Sadāśiva
The primordial, formless state of Shiva representing absolute, timeless consciousness.

Oṃ Sadāśivāya Namaḥ
Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
'Sadā' means always or eternally and 'Śiva' means the auspicious one. It denotes the state where auspiciousness is not a passing quality but the very essence of being.
Meaning
The Eternally Auspicious. This is Shiva before he takes any form. Before the anger of Rudra or the dance of Nataraja, there is Sadashiva: pure, formless awareness. He is the electric stillness of a moment that has no edges. He is the pause between two thoughts, stretched to infinity. To connect with Sadashiva is to touch the part of yourself that was never born and will never die. He is the background screen upon which the movie of the universe is projected.
Story · From tradition
The Linga Purana describes the Lingodbhava: a cosmic dispute between Brahma and Vishnu about supremacy. Suddenly, a blazing pillar of light appeared, stretching infinitely. Brahma flew up as a swan for eons but could not find the top. Vishnu dove down as a boar for eons but could not find the base. This infinite column of fire was Sadashiva, revealing that the Absolute cannot be measured or contained by even the highest creator or preserver. He is the beginningless and endless pillar of consciousness. Source: Linga Purana and Shiva Purana (Vidyeshwara Samhita).
Modern Context · आज के संदर्भ में
Your daughter, age six, asks at bedtime: 'Daddy, were you alive before you were born?' You freeze, not because the question is hard, but because for one second, you touch something edgeless. That edgeless feeling is Sadashiva. In our NRI lives, we often ask 'Where is home?' between two countries. Sadashiva says home is not a geography, but the timeless awareness within you. He is the antidote to the anxiety of mortality and the constant 'becoming' of the modern world. You don't need to become anything; you already are Sadashiva.
Meditation · ध्यान
Sit in complete stillness. Ask internally: 'Who is aware right now?' Not what you are thinking, but who is the one aware of the thoughts. Reject every conceptual answer. In the space where no answer remains but only raw, wordless awareness — stay there for 2 minutes. That is the vibration of Sadashiva.
Mantra Practice · मंत्र जप
Chant 108 times at midnight, ideally during Maha Shivaratri. Sit in darkness facing South. Let the sound of 'Sivāya' dissolve into the silence of your room. Do not rush the syllables; let them breathe.
Journal Prompt · चिंतन
“Strip away your name, your job, your memories, and your body. What remains? Describe the quality of that 'remnant' if you can.”
Before the first star, after the last sun / The many are gone, the One has begun.
