनकी स्तुति चारों वेद करते हैं। समस्त देवगण जिनकी पूजा करते हैं और जो सभी चौसठ कलाओं में परम निपुण हैं। उन श्यामला देवी को, समस्त कलाओं की अधिष्ठात्री को, मैं नतमस्तक होकर वंदन करता हूँ।

O great Goddess, I bow to you—she who is ever attended upon by the Vidyadharas, the celestial beings of knowledge, and who is praised by all four Vedas. She is worshipped by the entire assembly of gods and is supremely accomplished in all sixty-four arts and sciences. To that dark goddess Shyamala, the ultimate deity of all creative and intellectual endeavor, I humbly bow.

kadambavanavasīnīṃ munikadambakārādhitāṃ jagajjananakaraṇīṃ niravadhipriyāṃ śyāmalām । bhaje bhuvanasundarīmanudināṃ trilokīśvarīṃ surāsurasupūjitāṃ ratimatīṃ satīṃ śreyasīm ।।7।।

मैं प्रतिदिन श्यामला देवी की उपासना करता हूँ — जो कदंबवन में निवास करती हैं, मुनियों के समूह द्वारा जिनकी आराधना की जाती है और जो जगत की सृष्टि का कारण हैं। वे अनंत प्रिय हैं, तीनों भुवनों की सौंदर्यराशि हैं, त्रिलोकी की ईश्वरी हैं और देव तथा असुर दोनों उनकी पूजा करते हैं। वे प्रेममयी, सत्यस्वरूपा और परम कल्याणकारिणी हैं।

I worship Shyamala every day—she who dwells in the kadamba forest, who is worshipped by the entire assembly of sages, and who is the very cause of the creation of the universe. She is infinitely beloved, the beauty of all the worlds, the sovereign ruler of the three realms, and she is worshipped by both gods and demons alike. She is filled with divine love, supremely virtuous, and is the ultimate auspicious good.

idaṃ śyāmalāstotramaṣṭakaṃ yaḥ paṭhennараḥ । kālidāsena racitaṃ bhaktyā devyāṃ samāhitaḥ ।। sa vidyāṃ vipulāṃ prāpya vāgmī kāvyakalānidhiḥ । śyāmalāprasādalabdhaśrīḥ sukhī syānnātra saṃśayaḥ ।।8।।

जो व्यक्ति कालिदास द्वारा रचित इस श्यामलाष्टक का भक्तिपूर्वक और एकाग्रचित्त से पाठ करेगा, वह विपुल विद्या को प्राप्त करेगा। वह व्यक्ति वाग्मी अर्थात प्रभावशाली वक्ता बनेगा और काव्यकला का निधि — यानी साहित्य और कला का भंडार — बन जाएगा। श्यामला देवी के प्रसाद से उसे श्री-समृद्धि और सुख की प्राप्ति होगी, इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं।

Whoever recites this eight-verse hymn to Shyamala—composed by Kalidasa—with sincere devotion and a focused, concentrated mind, will attain vast and abundant knowledge. That person will become a great and eloquent speaker, a veritable treasury of the art of poetry, and will be endowed with prosperity and auspiciousness through the grace of Shyamala. Such a person will certainly attain happiness—of this there is absolutely no doubt.
