अज
Aja
The unborn and eternal consciousness that is the substrate of all transient existence.
ॐ अजाय नमः
Oṃ Ajāya Namaḥ
Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
'A' (not) + 'Ja' (born). Aja means the one who was never born and therefore can never die.
Meaning
The Unborn. Everything we see has a birth date — trees, planets, people. But Shiva is 'Aja.' He represents the unborn reality that underlies all births. If the universe is a wave, Aja is the ocean. Waves are born and die, but the ocean remains. To call Shiva 'Aja' is to recognize that life is not a journey from birth to death, but a temporary appearance of the Unborn in the field of time. He is the witness who was there before your first breath and will be there after your last.
Story · From tradition
In the Svetasvatara Upanishad, the Supreme Being is described as 'Aja' — the one unborn who resides in the hearts of all. The Puranas mention that while other gods take 'avatars' (descents) through the womb, Shiva's manifestations are 'Ayoni-ja' (not born of a womb). He simply appears. This signifies that he is not a product of biological evolution but the consciousness that observes it. He is the eternal 'is-ness' that needs no beginning. Source: Svetasvatara Upanishad and Shiva Purana.
Modern Context · आज के संदर्भ में
We are obsessed with birthdays, milestones, and 'aging out.' Aja is the ultimate freedom from the 'biological clock.' For an NRI professional hitting a mid-life crisis, feeling that 'life is passing by,' Aja is a profound comfort. He says: the 'You' that matters was never born. You are not 'getting older' in consciousness. You are the same unborn observer you were at age five. He is the patron of the ageless spirit, helping you find a purpose that isn't tied to your age or physical capacity.
Meditation · ध्यान
Sit in a dark room. Visualize yourself as a point of light. Now, mentally peel away your birthday, your age, and your body. Ask: 'Before this body was born, what was I?' Don't look for an answer in words. Just sit with the feeling of 'I have always been here.' Feel the ancientness of your own soul. That is Aja.
Mantra Practice · मंत्र जप
Chant 'Oṃ Ajāya Namaḥ' 108 times. Let each chant be a declaration of your timeless nature. Focus on the silence that exists before you start the chant. That silence is Aja.
Journal Prompt · चिंतन
“If you stopped identifying with your age, how would your goals and fears change? What would you do today if you felt 'ageless'?”
No date of birth, no day of end / On his timelessness, we all depend.
