Tripura Sundari Ashtakam

kadamba-vana-cāriṇīṃ muni-kadamba-kādāmbinīṃ nitamba-jita-bhūdharāṃ sura-nitambinī-sevitām | nava-ambuda-samadyutiṃ nayana-trayādhīśvarīṃ mahāpura-parīśvarīṃ mati-madāntara-sthāṃ bhaje ||1||

मैं उस देवी की वंदना करता हूँ जो कदम्ब वन में विचरण करती हैं और मुनियों के समूह के लिए मेघमाला के समान कल्याणकारी हैं। उनके नितम्ब पर्वतों को भी लज्जित करते हैं और देव-अप्सराएँ उनकी सेवा करती हैं। वे नवीन मेघ के समान कान्तिमयी हैं, तीन नेत्रों की स्वामिनी हैं, श्रीपुर की परम ईश्वरी हैं और ज्ञानीजनों के हृदय में विराजती हैं।

I worship the Goddess who wanders through the kadamba forest, who is like a great rain cloud for the assembly of sages thirsting for wisdom. Her magnificent hips surpass the grandeur of mountains, and she is attended upon by the most beautiful celestial beings. She shines with the radiance of fresh monsoon clouds, possesses three all-seeing eyes, and reigns supreme over the great city of the Sri Chakra, dwelling ever within the enlightened mind.

kadamba-vana-vāsinīṃ kanaka-tuṅga-kucāmbarāṃ kalābhir-abhirañjitāṃ kalita-kāla-kaṇṭha-stutām | kapāli-kṛta-kālikāṃ kavi-kuleṣṭa-dāyinīṃ mahāpura-parīśvarīṃ mati-madāntara-sthāṃ bhaje ||2||

मैं उस देवी की भक्तिपूर्वक वंदना करता हूँ जो कदम्ब वन में निवास करती हैं और सुवर्ण वस्त्रों से सुशोभित हैं। वे चौंसठ कलाओं से अलंकृत हैं और स्वयं नीलकण्ठ शिव द्वारा भी पूजित हैं। वे कवि-समुदाय को उनकी इष्ट सिद्धि प्रदान करती हैं और ज्ञानी पुरुषों के मन में सदा विराजमान रहती हैं।

I worship the Goddess who dwells in the kadamba forest, adorned with golden garments that grace her lofty form, and who is beautifully embellished with all sixty-four sacred arts. She is praised by Shiva himself, the blue-throated lord, and is considered the power that animates even Kali. She graciously bestows all cherished gifts upon the community of poets and seers, and she resides eternally within the enlightened inner mind.

munīndra-manu-rañjinīṃ bhava-mukhī-ndu-bhūṣā-vahāṃ vipañci-vini-vāsinīṃ vividha-mantra-rūpiṇīm | mahendra-kṛta-sevanāṃ madhura-bhāṣiṇīṃ māninīṃ mahāpura-parīśvarīṃ mati-madāntara-sthāṃ bhaje ||3||

मैं उस देवी की वंदना करता हूँ जो महर्षियों को प्रसन्न करती हैं और शिव के मुखचन्द्र को अपने आभूषण के रूप में धारण करती हैं। वे वीणा के तारों में निवास करती हैं और विविध मन्त्रों की साक्षात् स्वरूप हैं। देवराज इन्द्र भी उनकी सेवा करते हैं, वे मधुरभाषिणी और परम सम्माननीया हैं, तथा ध्यानस्थ बुद्धिजनों के हृदय में वास करती हैं।

I worship the Goddess who delights the great sages and seers, who bears the moon-like beauty of Shiva's own countenance as her ornament. She dwells within the vibrating strings of the veena and is herself the embodiment of countless sacred mantras. She is served devotedly by Indra, the king of the heavens, speaks always in the sweetest of tones, and commands the highest respect and dignity, ever dwelling within the contemplative mind.

purandara-purandharīṃ dhana-da-vanditāṃ vanditāṃ dharitri-dhara-dhāriṇīṃ dharaṇi-dhenu-rūpiṇīm | pracaṇḍa-capalāṃ prabhāṃ sphurita-candra-cūḍāmaṇiṃ mahāpura-parīśvarīṃ mati-madāntara-sthāṃ bhaje ||4||

मैं उस देवी की वंदना करता हूँ जिन्हें इन्द्र और कुबेर जैसे देवता भी पूजते हैं। वे पर्वतों का भार धारण करती हैं और कामधेनु के रूप में समस्त पृथ्वी को पोषण प्रदान करती हैं। उनकी प्रभा प्रचण्ड विद्युत के समान है, मस्तक पर चन्द्रमा सुशोभित है और वे श्रीपुर की महान ईश्वरी के रूप में जाग्रत बुद्धि में विराजती हैं।

I worship the Goddess who is worshipped by Indra, the lord of heavens, and revered by Kubera, the lord of wealth — yet she transcends them all. She bears the weight of mountains and manifests as the earth itself in the form of the divine wish-fulfilling cow. Her brilliance is fierce and swift as lightning, and the crescent moon gleams magnificently upon her crown, as she reigns over the great Sri Chakra and abides within the awakened mind.

smara-prathama-puṣpiṇīṃ rudhira-bindu-nīlāmbarāṃ gṛhīta-madhu-pātrikāṃ mada-vighūrṇana-netrāñcalām | ghṛṇā-nidhim aghoriṇīṃ vimala-veda-vidyākarīṃ mahāpura-parīśvarīṃ mati-madāntara-sthāṃ bhaje ||5||

मैं उस देवी की वंदना करता हूँ जो दिव्य प्रेम के प्रथम स्पन्दन पर प्रस्फुटित होती हैं और रक्त-बिन्दु युक्त नीलाम्बर धारण करती हैं। उनके हाथ में मधुपात्र है और उनके नयनों के कोण दिव्य मादकता से मंथर हैं। वे करुणा की अपार निधि हैं, अघोरिणी अर्थात् परम शांत स्वरूप हैं, और शुद्ध वैदिक विद्या प्रदान करने वाली हैं।

I worship the Goddess who blossoms radiantly at the very first stirring of divine love, who is robed in garments dark as night with drops of crimson beauty. She holds a jeweled cup filled with intoxicating honey-wine, and the corners of her eyes swirl with the gentle intoxication of divine bliss. She is the very treasury of compassion, the most serene and benevolent of forms, and the gracious bestower of pure Vedic wisdom.

sa-kuṅkuma-vilepanām-alika-cumbi-kastūrikāṃ samanda-hasitekṣaṇāṃ sa-śara-cāpa-niṣpīḍitām | aśeṣa-jana-mohinīm aruṇa-mālya-bhūṣāmbarāṃ mahāpura-parīśvarīṃ mati-madāntara-sthāṃ bhaje ||6||

मैं उस देवी की वंदना करता हूँ जो सुगन्धित कुंकुम और कस्तूरी से सुशोभित हैं और जिनकी मन्द-स्मित दृष्टि देखने वाले को मोहित कर लेती है। वे शर और धनुष धारण किए सुशोभित हैं जो दिव्य प्रेम की लहर उत्पन्न करते हैं। रक्तवर्णी माला और वस्त्रों से आभूषित वे समस्त जनों को मोहित करने वाली हैं और ज्ञानियों की जाग्रत चेतना में सदा विद्यमान रहती हैं।

I worship the Goddess who is anointed with fragrant saffron paste, whose forehead is kissed by the rich perfume of musk, and whose gentle, half-smiling glance captivates all who behold her. She gracefully wields her bow strung with the sugarcane of desire and arrows tipped with flowers, ready to pierce the heart with divine love. Adorned in rosy red garlands and crimson garments, she enchants every living being without exception, dwelling always within the awakened consciousness.

varaṃ hṛdaya-nāyakaḥ kṛpaṇa-varjito durlabho jagan-madana-mohinī-nayana-khañjanair-añjitaḥ | harir-na harati prabhur-na harati kṣitīśo'pi no mahāpura-parīśvarī mati-madāntara-sthā vibho ||7||

सबसे उत्तम वरदान हृदय के स्वामी का साक्षात्कार है — जो दुर्लभ है, कभी कंजूसी नहीं करता, और जगन्मोहिनी देवी की दृष्टि से अलंकृत है। यह दिव्य सम्पत्ति एक बार माँ द्वारा प्रदान होने के बाद न विष्णु छीन सकते हैं, न कोई पृथ्वी का राजा। हे सर्वव्यापिनी महाशक्ति, आपकी कृपा को कोई नहीं हर सकता।

The true gift is the Lord of the Heart himself — rare, never miserly, adorned and graced by the darting glances of the Goddess who enchants the entire world with love. This divine treasure, once bestowed by the Supreme Goddess, cannot be taken away by Vishnu, nor by any earthly lord or king. O all-pervading Mother, sovereign of the great Sri Chakra, you who dwell within the illumined mind — truly, no power in creation can deprive us of the grace you bestow.

śriyā kamalayā lasat-kara-sarojayā śrī-dharaḥ sadā bhajati mānase madhura-mañjulālāpinīm | yadi stutim-imāṃ paṭhet stuti-paras tripura-sundarīṃ sa nandati śive sadā mati-mad-antare cetasi ||8||

स्वयं विष्णु भी, कमलासना लक्ष्मी के साथ जिनके हाथ कमल के समान शोभित हैं, अपने हृदय में मधुर-भाषिणी त्रिपुरसुन्दरी का निरन्तर भजन करते हैं। जो भक्त श्रद्धापूर्वक इस अष्टक का पाठ करता है, वह सदा शिव-मङ्गल में आनन्दित रहता है और उसकी चेतना परम प्रकाश से आलोकित होती है।

Even Vishnu, the sustainer of creation, together with the radiant lotus-goddess Lakshmi whose hands bloom like golden lotuses, perpetually worships in his heart this sweet-spoken, most beautiful Goddess of the three worlds. If any devoted seeker recites this hymn of praise to Tripura Sundari with sincere dedication, he shall forever rejoice in unalloyed auspiciousness, and his mind and heart shall be illumined with the supreme light of her presence.
