नित्य
Nitya
The constant and eternally present consciousness in every moment of time.
ॐ नित्याय नमः
Oṃ Nityāya Namaḥ
Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
'Nitya' means eternal, constant, or that which is always present in every moment without fail.
Meaning
The Eternal. Nitya is the quality of 'always-ness.' While 'Eternal' often sounds like a long time, Nitya is about the 'now.' He is the one who is present in every micro-second of your life. He is the thread that holds the beads of different experiences together. To call Shiva 'Nitya' is to recognize that spirituality is not a weekend activity or a ritual; it is a constant, 24/7 reality. He is the guardian of the present moment, the only place where eternity can be touched.
Story · From tradition
In the Agamas and the Shiva Sutras, Nitya is the name given to the foundational consciousness that never sleeps. Even when you are in deep sleep and have no thoughts, something is present to know that you slept well. That 'something' is Nitya Shiva. The story of Shiva as the 'Nitya-Vibhuti' (Eternal Splendor) describes how his grace is not a reward for good deeds but a constant, unceasing flow like the sunlight. He is the eternal 'Am' in 'I Am.' Source: Shiva Sutras and Vijnana Bhairava Tantra.
Modern Context · आज के संदर्भ में
We live in a 'gig economy' where everything is temporary — temporary jobs, temporary leases, temporary relationships. Nitya is the only 'Permanent Resident' in your life. For the NRI professional constantly renewing visas or moving cities, Nitya is the stability. He is the 'Constant' in the equation of your life. He reminds you that while your external circumstances are 'Anitya' (temporary), your core is 'Nitya.' He is the patron of consistency and long-term commitment in a world of short attention spans.
Meditation · ध्यान
Sit quietly. Notice the sounds around you. Notice the sensations in your body. Notice your thoughts. Now, notice the 'space' in which all these things are happening. Realize that sounds come and go, but the space remains. Thoughts come and go, but you remain. Focus on that 'remaining' quality for 5 minutes. Say: 'I am Nitya.'
